Honestly, I've had my harbor freight stand for a good 3 years and have yet to have a problem with it. Then again my bike doesn't have arms to bend it in half....

I'm sure the companies he is supporting (whether paying him or not) are great, but many cheaper stands are absolutely fine. The ones he bent prove nothing of how well they work as stands, he put stress in a way they just simply will not be stressed in use for what they were designed.

So i notice everyone in this thread says the Harbor Freight stand is fine except the guy who pointed out he has the ZX10R. Which got me wondering, what and how large of bikes do you other folks have? Maybe the Harbor Freight is just sketchy with 1000cc bikes 🤷

I’ve been using reasonably priced stands for years and not once had a problem of a bike being poorly supported or fall. Just take time to adjust them properly and they’ll serve you fine. You don’t need stands that cost hundreds of £’s or $’s.

There are plenty of riders who have used cheaper stands and not had a problem for sure. There are also plenty of stories from riders who learned this lesson the hard way. IMO there are better places to save a few bucks than a set of motorcycle stands. The purpose of this is to show even though they may look similar in the photos they are not all created equal. All riders should do their own research before purchasing so their expectations match the end result. Thanks for sharing your experience. - Brian Van

Your test is meaningless, you are putting forces where they don’t matter just to brake the handle of the stand... you can brake a brick by gently knocking it in half but you can also use it to stack it neatly 20 storeys high. And that my friend is good analogy here ;) I have the second stand that you broke. My bike is 230kg and I’ve been sitting on it and jumping around and it’s all fine

Thank you so much. Perfect timing for me. I bought a CBR1000RR after not riding for 25 years. I was confused by all the brands of stands out there and this video was exactly what I needed. I was an engineer at one of the very best machine tool builders (lathes, machining centers, tooling, etc) in the world. Not only is the design and thickness of components important, the actual material (steel) analysis, heat treatment, welding technique, and many, many other things. This is why all these things are so closely regulated in the aerospace industry. Trust me, the Far East still has a lot to learn about building reliable, durable products.

I have one of those Track Side stands, and it's not all bad. It works great for storing or wrenching on my superlight sport bikes (Cagiva Mito, Aprilia RS125, Suzuki RG125) but I wouldn't use it to hold up any of my big bikes. Pitbull all the way.

Im a big fan of stg. But I Agreed I have the same trackside rear, as well as the trackside fork lift and head lift. The fork lift is honestly a little sketchy. The head stand is 100% safe and fine. Notice the only one he tries to bend are $100+ stand vs a $ harbor freight stand. I can't bent my trackside stands with any reasonable amount of force, that includes standing on it while its on its side. Ill give you alot of the fork lift stands are sketchy, some better than others. But by the logic of this video, bike stands should be made out of 3" solid steal bar. That way if you try to use is as a shackle between two trucks doing a tug of war, your bike won't fall over? 🤷‍♂️ lol. Seems like alot over unnecessary energy and flexing in a tight shirt going on here.. "watch me bend 10ga aluminum in a direction it wasn't ment to be stressed!!"

My trackside stands are approaching 8 years old. I'm confident enough to sit on the bike with stands in place and I weight 200lb. Could they have been built stronger? Sure, but that comes at a cost. Like Van said he's no engineer so he's bending the stands at a direction that the stands would never go. If I plan on using stands sideways I will buy pitbull stands.

He ain't wrong. The pitbull stuff is just miles ahead of less expensive stands in terms of quality and strength. You buy a pitbull stand you're never going to have to replace it if you're using it for it's intended purpose. and it's going to have no problems supporting any bike on the market. You can put a bike up on a pitbull stand and then sit on the bike, and you'll feel completely stable. I tried sitting on my 675 while it was up on a HF equivalent stand and it didn't feel secure at all getting up on the bike. After I got off I could see that one of the pipes had flexed. I haven't owned any woodcraft stands, but if their stands are like they crash protection products, they're also going to be excellent.

I been using a track side stand for 6 years with no issue. I just had to grind away some metal that was blocking my chain adjuster but it work fine. It would been more convincing if you would of done a strength test with the force pushing down on the stands, like if a bike was on it, to see how and when it would fail.

The issue is instability caused by lateral force not direct load. When you work on the bike on the stand it moves around. The weaker the stand, the more it moves and becomes unstable. I stand behind the fact I should not be able to destroy a stand designed to hold a 400 + pound machine. - Van

I'm living in another side of the world and I have to say that I do trust strongly in US & EURO goods. From an engineering standpoint, they are reliable and durable. I bought a pitbull stand many years ago and I must say it still stand strong in the test of time. There are other items that I do buy such as flyscreen, fairings, protection and etc. Lasted years and years eventhough through the rough and tough. As a rider, I do compare the cheaper alternatives to the harder ones in terms of durability, history of R&D and few other components such as quality and material. Depends on each individual on choosing which investments that will last a lifetime or rather the economical side of things. Each person to your own and its all about the passion of sharing your interest, especially the freedom to ride. Safety is still no. 1 and I support BV for sharing his knowledge and practical everyday tests on the quality. Cheers.

Sportbike Track Gear I am not sure what you mean by, " this is becomes incredibly clear when you lift a bike with it". I have lifted Pan Europeans, Honda CB1000R, Aprilia Tuono APRC, BMW S1000XR, All without issue or distortion of any way. This must make it a complete piece of garbage! KZread sensationalism does not make for truthful and factual information. Whatever floats you boat I suppose. Keep up the good work! That is ironic sarcasm just incase you missed it!!!!!! 😎

I too have the second stand you broke and I agree that these stands do not have to have much lateral strength. I'm 100kg and I've had my zx14r on these stands with me on it and guess what? No damage. No bending or flexing and my bikes live on their stand after 2 years zero issues. Show us how the stands break with bikes on them as they are designed for. Yeah..... didn't think so. Nice gains.

All due respect that stand is complete garbage. Have you ever had the opportunity to compare it to a Pit Bull and use both? - Van

It is beyond me why you would lift any bike with that low quality stand, especially high end bikes like those you have listed. Have you ever had the opportunity to lift a bike with a Pit Bull stand to compare? If you have not you need to get that done then add a couple more comments. - Brian Van

It's something I've never had to worry about. Back in the day when my 600 lb. '88 Katana 1100 was made most bikes came with center stands that worked amazingly well. 32 years and 114,000 km later mine's sitting in the parking lot on the center stand right now. I understand manufacturers want to make the bikes light and all but at 68 years old I don't think I could put a bike on a stand alone stand like that, ... at least not without someone else holding the bike straight. I've watched one vlogger do it by himself with old GSXR 1100's though so I guess it can be done.

We are pretty race track focused here at STG. These type of stands shown in this video are for track use or riders who like to do their own service on sportbikes that do not have a center stand. - Van

Built in the US is not a global stamp of quality. Both Pit Bull and Woodcraft produce quality products here in the US. As for cars I drive GM products (spent most of my former career in a Cadillac dealer as a tech) and have some issues for sure but overall completely satisfied. Over the years I have worked on nearly every make and model vehicle, they all have their issues IMO. - Brian Van
