I like how you say enthusiast. I believe every inch of that statement. I watch so many of your videos for how to do it my self. I see different products and really feel if you would use it so will I. And your videos have led me to doing what I can on my bikes. A 400 and zx10r. When I first started riding putting air in the tire was about the limit of Mt knowledge. I now help others share advice and recommend different products to people. I have done everything except rebuild a engine and the valve check. I have learned a ton from your videos and appreciate every second you put in sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated and I can agree if you love your bike you will enjoy working on it.

If you go to any chain manufacture website, they will recommend kerosene for cleaning the chain, which doesn’t damage the o-rings... I use a small brush for cleaning the dishes ($2) which lasts at least a year, and I use it every day... after going round the chain and rear sprocket a few times, also cleaning between links and plates, put some newspaper under your bike, and blow the chain off with compressed air... with this simple procedure alone you’ll be amazed at how much sand and grit comes off the chain... go around the chain several times and you’ll be amazed at how much cr*p comes off the chain... then I hit it with chain wax, but only on the rollers, inside and outside... lastly I’ll hit the orings with some penetrating lube called Joker440 made by Motorex Switzerland... the back wheel spins like crazy... :) I’ve seen some really rank front sprocket areas too, that just takes time and effort... !

In third world we use diesel and tooth brush to clean the dirt and grease. And just spray simple o ring chain lube and do the same thing as we hear chain rattle again. No fancy spray bottles.

No it will not cause the chain to rust as there is still a film of lube left on the surface as long as you did not use a cleaner when you wiped it off. - Van

I've been using this kit and I like it. I usually use the chain wax with the kit. I've always wondered is it necessary to warm up the chain first (ride the bike for a few moments) when using the chain wax?

Warming the chain is not a bad idea if you have the opportunity to do so. It is not required that you do so. - Brian Van

The Maxima Chain Cleaner totally mess up the rear rim of my sfv4s :( it’s very corrosive and now there are permanent stain marks on my rims which I can’t get rid of. Would you have any suggestions to get rid of these stains? 🙏🏻

All chain cleaners are pretty gnarly. If you get it on your rim you need to clean it off immediately. IMO if you are getting it on your rim you are using too much. The chain is outside of the wheel and tire so you should not be getting any on either. - Van

Use the straw that comes with the lube, aim for the O-rings & lightly spray (takes practice). I do that, let it sit for several minutes or hours while turnning the wheel every so often. Then I wipe the rest off with a clean rag before I ride.

I just got a xsr900, always have bikes with belt or camshaft. How often I need to clean and lube the chain? And is the chain for this bike a seal one?

It is really an as need situation. You don't want the chain to get super dry. The type of chain lube you use has an impact as well. The white colored chain wax will stay on much longer but some riders do not like how it looks so they will run the clear synthetic lube and apply it more often. - Van

I cleaned it off with some of the Maxima Chain Clean followed by a little Maxima Contact or Suspension clean. Same cleaners I used during the project. - Brian Van

You can use that to clean the chain as well. IMO this Maxima kit is the right way to go. The kit is just over $20 and the brush is $11, total is under $40. You will be able to clean and lube your chain for multiple seasons with this so it delivers solid value. Most people have no use for kerosene or diesel fuel and would have to go purchase an approved container, store it etc... which would make that a real pain in the ass IMO. With the kit you also have the MPPL which can be used for other maintenance items on the bike or around the house. - Brian Van

The van man, that's about what I expected for a chain clean. My manual probably tells me but how often you recommend it for street ridding. Coming up on my first oil change

I do our race bikes before every weekend and lube the before each day. For a street bike just keep an eye on the chain and hit it when it looks dry or overly nasty. Will be different for every rider as we all ride in different conditions. - Van

Hey Van I've got an R3 with 30,000 miles in two years. I do a lot of commuting. With the chain wax, what kind of intervals would you say it needs to be applied vs chain guard?

If you ride that much you will be best served with the chain wax IMO. The chain guard will need to be applied much more often to get the same benefit. At the track I lube the chains each morning, for the street I would say once a week. - Van

Brian, what 520 chain and sprocket brand(s) would you suggest for a daily-commuter 2018 Kawasaki Z650 (price not being a factor)? I want the best quality / longest lasting.

For your Z650 I would go with steel Driven 520 Sprockets both front and rear with an RK MAX-X Chain. This kit will perform well and last a long time with proper maintenance. If they are 100% fine there is no reason you can not do this. With that said odds are if the chain is shot the sprockets will have wear on them caused by the chain. Installing the new chain with the old sprockets could damage the new chain and then you are back on step 1. - Van

Great video once again. Only thing I'd mention is to suggest wearing some sort of protective gloves when working with degreasers. Those chemicals will eventually take a toll on bare skin.You the man Brian, two thumbs up.

We use this same kit on all of our bikes, not an issue. Use the cleaner first then apply the MPPL to the chain using it to rinse off the Chain Clean. Good to go as long as you do not let the cleaner sit on the chain for an overly long period of time. - Van

I’ve used Maxima products, especially chain wax for the last 25 years, a really great product, along with the SC1 Clear Coat... but the odour really gets up my nose, and I’m sure not healthy for you... I always have a fan running, use a breathing mask as well... sounds crazy, but health first... I do this for a living, so multiple times per day I use these products...

We send stickers out with each order that is shipped for our warehouse here in MI. - Van

It's not necessary to get all these staffs for chain maintenance as advertised. Kerosene does the job for cleaning the chain pretty well (even it's recommended according to some motorcycle manufacturers as per their their manual) after that just lube it with any branded chain lube.

While you are correct it is far more convenient to have the chain cleaner kit than a gas can full of Kerosene sitting around. - Van

My Hayabusa chain looks like that all the time. I use Dupont chain lube. Maybe once a month go over chain with a paper towel. Chain spotless with no effort. 30k miles so far on this chain. Many more miles to go on it.

Richard Johnson Same here man. It's great stuff that doesn't fling or drip and you can usually pick it up at those big branch style Wal-Mart's(not the typical Walmart) for like $11 per can. Kerosene for cleaning works well when poured into a hand pump spray bottle with a few pieces of paper or some cardboard (as Van did in the video) to keep your tire and rim from getting soaked. I like to try to do a light spray with the lube on the outside links too so they don't rust since my bike is outside most of the time.

We use the synthetic stuff on the track because the chain will get lubed every day or when at MotoAmerica a little before each time the bike hits the track. If you are using the non wax style on a street bike I would try to put a little lube on it weekly. The chain wax will require less applications but looks horrible. - Van

Pretty sure that was a DID ERV 3 which has since been replaced with the ERV 7. Excellent 520 chain. - Van

I use lanolin spray.

I use simple green and 90w gear oil. Literally works fantastic. I used to be into the expensive cool looking products. But u found out gear oil works the best and no dirt builup like those sticky chain lubes

The chain and sprockets will generate some friction which will produce some noise while spinning. As long as you have done your maintenance and the chain is adjusted nothing to worry about. - Van

If you notice a ton of excess flinging off the chain after you lube it you will need to reduce the amount you use the next time. End of the day only so much lube can stick to the chain before it drips or flings off. - Van

The CleanUp goes way faster than the others. The multipurpose lube really isn’t necessary, imo. I like the Chain Wax, due to it not slinging as much as others I’ve tried. Having colored rims, orange, it’s almost impossible to keep it from happening.

No, I would not use a heat gun. Clean off excess lube, get the chain tension set and ride it. Be sure to inspect after the first ride and lube it as needed. - Brian Van

Great video! Why not take the chain off and soak it in kerosene? I would love to buy some kind of product to catch the drops and help keep the chemicals off the tire/bike.

Sport bike chains are installed using a rivet link which makes removing and reinstalling it difficult. Kerosene can be used for sure but then you have to store it etc... If you had a need for kerosene in your home then this would work for sure. I like to wedge cardboard between the tire and swingarm with a drain pain placed underneath to catch run off. - Van

Chain was super dirt before I cleaned it. Remember this is a race bike and not a street bike. The chain needs to be pristine and well lubed. - Van

They won't be on there for very long. The paper rags do this to some degree but come apart very easily. - Van

Today's "O" Ring chains are sealed and you CANNOT get Lube into them very successfully , Yes clean the outside and then a hi tack hi pressure grease is ideal when I say Hi Pressure I am referring to the Greases ability to resist the tendency of the lube to being squeezed out from between sprocket teeth and roller's do NOT wipe the lube OFF but allow the propellant /Solvent to evaporate leaving behind the hi-tack lube only then wipe with a brush to distribute the lube . Just do not wipe it until the solvent is all gone as it's job is to assist in getting the Lube into the chain joints by greatly reducing surface tension. Remember that your trying to get lubricant inside the roller on top of the hollow Pin through which the solid pin from the outer side plates runs the "O" Ring seals these side plates. Oh I'd advise to NOT use Contact cleaner as the solvents in this product may effect the '"O" Rings

Public confession time: I own a Honda that sees almost daily use getting me back and forth to work. I have ignored chain maintenance on this bike always. Spent some time today cleaning and lubing the chain in an effort to be better in 2020. I swear I could tell the difference as soon as I was finished. Less friction, smoother rotation. Learn from me, do not ignore your chain. (1-12-'20)

The chain clean tools and chemicals last a very long time, you will be using the same stuff for several seasons. Staying on top of the chain maintenance will improve performance and make the chain and sprockets last longer. - Van

DuPont chain saver leaves a semi whitish yellowish wax in the areas on the chain you couldn’t reach after wipe off. I used it for about a year. It dirties chains quickly too.

Why are you doing this video AFTER you already have cleaned the god damn chain?😅

Not enough time to fit all the content that needs to be included. It takes longer than 4 minutes to clean the chain or install a kit of rearsets. My goal is to help riders get the project done not collect KZread views. - Van

How did you determine that for an outside standpoint

If you have another reason to have kerosene around this is not a bad idea. - Van

Too much of product. If a track rider then this is the best may be. But for a normal bike like an r3 we only need kerosine to clean and use the lube

You can use the kerosene if you prefer. The reality is the products we show are much more convenient than storing a can of kerosene to clean your chain. - Van

Hey dude, please wear gloves when you do this... !! Especially when spraying those products on your hands...

@@sportbiketrackgear I’ve been doing this for years as well, I now have multiple myeloma...

Promotion, advertising, marketing...nothing else. Kerosene and gear oil. $17 4 liter jug will last 5 years of cleaning. Also use kerosene to clean frame and wheel from flinging lube.

My chains get cleaned after each track weekend and never get really dirty. - Van

Till 6: 45 bla bla bla.

I must be lazy: Unless you are running in a championship GP, or an Isle of Man event...... just get yourself a shaft-drive...... really..... 6.5 % of 100 hp??? WTF, you'll never use it anyway.....

We do the majority of our riding on the race track during track days and racing. No modern sport bikes are produced with shaft drive. - Van

@@sportbiketrackgear No old school sport bikes had shaft drive either....WOW!! , show us ALL the trophies you got, using your 'sport-bike' with chain drive....makes NO difference, ITRW....only at the top 0.5%....you in that space? LOLs.

The 'losses' in shaft dirve compared to chain are less than running on a hot day vs running cold day, on the same dry track... You MUST be real CHAMPION to notice the difference...is that you, Nendo-the-Champ?
