The truth about The Hobbit

Ойын-сауық

Peter Jackson may have outdone himself on the Lord of the Rings, but what about his follow up trilogy? Certainly that would be of equal quality...right?

These movies are masterpieces compared to Amazon's take on Tolkien

Just came back to this video after the announcement of another lotr movie. Great appreciation video of Peter Jackson pulling off the impossible with little time.

Chain and Turtleneck Sweater 🔥 The question though is whether it was more inspired by Lonely Island or Dwayne Johnson?

As much as I know these films fall short of LotR, there are solid fan edits that solve many of the pacing and excess problems. Imagine a version of Battle Of The Five Armies that isn’t so action crazy to the point of goofy, and still manages to place the focus on Bilbo and Thorin, where it always should have.

True. Like the Star Wars prequels, the fan edits do solve some of the major pacing issues.

It is also about the original material: The Hobbit is a wonderful story for children, a single book. Turning that childrens book into a trilogy messes with the pacing and some core elements. Putting big fighting sequences in isn't true to the book, because a child would get bored hearing battle descriptions over and over again. So if you judge it as an adaptation, not just a film series, it changes your view of it as opposed to the LotR, which stayed relatively near the source story. For me personally, I also just enjoy the characters of Lord of the Rings more. Every character in a the fellowship has their own destinct profile and it helps that they split up and we get time with smaller groups of characters. Caring about 13 almost identical dwarves is a lot harder. Some shifts in character also felt weird. Thranduil for example is a lot more sympathetic and reasonable in the book (though I love Lee Pace, bless). And my god, the feeling of the LotR films coming out - it was so new and unique and you had this amazing cast dynamic of people who are friends/friendly with each other to this day because they spent close to two years with each other. The Hobbit really lacked that which might be the reason it didn't become the cultural phenomena that LotR became even outside the films

I don't love these movies by any stretch but I will watch them every year or so. I actually like An Unexpected Journey more and more since it released. But I have disliked the other two films more and more to the point that I audibly sigh everytime it comes around to sticking Battle of the Five Armies into my Blu-ray player... I often wonder what would've happened if Guillermo had stayed on board as director

I strongly suggest watching one of the fanedits instead. For example M4's The Hobbit Book Edit.

Compare Hobbit films to the book, and compared to the deliberate, balanced pace and time and magnitude of LOTR, Hobbit is a sack of shit. But in their own rite, as a “cinematic hobbit” I freaking LOVE the Hobbit films. I will constantly watch them every few months, before rewatching the LOTR series.
