The Truth About Skin Filter

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My third time reuploading T_T I'm having the worse luck with exporting, anyways....Some ppl had mix feelings about my last video where I used a beauty filter. It definitely made me think about my relationship with face filters, self image and stigma associated with using it. Let me know what you think and how we can move this conversation forward.

I’m in agreement that iPhone cameras distort and enlarge features and sometimes enhance the contrast of your skin, it’s not an accurate depiction of what we truly look like. It’s hard to not follow suit with filters that correct these undesirable effects. you don’t deserve the scrutiny.

There is this fantastic woman on KZread who is a photographer and she talks about why you don’t recognize yourself In pictures like you see yourself in the mirror. Her name is sorelle amore, And I believe the way she explains the illusion and manipulation of what a camera can do just perfectly. I think everyone and Michelle would find it fascinating. I enjoy it because the way she explains the mechanism of the camera, light, angle and so on makes me realize that’s it’s not me that’s the issue. A camera is trying to do its best in capturing a 3D living thing it’s not going to be perfect. Because life is really, really hard to capture it’s full essence completely there really is nothing wrong with you and this man made tool is trying to capture something whether it’s you, nature , and all living things at its fullest. Do yourself a favor give yourself a break and don’t be hard on yourself, it’s just an warped illusion really of the real thing. And honestly It’s hard to capture gods great masterpieces ❤️

I know I have flaws, but I also like most of my features, and most importantly love myself. Yes! the phone camera lenses distort your face! They make the object closest to the lens appear “larger” which is often why people (including myself) feel like their nose looks larger in photos. The problem isn't your face or the camera. It's more of mental thing with humans, (forgive my shitty science) we see our reflection in the mirror and it's reversed and that's the face we are used to seeing, but when we use a camera that isn't reversed it's weird or in human looking to us because we don't see the person we recognize in reverse. Not to mention cameras can pick up on weird areas.

What u see in mirror isn’t the same reflection as the selfie camera tho? Just human eyes capture what is important differently with lenses, when we look at actual human we focus on one point and see it as 3D, but camera try to capture it all and make it flat 2D, many things can be distorted, during the 3D to 2D process. I can even see the pic that I took for my friends are so different from what they really looks like, and I also do a experiment w my friends to see them in the mirror and compare w what they look in real life the mirror still capture99% realistic look, but the camera probably only 30-70 depends on the lighting and angle

The camera still makes a bigger difference. Different focal lengths can make you look different. The iPhone's front and back cameras have a difference too. I usually mirror my photos so it's reversed but a mirror is more true than a camera. I've looked at my friends in the mirror and they look more similar to their reflection than a phone selfie.

It is important to mention that as well, for young people that would not understand why recreating KZread makeup / r ouatine is less effective in a daily basis, in natural lights, and might creates insecurities they wouldn’t have otherwise. This is so true. Honestly, sometimes using filters can actually make your photo look more true to your face. Obviously, it can SO easily be made to be deceptive, but it's not always the case. Filters have sort of become a necessity because the selfie camera distorts your face no matter what, and we all know our faces well enough. For me personally, the camera widens parts of my face depending on the angle, and it can sort of emphasize my skin texture even though it's actually not as visible in real life.

In regards to camera phones: the focal length of a 'selfie' or front-facing camera has is ironically not optimised for capturing faces. It will make the centre of your face appear larger than it actually is, in relation to the rest of your face. I have quite a narrow nose and high nose bridge but if I take a close-up selfie with my phone's front facing camera, my nose looks huge and squashed and quite bulbous! The best way to take a selfie with a front-facing camera is to extend your arm as far as it can reach and then zoom in on yourself to best get an accurate photo without distortion. Additionally if you're able to use the self-timer or Camera Remote (via Apple Watch) the camera on the back of your phone is far superior for capturing accurate photos! I can't speak to Android devices because the hardware differs so much from brand to brand and model to model, but I can note that there's likely a similar effect as front-facing camera are almost always not as powerful as their rear-facing counterparts but I will note that I have read that often due to Android being a more open platform compared to iOS, often the camera sensor and other photography hardware is not optimised for capturing the best quality photos and really harnessing the power of the embedded hardware in conjunction with the software. This is obviously again going to differ a lot between manufacturers but because iPhone firmware is so closely guarded by Apple they are probably the most optimised camera sensors, next to other camera capable phones that are designed with high-quality photography in mind. I hope that clarifies a few things, sorry if that was a mansplanation and I'm happy to edit my comment if it was.

Thank you for clearing the air on this issue. It was a little hard to tell if a skin filter was being used in the video when it was zoomed out, but on close up shots, it was obvious you weren't blurring your skin. It was honestly so refreshing to see pores up close and remember just how normal they are (I know it's crazy to remember that pores are normal but that's how brain washed we've become).

this is a great conversation. my face looks SO different than in the mirror and i’m just a normal person not being in front of the camera all the time and not always prepping for a photoshoot and taking it from the right angles. i dont use filters heavily but a little modifications are fine.

I did notice the warping in the last video, but seeing the amount of warping and still being able to see your texture, I 100% understood it was about the shape of your face. I feel the same way when I try to take selfies, my phone camera makes my face so much wider. I’m glad you brought up this topic 😌

I actually know what you're saying about phone cameras distorting faces and bodies in general. I've seen it happen when switching between modes. It'll stretch out with one and then the other, it might not but sometimes does.

I never knew skin filters existed and I have been feeling REALLY bad lately about not having smooth skin and feeling that even my makeup is wrong for me because I can still see my pores and fine lines around my eyes. Wow. Now I know every picture on the net is just an illusion.

This was great! Loved hearing your thoughts on it. Filters can be tough in the make-up space, because there is the concern that a filter isn't giving an accurate portrayal of what a cosmetic or skincare product is actually doing, or looks like when used. Appreciate your honesty here and just having a chill chat about it. It doesn't have to be a huge dramatic thing. Thanks, Michelle!!

Since your earliest days on KZread (OG fan here, hi! I loved your vampire look from way back, btw.), I've always appreciated your sincerity. The fact that you listened to peoples' feedback on this issue (which I'm sure was not all kindly-worded or intended to be well-meaning, constructive feedback...), let alone come back and address this in a self-reflective, open, discussion-oriented manner, without defensiveness, is applaudable. You're a real class act, Michelle!! Please continue to be true to you, your "brand" that got you to where you are now, and trust that the Phan Fans have your back. Looking forward to your future content! ❤️

This makes me feel relieved knowing that cameras do distort our features. I have always felt weird when I see myself in photos. I can never understand why my photo self looks bad compared to my mirror self. But I hope we can all reach a point where we can appreciate every flaw we have and be happy that these flaws make us unique. 💓

I love how Michelle is upfront about this. I'm learning to love my skin and just let it breathe. There are some days I want to make myself look pretty, but my acne disagrees lol, so i use face filters, I'm not ashamed and I'll totally be upfront about it. I just wish people out there don't give a wrong message when it comes to the beauty content. (Just putting it out there )

Michelle is 100% right. iPhone cameras distort your face beyond recognition which is why I avoid taking selfies because I know that’s not what I really look like. I as well take my photos with a beauty camera, I adjust to look exactly the way I look in the mirror.

Michelle, I just want to say THANK YOU 💖 over the past year I’ve been having bad skin issues because of stress and hormonal imbalance, I never felt self conscious about my skin but the last few months have been so hard. Seeing your no foundation tutorial was groundbreaking to me, seeing your natural skin with no filter made me realize that skin has texture, and for the first time in months I had to courage to go out for diner with no foundation on. And I felt amazing 💖 a little over 10 years ago I learnt how to do my makeup with your tutorials, and now being closer to 30 I’m learning to love my own skin. So, again, thank you ✨
