Katana can cut through things other swords can't. My katana cut through extra mature cheddar, I got some really nice cheese and chipotle sandwiches from it. My bastard sword just bludgeoned the cheese and I had to have a cheese omelette instead. The cheese and chipotle sandwich test proves the superiority of the katana.

***** Did I say arqebuse? Did I specify anything? For militaries to use new technology in the 16th and 17th centuries, they would have to hear about the technology, find a blacksmith with the skill to create thousands, have thousands of the item made, and then teach their soldiers how to use it. You're right, that takes years, and towards the end of the 16th century would be about the right amount of time to get all that ready so that they are popular in the 17th. The fact that you're getting so aggressive about something that literally doesn't matter AND you're wrong about it astounds me.

As a general counterpoint to some of the more extreme bashers, you have to take something in consideration. If the weapon really seriously sucked, would it have still been used for so long? You can only wage war for so long with a shitty weapon. (And yes i know, as in most historical warfare, swords generally weren't the main weapon used.) Personally i just like the sword because it's pretty both in real life and in media (Drawings/3D Renders), and it generally feels nice to hold and use. But i'm not a weapon-ist. Even is something's my "favorite" in a category doesn't mean everything else is trash! Another example, i think revolvers are the nicest-looking handguns, yet i can really appreciate others.

The usual basher's response to that is "well the Japanese were ridiculously hidebound and inflexible thinkers who never encountered other methods of warfare that would have necessitated any evolution in their sword design". Which we know not to be the actual case from historical records--there are plenty of accounts from the first Mongol invasion of Japan where the tachi of the day were getting damaged excessively or even broken in hard use against Sino-Mongol opponents' hardened leather armor. Methods of crafting blades were adjusted, new techniques to produce more robust blades were adopted, and it apparently paid off in the second invasion. (The big defensive wall at Hakata Bay helped quite a bit *more*, mind, but yeah. XD)

Japan was very isolated for a majority of it’s history, even practicing self isolation and putting foreigners who landed on their shores to death. They never had their weaponry challenged which is why the katana never really changed. Medieval European weaponry changed so much because Europeans were constantly at war with one another and even foreign nations with completely alien weaponry. They had to change their weapon designs to constantly outmatch each other or get around each others’ armor. Katanas weren’t used for so long because they’re “just that good”. The Japanese just had no reason to change the way they made swords.

  • @TheFifthCrow

I have to agree, katanas feel nice and also look amazing. Also, the main point I have that katanas are good is that there are still martial arts practiced today with katanas. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t know of any medieval sword martial art outside of Larp. Although katanas didn’t see very many other swords, the mogul’s swords did when they conquered China. When the samurai fought them, the samurai did get beaten in multiple places. But samurai still won quite a lot, and their swords held up to a long fight pretty well. I do enjoy seeing shad’s content, but his constant bashing of katanas hurts a little. The samurai made a weapon that suited their fighting style, and they were some of the fiercest warriors of their time.

@@HiddelS143 Except by the time the Japanese started the "Sakoku" (Isolation) much of the world had moved past the point of medieval warfare. And even long before the phasing out of the medieval (or Sengoku Period) weaponry, the Japanese had already adopted the use of rifles in the tactics and warfare... while still utilizing the katana. And once the Meiji Restoration had finished, Japan had modernized it's military and tactics that its katanas were seen more as a status symbol than anything else, but it was still a weapon. Or more funnily: Western romanticized samurai: "I will not disgrace myself with a firearm. I shall instead face my opponent with honor and my tachi." Real Samurai: "Shit, ran out of ammo and lost my bow, my yari and my naginata. Well old buddy old pal, looks like you're all that's left." *Dies in a last stand wielding his last weapon*

+Reichtangle It actually was meant for unarmored combat. It's far from decent, as it was brittle, and broke quite easily. It's an inferior sword, but impressive, considering it was made from ''pig iron''. It lack versitility, meaning a longsword has more uses. Since a long sword can slash, pierce and half-sworded (Either using it as a longer dagger, or a hammer). You can't halfsword a katana.

It is not inherently a great sword. 1 It is primarily a slashing/cutting weapon so armor can be troublesome. 2 The curviture of it's blade makes it hard to properly stab an opponent. 3 Using your pinkys as the source of power for swings is tricky to get the hang of. However Samurais used MANY MANY different kinds of weapons other than a katana. A good indication that it is not an end all weapon is the fact that Japan has a large diversity of weaponry. Signifying that certain weapons have certain uses.

By the 16th century, Japanese armors were quite sophisticated. While it may be easy to see some gaps, people often wore various accessory pieces and Kikko brigandine under the main pieces of the armor. So no huge gaps there; people liked to survive, and they used armor because it worked. In regards to thrusting with a semi-curved blade, it is done a little differently from a straight sword, but it's still very effective.

personally I prefer Ninja style short swords (the more straight ones with no gaurd on them they werent meant to be clashing blades and werent meant to have a reply for their assaults so Concealing them was better M.O.) japanese weapons were pretty diverse making them great for art, Media especially videogames where you could put loads of unique weapon styles in your game without including any other culture making fuedal japan(or more accurately) the hundred something years the shogunate were fighting a great period to set games books and Movies. at the same level as ancient rome or Medievil europe. theres alot of warrior cultures in asia- the mongols especially but in order to stand out in history you have to have something pretty unique and immediatly interesting and Japan with its art and Warriors unique set of weaponry armor and aesthetic was a perrfect fit for the romantic reading the west has been fan of since the 1800s.

On the MG vs sword topic, I wonder if anyone has tried it with the barrel red hot. I've seen videos of what happens when MGs are fired continuously without allowing them to cool off, the barrels can actually get so hot they droop, warp, and eventually burst apart. Under normal operating conditions this would never be allowed to happen. However, during heavy, desperate fighting, such as fighting off japanese human wave attacks armed with swords and bayonets, it's not inconceivable for some marine to stay on the trigger so long that his 1919 gets glowing red. I highly doubt it would cut clean through, but I could see a sword leaving a pretty good notch, based on what the mythbuster's sword did to a cold barrel. Either way, it would likely destroy the barrel, even if the user somehow survived the encounter, that MG is toast. Add in a bit of good old fashioned battlefield exaggeration, and the story changing as it passes around, and you have a "It cut through a MG barrel" myth started

For anyone wondering what the whole series is like, I would definitely suggest you watch it. It is a lot longer than I expected it to be, but it doesn't just cover the katana. The series goes over things like the physical properties of swords and looks at each feature of the katana in a fair way and says what is good and what is bad about it. I know a lot more than I did before, and while I still believe (and rightly so with the information I learned) that the katana is not the best sword, it's definitely got some features that could be desirable. I recommend this 5 part series, but set yourself out some time as the last video is nearly 50 minutes long.

same with me. the first time i learned about the katana i thought that it was the best think ever. so i when out and bought one and sharpen it up and started cutting thou wood and bottles and it was good. i believe everything that people said about it... till i gave it to my dad and he hit the bottle side ways and bent it the sword. so over the next 3 days i learned that folded steel and a thick spine that the katana has not alot of flex. after that i got a cold steel grosse messer and man it was amazing and it can flex and can take a beating. that was when i started to think that the katana was crap and just a down right horrible sword. but i got cocky again. and i try to cut thou glass with my messer and... it had two mean dents and a rip in the blade. i try my best to fix it with a file. maybe a mouth in i learned that a katana is equal to a messer. maybe not a gross messer but a Swiss messer. and i do like both of them but over time i learn to love longswords and in my own opinion. its better in more moves sets and the longer blade and also being two bladed. it just more.... "functional" really thou a one sided sword like a katana is good in its own ways. its easier with edge alinment and it had amazing cutting power. over all both swords are good in there own way and a katana and longsword and messer are just swords. "aka sharpen metal bar"

One misunderstanding about the origin of information about the katana, has to do with the way Japanese heroic fantasy is written versus the way Western heroic fantasy is written. In the Western tradition, a Sword might be magical, and thus cut through things other swords won't. We often ascribe these supernatural qualities to items as part of our fantasy stories. But in the Eastern tradition, you are less likely to find a magic sword as a plot device, as a magical fighting technique. Eastern fantasy prefers for magical power to be an ability learned rather than an object obtained. Thus it is the technique, not the sword itself, that enables cutting through impossible materials. Thus, when Western audiences watch Japanese stories, they often misunderstand the nature of what they are being shown, and why certain things are attributed with the capabilities they have.

i think alot of people that love katanas know its not the perfect sword ever, thats a stupid miss conception held by people who dont even own a sword or know anything about them. i collect katanas and i love them, and i dont think its the perfect sword ever, but its god awful annoying that everyone thinks your a stupid fan boy when you stick up for the blade at all, when people from the uk who say stupid things like "katana does not stand a chance vs a long sword" or some bullshit about metal armor making them useless. i dont understand how as katana is so much less effective vs armor, when both a samurai and a knight of any culture, would switch to a blunt weapon for armor. i think the katana is an amazing beautiful sword. it has a length that i like, and its highly manuverable while also keeping a two handed option for holding. its a well rounded weapon that can thrust cut and chop very well. it can also keep a very very sharp edge, because its edge is made hard. the only way it can keep that hard edge without breaking is a soft back, its very intelligently designed. also the katana blade itself had great artistic value because of the unique hamon designs and grains in the blade. the katana blade is not perfect, they break, ive broken one, they tend to chip on the edge because its so hard. the katana also absorbs shock extremely well and i dont think anyone really talks about that. you dont hurt your hands on a clash. people think you cant even block with a katana, i have an antique and you can see where the blade was cut into on the sides and back, the owner used it to block and counter with a slash. its very common technique to block above the head or along your back, and come around under the sword after blocking.

+derp man Actually European knights would often use their swords against armored opponents if they did not have a pick or blunt weapon. There are openings in the armor that can be stabbed into, and for killing a bludgeoned opponent they often used their swords for a coup de grace. The samurai mainly used the Katana for cutting down unarmored opponents. Against another samurai they would likely draw their wakizashi as most samurai did not carry a blunt weapon. The wakizashi was their honor sword and was much shorter than the katana allowing more agile use to fight around armor and allowed the use of martial arts to help disable opponents for a coup de grace. About your mention of breaking swords and the hardness of a katana. Extreme hardness such as that is rarely seen in long swords due to making them more prone to breaking, thus why the katana is often seen as a lesser sword than European swords. Except it comes with an impressive advantage, in a sword fight you often parry with the edge, a softer more flexible metal as seen in European swords will receive damage and chips far more easily than a katana would. Every time a blade receives damage along the blade it becomes less suitable for slicing. Which was the intended purpose of a katana, which is also why it is curved. This is also why steel scimitars and khapeshes tend to be much harder steel than straight swords. The argument as to whether a katana is superior to a European sword is a moot point. They are different swords, designed for different use, in different cultures, carried by different fighters, who were trained to use their sword to it's full potential.

  • @nonanon666

@@abonynge the harder steel of a katana's edge makes it more prone to chipping, not less. Softer steels dent and deform, harder steels, chip, crack, and shatter. The advantage of a harder steel edge is that it will *retain* a sharp edge for longer, without rolling over, deforming, and dulling. Source: twenty years using knives every day as a butcher.

@@nonanon666 While this is true for kitchen use, the harder steel will damage the edge of softer steel further because we are talking about edge to edge impacts and not cutting flesh. For the slaughter of a rebelling lower class as the samurai and knights were primarily used for, the Katana is better for cutting through 1 person while the European Longsword is better for cutting through several for the reasons you mention. Again different benefits, different masteries.

For some reasons I happen to encounter more katana basher than katana basher. Is it a bad thing that everywhere I end up people are HEAVILY disliking what I like? I think not. It lets me keep a clear view about stuff. I prevents me from falling to the magic of mystification but it also makes me appreciate the good things about the katana. I still just wonder why "katana fanboys" are actually STILL A THING while I sololy encounter "katana basher". This is even literally the first source I have ever seen that gives this group of individuals a name. Never befor have I come to the enjoyment of givinng this unfought evil a name. I mean, while katana fanboys get their myths debunked pretty quickly it appears that there are almost no unclear misconceptions about the katana anymore on the internet because below every video/article that includes information about the katana or the samurai people go apeshit about it, trying to tear everything good about it apart. This is VERY sad. Because, in my opinion, the "cure" has become an even greater evil. Katana basher actually don't stop after debunking myths, they actually start a whole new "reversed mystification" or even start to mystificate other swords, e.g. the longsword, over the katana. Not only that, the katana basher are actually making fun of anyone that is just loving the katana or the samurai culture in general with unjustified over-exaggerations and comparing them with fanboys.

I find this series worthwhile and think that more "Truth About the [insert sword name here]" should be made. Now because of the comparison we see is Samurai, the most well-known users of the Katana because of popular media, and Knights. Now a whole other series could be could be spent debunking the misconception of either, some people on youtube have done just that, but for the time being, I'm focusing on the swords they carried. Popular media says that Knights most commonly carried the Longsword, which is already massively wrong due to the fact that historical records show the vast majority of knights preferred the broadsword. Now, I think videos regarding the truths about both would be beneficial, mostly because it helps in setting things straight. I would prefer, in that regard, that you start with the longsword, mostly on account that it most commonly seen as a weapon carried by iconic European warrior figures. The series could probably branch out to other weapon tyes, such as axes and bows and debunk their misconceptions too.

I enjoy your videos very much. I have a question about the katana. Why the long handle with a fairly short blade? My martial arts training has been mostly in Chinese systems. In Kung Fu we have the Miao Dao which is the two handed long saber that the Japanese katana supposedly evolved from. The Miao Dao is long so it requires a long handle for two hands. Much like the European long and great swords but the katana has a blade that's pretty much the same length as a western one handed saber. So why did the Japanese have that long handle? Why didn't they do something like the Chinese one handed Dao? Just curious. Thanks for your time. 👍😆 Trace from Ohio.

I personally guess that lack of good material is one of them. Another would be the evolution of the martial arts and maybe just a style choice. In my experience I did not find weapons that where meant to be 1 handed a problem with a two handed handle (god my english here). It also gives a bit more control, speed and power on the swings, especially if you don't use shields so I guess that was enough of a reason to them? Just throwing ideas here, don't really know.

In WWII the pacific theater saw frequent use of the M1919A4 .30 caliber belt fed machine gun. The soldiers firing this would fire thousands of rounds out of them in short periods of time. There had been barrels seen to have gotten so hot the metal actually deformed and the gun having catastrophic failures. Also if the gun got this hot it would cook off rounds meaning it would fire without you pulling the trigger. At these extreme of temperatures a katana could theoretically cut the metal. The Mythbusters tested on room temperature barrels. That is an inconclusive test as it does not reflect the legends. Now, the chances that a machine gun barrel was ever cut in combat is abysmally low due to the fact if you were that close to the enemy you kill him instead of targeting his firearm.

+Madra I came to make this point, MG barrels would get red/white hot and a Katana (probably most quality cutting sword) could most likely cut through maleable hot steel... it is definitely misleading to say "A katana can cut through a Machine Gun Barrel" without noting other conditions. It is noted that Japanese soldiers would disable MGs when able, cutting with a sword is probably a less likely and efficient means and requires the proper conditions but I bet it had happened more than a few times, if not to simply perpetuate fear in the hearts of their enemies. After all, War isnt necessarily about killing each other to extinction but rather beat, hurt and scare the other side enough to make them give up.

As a Kenjutsu practitioner, I find that a lot of stuff is said about the engineering of the Katana (some great other rubbish) but what I find interesting about the weapon are how the techniques developed to suppress the weapons flaws (and yes, the Katana has a lot of those), but on a technical level, the usage of it is awesome and unlike most I've seen. For example, the esgrima school of Florence makes huge emphasis on the game - the distance and spacing - which is great, but the actual cut by putting your weight on the movement, centered to your body, is completely neglected.

Under the right conditions steel can become so brittle that it breaks up like paper due to micro fractures.

This is an excellent series filled with good information. But there are a few other facts you might have mentioned that are relevant to your case. First you probably should have more historical context. The first Samurai were archers. The second wave of Samurai were mounted lancers, These weapons are of course weapons that are useful in massed combat. But the cult of the Katana stems from the third wave of Samurai during the long period of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Around 1600 Ieyoshi Tokugawa unified Japan after centuries of civil war. The major weapon that was responsible for this break in the long stalemate was the musket. The Japanese got firearms from the Portuguese. Tokugawa immediately set about ridding Japan of firearms and instituted a sword cult. There was some dueling at first like that of Musashi but over the next two centuries dueling too was suppressed. Disputes between Samurai were resolved by the dictates of the daimyo (clan leader). The loser was expected to simply kill himself. Consequently later Samurais carried around the traditional two swords but they seldom practiced. In Europe at this time (17th and 18th century) the swordsmen were probably more skilled because of all the dueling required of gentlemen. A Samurai probably only got to use his sword when he chopped down a peasant. The Asians warriors most formidable in war were not the Japanese but rather the Mongols. When the Mongols attacked Japan the accounts at the time tell of how the Samurai's swords bent and broke against the Mongol sabers. Fortunately for Japan, they got a break from the weather (Kamikazi). The reason why the Katana was so primitive was because the Tokugawa shogunate had tried to isolate Japan from the rest of the world and to freeze all technological progress. The Shoguns tore down bridges and took the people off horseback and put them back on foot. No guns, no horses, and old fashion swords. It was all part of their anti-technology policy. That's why when Perry sailed into Tokyo harbor with "The Black Ships" it was so amazing that Japanese suddenly reversed two hundred and fifty years of their history and embraced Western ideas and technology.

it's all about what the sword is made of a katana can cut through another katana if one is harder. something sharper and harder will cut through something softer. chain mail is designed to divert the cut into angles like the tank does with shells. i'm sure a titanium katana would cut through something a normal katana couldn't. the sharpness matters as well.

I noticed you used Rurouni Kenshin when mentioning the katana's super human properties. For that, I strongly recommend using that scene at Kanryu's mansion, where Kenshin gets pissed at Kanryu and slices through a gas lap and sends it crashing into the side of the mansion, with one swing, just to prove his point. There is not fucking way and thing can do that.

I teach Kenjutsu, and I am still not a "Fan-boy" A good sword, is a good sword, a bad one can bend break or shatter. Balance is also an issue, a poorly balanced Katana, facing a well balanced English long Sword, will be slow, and clumsy. (Even if the Kanana is lighter) All things equal with the blades, the skill of the wielders will be the factor on who would survive in real combat.
