At the end of the day, story telling is king. What do you think?
@PilotWanderlust

I fully agree about what you said at the end. Intros are killing the video and I really don‘t want to see those like and subscribe bla bla at the beginning, I want to start with the film right away. However I do not agree about storytelling in total. Videos telling a story tend to be better and more captivating and emotional, BUT a video/film CAN be great even without telling a story at all! Sometimes a film full of highlights can be amazing, if you combine locations, light, characters, etc. For example, GoPro‘s highlight videos are always amazing, and they don’t tell a story at all. If you are not good at storytelling, just skip it and do what you are good at. It might be a great video! I have seen a short film of a retired pilot made by his son with amateur and very old footage, but the edit and storytelling was amazing. That was a great example that storytelling can be king! Thanks for your videos!

Thanks for the insight! I just changed the way I'm going to start my video. 👍. I already had the story layout set, but realized I wasn't going to introduce it correctly. Your videos are packed with valuable advice and info and I'm learning so much from them.
Not long ago I learned that editing told a story...so my editing improved...but it improved mechanically...It became easier to watch the finish product but the story was just a silhouette at best. Learning to tell a story remains a challenge.

Yeah it is definitely one of the hardest parts of filmmaking. Editing plays a big part too so I am happy to hear you are doing well with that aspect. Just keep practicing!

Hey Sean. Great video. I would love to hear more about how you tell stories through videos. It would be cool to have you breakdown one of your videos and why you choose the method you did.
This was so interesting! Story telling is an att, and so is video making. I am new at this and still learning. Thanks for these Great tips! 🙌🏼🎥
Hey Sean - been loving your content for years now! I’d love to know how you PLAN your videos - whenever you go on a B-roll shoot, you seem to know what shots you’re looking for. What’s your process? How do you create a shot list. Thanks dude

Great ideas for storytelling. Thanks for making me think of creative ways to make a video. I'm so focused on Steps A-F, but it's boring for videos.
This is great feedback! Moving forward, I'm going to tell stories about the small towns I visit rather than simply showing my watchers around. Game changer!

Just came across your channel as I recently started to digging in to filmmaking and story telling to up my game on KZread. Binging out on your videos right now. Thanks for the hard work and advice. I find it more relevant and honest than the years of videos I watched by some of the KZread “gurus”.
I agree that asking for a like and subscribe at the beginning of a video is counterproductive.

I wish my life was interesting enough to have a story to tell or something to teach. Lol It seems like the successful vloggers have the luxury of being out and about, and bringing their audience along with them. Most of the world isn’t on an exotic island or in bustling cities like New York, so sharing that experience with the vlogger is entertaining; much more entertaining than the mundane suburban or rural routine. Running to the store to get milk; is there a story there? I dunno. I’m sure Casey could make a story, with the backdrop of New York. We don’t all have epic backdrops like NY, though. I’m really not trying to be cynical; I’m actually hoping for some advice. Matti, Peter, Sean and Casey all talk about how telling a story is key to a successful vlog. Sean is the only one who gave examples, and I thank you, Sean, for that. It was helpful. I’m still lost on what story I could tell in my ordinary, run of the mill lifestyle. If someone could link it; It would be cool to see a successful vlog channel that either started out as, or currently is based around the ordinary, blazé day in the life of a suburbanite who didn’t get a jumpstart in the film industry. Basically, I learn by example and I’d love to see examples of making an entertaining story from things not considered entertaining. Great content, Sean. I’ve learned so much from you on the technical end of things.
you are on of the KZreadrs whose videos i watch no matter what you Post ...coz you are one of the best KZreadr i Know mate

Ah that is amazing to hear and I really appreciate it!
This is so true. I’ve been trying to become a storyteller for a while now and honestly? I’m not good at it. I don’t really know how to tell a story about fishing content on youtube-you can’t really plan what’s going to happen, when you’re doing an activity. Maybe I’m just dense because some creators definitely have cracked the code, but I just can’t seem to.
@seankitching
Жыл бұрын
Yeah it is definitely hard and something I am continuously trying to improve on! I think you can definitely apply some of these techniques though. Having the obvious goal of catching a specific fish or goal of how many fish can create a hook right from the get go. Then show yourself attempting the goal creating suspense and mystery as to wether you will or wont catch that fish and end with the result or outcome of what you managed. Perfect setup!

- [00:26] 🎬 Importance of storytelling: Effective storytelling in KZread videos is crucial for engaging viewers and keeping them interested throughout the video. - [01:26] 🎣 Opener: Capturing attention immediately at the beginning of the video is essential to prevent viewers from clicking away. - [03:06] 🎥 Approach and angle: Exploring different angles and approaches to convey the same idea or concept can make videos more intriguing and engaging. - [04:40] 🔄 Narrative structure: Instead of a linear "this happened, then this happened" approach, create narratives with causal connections for more engaging storytelling. - [07:12] 🖼 Visual assets: Utilizing visual elements like stock footage, music, and sound effects can enhance storytelling and maintain viewer interest. - [09:28] 📝 Video structures: Incorporating elements like a mission or goal, teasing future events, or showcasing a result at the end can create engaging video structures. - [13:28] 📌 Payoff at the end: Providing a compelling reason for viewers to stick around until the end is crucial for maintaining engagement and retention. - [14:55] 🚫 Avoid premature requests: Avoid asking viewers to like, subscribe, or engage with the channel before providing value, as it may deter viewers from continuing to watch.

I find KZread is full of videos all telling us how to get better results and what cameras to use and so forth - Sean Kitching is not like them! finds ways to speak to the viewer and give solid advice each video rather than showing off and preaching. I am still practicing the B-roll stuff on my own channels and hot dam is it fun, tonight I am off to try some cable cam fun made from a straw /200m bit of string an Action2 mag mount and two large trees. NOW he drops this truth bomb onto me, dang ..tonights video is about making a video haha. Thanks Sean :)

Haha thank you so much I really appreciate that! glad to hear you are having fun with the B roll and I hope your cable cam turned out well!
You so right - i don’t like seeing someone asking for sub or like at the beginning of a video. As well as obvious and really nonsense call to actions for comments 😅 The thing I struggle with, and this even comes before the first 5 seconds of a video, is to get someone click on it 😅 my channel is growing and it’s super fun, a lot of positive feedback, clicks through search results also fine, average watchtime is okay - but the click through rate on suggested videos is waaay to low. Are you planning any Video how to make a good thumbnails and titles? Mine are so boring haha Not clickbaity enough Changed the style now for the upcoming videos from Indonesia - let’s see if it helps. But meanwhile would be thankful for tips from a pro like you 😊 Greetings from the Maluku to Bali 👍🏻

The old saying applies: "Easier said than done."
Storytelling is very hard to learn. You can learn editing, shooting, lighting, even with YT. But storytelling, story structure, rhythm of the story/editing - very hard to teach and to learn. 3 act structure and hero journey are good concepts but not applicable to all of the content.
