The Truth About The Ruger PC Carbine: 1000 Round Review

Ойын-сауық

The Ruger PC Carbine is a great budget 9mm rifle with some awesome features for a low price, but how well does it do in adverse conditions and does it compare to some of it's competition?

For my first (so far only) firearm, I'm really happy with this, bought a couple months ago. I was very anti-gun for a long time, then things got interesting, and I decided to get something for my suburban DC-area home and family and chose this. With very little experience beforehand, this was easy to pick up and a TON of fun to shoot. Now if I could only find affordable 9mm ammunition...

Bought one specifically for my wife to use for home defense. She had zero experience with any firearms and a lot of fear, she couldn’t muscle my shotgun and my AR or handguns were intimidating her. It seemed like the best all around affordable option with intuitive controls and ergonomics. I put a Tlr8 light underneath the barrel and a Romeo 5 on top. It is really easy shooting right out of the box and I feel confident it can do the job around my house, I would recommend it for anyone getting their first defensive gun.

While you mentioned you're not a open/iron sights guy, Ruger's stock ring/post setup is absolutely excellent, particularly when combined with the stock's drop-at-comb. That the sight radius isn't the entire length of the receiver and barrel isn't an issue, and might be a benefit, because they provide more peripheral view of the target than a receiver-mounted rear sight. They're easy to acquire and intuitive to use, making quick work of fast hits on a 6" plate at 100+ yards from the standing position.

I got the Ruger PC Carbine based entirely on this video, Much to my surprise the one they had at my favorite shop had the collapsable stock and the keymod hand guard. It didn't come with any sights but didn't really care that much because they gave me $100 bucks off on a great Holosun. They sell me a lot of guns so they asked me not to tell anyone but for the price this gun is fantastic. My friends and I do a mix snowmobile/shooting event every year for a few days up in the west central Idaho mountains. You get total 500 rounds, can mix and match with one rifle, one pistol no sight and one pistol with sight. All mags have to be prepacked. I won easy this year against my friends who fight the entire trip between AR and AK guys with the following firearm mix: Ruger PC Carbine, Glock 17 total stock , and HK VP9 Match, upgraded trigger with Holosun sight. The ability to carry less magazines because the Ruger uses the same magazines as Glock was a huge advantage. 30 Round Glock mags worked great. Anti-2A people have no idea how much fun firearms are. Their loss. Love this channel.

What can I say these clones are great. kzread.infoUgkxyRRlSON42Gvsq2Sv56DpPlr0XZQpL-JB This is the same as the Air hawk but with a few minor changes. The trigger adjustment screw is shorter then the air hawk so you dont get that super light trigger. It's a easy hardware store fix. The synthetic stock to me is 100x better then the air hawk wood stock. This black hawk air rifle is strong and shoots great. The only thing you have to remember with these air rifles is that they are way over greased and oiled from the factory. There are only three ways to cure this but I'm only going to tell you 2 of them. 1. Shoot it and deal with the noise. 2. Disassemble and wipe all the lube off resemble an shoot. Great rifle and all the diana 34 parts will fit these. Edit: Vortek sells seals for these that are way better then the factory installed seals. I installed the vortex seal and a new breach seal with a shim kit and Now I got a efficient and powerful air rifle with a smooth solid shot cycle. This thing shoots smoother then my gamo maxxim swarm.

Great review of this platform. You're right, these guns are fun to shoot. I was looking for a PCC for awhile, and like a lot of people was looking at AR based weapons. A friend has the Ruger and recommended it to me. With everything going on over the past year, it was a little hard to find one, but I eventually got a Ruger with the M-lok front end. The first time I took it to the range, I was pretty impressed. I only had to make a minor sight adjustment and I was on target right where I wanted to be. The gun is a lot of fun to shoot, and has actually moved into the truck gun slot for me. Since I usually have one of my Glocks with me, getting one of these Rugers made sense since I could use the same Glock mags in the Ruger and it meant that from a logistics standpoint, I only had to carry 1 type of ammo and 1 type of mag.

MLOK is nice but heavier than the standard handguard. I'm always noticing how little muzzle movement there is with JP and Ruger PCCs. The JP is flatter shooting than the Ruger's still very flat too. Wishing Ruger would make a light or competition version. Non-takedown. Shorter/lighter MLOK handguard. 14-15 inch barrel with pinned comp to make it 16 inches. Different sized tungsten dead blow weights for different kinds of 9mm ammo.

I have the 'Canadian' version with the longer barrel. First time at the range it worked perfectly. After reading/watching a number of reviews, I decided to do all the upgrades. I went with the M*Carbo parts. There was a noticable improvement, but for me the main reason of upgrading to the M*Carbo parts is durability and precision machining of many of the part. Overall, I love this carbine, lots of fun at the range.

Good review man. If you're not planning on using the iron sights, there are a couple companies who make red dot mounts that mount where the rear sight is. Having the dot on the barrel will make sure it holds zero when you take it down. 👍

Solid review! Just picked one up about 2 weeks ago after searching for months as they are hard to find in NY legal configuration these days. I.e non threaded barrel and without the pistol grip. Haven't shot it yet, but can't wait. I too swapped out the Ruger magazine adapter for the Glock and it is super easy. Even for someone who is still a novice with working on firearms. Looking forward to taking to the range next....that's as soon as i can get some more ammo.

That jam is particularly noted by people who have taken say the Ruger 44 carbine and tried to convert it into a straight feed mag instead of the side extract mag so it will be interesting to see if more of those jams play out as people get them dirty, use different pressure rounds, experience different environments or even just hold their gun canted.

Thanks for the 1,000 round review. I really like that you did the night shooting in the bitter cold, too. Low temps like that tend to change how certain firearms perform. I don't recall too many gun reviews on KZread with night shooting. I got one of these for my wife just as the coof hit last year, and I still had to drive out of state to pick it up, as there were none that I could find available in my state. (For those who are unaware, you can purchase long guns in adjoining states as long as they are legal in your state.) Anyway, my question is what flashlight mount are you using, and flashlight?

It has soooooo many screws that liked to walk out on me at the range I ended up leaving it in the safe for a year till I got the magpul aftermarket stock. It adds a bunch of compartments including one in the grip where I can store some Alan keys for the screws.

Very good video. My go to hone defense carbine was and for most times is an M1Carbine with 110 so. When I got it , you used to be able to get Winchester ball, 50 rounds for$10. Those days are gone. I reload for it so it it is still viable but not for most. I picked up the Ruger. In fact I had written to Ruger and requested this rifle be made a couple of years before it came out. My logic was that the time was ripe for a 9mm sporter/ home defense carbine like their old carbines. I live in a restricted state, but the rationale for its’ design as you stated is multiple. First, legality. Next optics. Ask the McClosky family if they would have fared better standing outside their home with the Ruger instead of an AR. You can travel with the Ruger taken down, with 10 round mags almost anywhere. To be safe get the non threaded compliant version. My only double stack 9mm was a Browning High power , so I picked up a gen 5 Glock 19.nice home defense combo. The indoor noise is no worse than the M1 , and much less than an AR. Having a few Ruger 10/22s this carbine was a natural. I em would like to see a night sight option. For optic may go for a Vortex which see through mount allowing use of open sights. Only feeding issue I had was with one Magpul Glock 19 mag with 115 CCI ball ammo.

I've had (still have) a Marlin Camp carbine in 9mm. Put around 500 rounds through it then stored it for about 10 years. When I took it out to a range it only fired twice and jammed. When I tore it down at home I found the 'plastic?' recoil buffer had disintegrated - looked like air soft pellets. Ordered two replacements and it's back to normal. It also uses the same magazines for my S&W 5906 (the gun shop called it the Starsky and Hutch gun).

Great video. I could not help but notice the person shooting this model left handed, as this was one of my questions regarding this rifle. I learned a great lesson many years ago at Boy Scot Camp, which taught me to shoot a rifle left handed. I am a natural right handed shooter, but my right eye was compromised ( surgically repaired since then) so I would try and shoot right handed, but I would look through the sights with my left eye, leaning over and across the stock, giving me a compromised line of sight, instead of using my right eye which would had been correct for right handed shooting. So I learned left handed to use my better sight left eye. Only reason I mentioned this is that it seemed the left handed shooter may had also looking across the stock as I had many years ago before being corrected by that shooting instructor. Maybe I was mistaken, but it brought back an old lesson. Again very informative video.

Good review. I have this rifle in the American Flag version and love it. When I bought it about six months ago you couldn't get one at normal pricing so when a big box store had it available for a really great price I ran out to get it. The store clerk said they had one rifle left and it was black. When we opened the box we found out it as the American flag variant and I was pleasantly surprised. Due to the ammo crunch I haven't been able to put many rounds through it so your review was perfectly timed. Although the rifle is a bit heavy it does feel extremely durable and capable of taking a pounding. It would have been great if you had actually shown the rifle broken down. Once broken down many people use this as a backpack gun. It's not as small and light as a Sub2000 but it is a much better made take down rifle. You were spot on about it being a great ranch rifle for 100 yards or so and of course you can always use your magazine from your pistol if you're looking at a shot that's a bit long for your pistol. That one (feeding?) issue did look like an oddity and with over 1,000 rounds through it, it seems like this is a very reliable firearm. BTW, I hope you guys don't get divorced, you have a great camerawoman and the banter between you both is great, lol. God bless. 👍🏼

Never been fond of semi-auto anything, bought the PCC and a handful of 33rd mags, and a Security 9 with extra mags for the girls to use on the farm. They are not fond of my heavy vintage guns. N-frame, Ruger SBH Dragoon, octagon barrel .30 and .45 lever guns… The carbine is not ammo sensitive, makes the 147gr steel case spam can fillings disappear just fine.

I found M&P mags can be easily retrofitted to work with the stock SR-9 magwell. (However SR-9 mags will NOT fit in an M&P). The Ruger mags lock in via a slot on the front of the mag. Putting a slot at the same spot on an M&P mag will allow it to lock in and function. Just remember to remove the spring

I did add a used midwest handguard to make it easier to add a light and a sling. I could move the dot up front too, but I almost never take mine down, so not worried about losing zero (and, honestly I don't think it would). My only malfunctions came with cheap Winchester "forged" steelcase ammo (wouldn't even buy that in today's shortages). I liked this so much I replaced my XD with a Glock just because it made sense to have a pile of interchangable magazines.

It worked ok on Ruger mags with the Ruger adapter, but couldn’t finish a mag without a jam with the Glock mag and adapter installed. Used nothing but factory Glock mags (several different ones) and different types of ammo. After the 2nd trip it would still stovepipe or fail to feed about 3-5 times per mag. Traded it back in to the shop I bought it from at a HUGE loss. I’d still love to have one again, that WORKED. 😕
