The truth about full time travel and youtube.

We've been having a bit of a hard time lately.
Come sit down with us as we go over where we've been for the last month, how we feel about full-time travel, being a KZreadr the future of our channel and our own mental health and what we are doing to get some much needed balance in life.

Hi Rhett and Claire, my name is Darko and i hope you will read this comment. I am 42yrs old from Netherlands and i have had exactly what you are having, i tend to write a lot so bear with me. Hope this will help you out to recover quickly. Like you, i travelled the world for many months on end for many years (asia also), endless adventures, trips etc. I also do at same time serious fitness (intense physical exercise 5-7x a week, coupled with cardio sessions and intens diet regime.) plus i work full time as a sales manager with good deal of responsibility. Also have a very active social life. high achiever mentality to the core. All these things are positive in and of itself BUT they are each a STRESS on the body. a new bed, not your pillow, weird noises, strange food, no family around, temperature, walking, making videos, editing, money issues etc etc etc. each is a STRESSOR on the body. So yes in core you need and already have to change your lifestyle: sleep, naps, rest, limited work, light walking, diet consisting of HIGH protein and steady nutrient intake etc. But key point here is that i want to explain HOW and WHY this happens in the body: So our bodies deal with stress by 1 single organ: the adrenal glands (so its 2 of them, 1 on top of each kidney). Adrenal glands with each stressor release cortisol as well as DHEA and Pregnenolone to balance this cortisol out. With short term stressors this works perfectly, however with chronic nonstop ongoing stressors this balance shifts in favor of cortisol and DHEA and Pregnenolone (and as consequence the sex hormones) fall off. This gives the following devastating symptoms: epic brainfog, like brain in honey with delay and cant focus on anything (even visual impairness). this is utterly disastrous anxiet panic attacks tired but cannot sleep well very low motivation agrivated about small things feeling of DOOM and overwhelming from literally the smallest things depression (even clinical depression) Now what i recommend is the following: go to a clinic, get blood drawn and test for DHEA -S (sulfate). This will show your bodies depot of DHEA. I bet you have mid to low range on this test. Optimal numbers are towards the top 15% of the reference range, and for active indiiduals like you even higher. No doctor or anybody else will tell you cause most have no clue. They check you and all is fine and you feel like a lunatic. What helped me a lot is the following (aside from obvious lifestyle changes which u already implemented) DHEA suplement: 100mg per day (for female less, check every 6 weeks bloodwork) take on empty stomach in am Pregnenolone: 50-100mg per day (half am half pm) Adrenal Cortex: 50mg per day take on empty stomach in am Licorice Root: 250mg per day take on empty stomach in am Other supplements with high value for this; vit d3: 6000iu per day Omega 3 fats: 3-4gr per day Vitaminc C: 5gr per day Vit B complex: 2 tabs of high dosages NAC (N-acetyl-cysteine): 2gr per day half am and half pm Zinc: 25mg per day Magnesium Bisglycenate: 400-600mg per day As far as gym: take it EASY and 2x per week max and not to failure training. light walks every day 20-30min are optimal. yoga and massages are optimal. Lots of sleep on circadian times, no drinking etc. goes without saying. Your adrenal glands have been punished and squeezed till their very limits by the lifestyle and lack of rest and support. go-go-go attitude. Luckily adrenal glands do NOT permanently burn out (this is called addisons disease) and they come back in time and rest. Supplements and lifestyle speed this recovery up SIGNIFICANTLY. Anyway this is my longest post ever on a youtube video, because i know exactly how you feel. EXACTLY to a T. cheers and be well, you are both great Darko

Hey guys! Really sorry to hear you've been feeling burnt out lately. That is totally common. I know for us, we really find our center and stability through following the teachings of Jesus Christ, who, Himself was a nomad and thus can relate to our nomadic lifestyle for the past 3 years. Quickly in our first year of travel we shifted from fast paced travel to staying in places for a month or more at a time. That allowed us to have our routine and stability while still traveling and working. We are happy to hear you are not giving up because we see how talented you are and we miss your videos. Love you brus!

We just discovered your channel and so glad we did. This was an excellent video and it reinforced what we do in our own lives and makes us feel better. We travel the world as well but are an older couple. There are times where we wish we could go at your pace, because life is just so short and we want to see everything. But we kept our house as our home base and we instead travel 2 months on and 2 months off. That’s been a great balance for us. Maybe something like that can work for you. Good luck!

This was perfectly explained and we totally relate. We experienced burnout earlier this year as we are also travelling full-time, working on our KZread, blog, freelancing etc and I think we're still recovering to be honest without giving ourselves a real break. We're also going to be spending 6 months in Bali (also our second home as we've spent a lot of time here) so it would be lovely to meet up with other creators. Hope you guys are doing okay!

I do know the hard work that entailed in being a blogger and that’s the reason why I didn’t go into it. I don’t think I can enjoy the trips if I am constantly thinking about what need to go into the videos. I’m a solo traveler too and I’d rather enjoy the scenery and food and culture than thinking about filming and editing and uploading videos. Take care you two and rest for a while before you start traveling again.

😭 We can relate to this SO much, as I'm sure most travel youtubers can. It's hard to work on your mental health when there's no stability in your life and your job is so openly judged by external things like comments/views/etc. Hopefully Bali helps for now and the plans for an apartment work out well! Even just not needing to worry about visas must be so relieving!

Well done you both for recognising the need to create your home base and just chill. Don't worry Rhett, your distress about feeling disappointed in yourself - it's just that you're not meeting the image you have of yourself in your mind and the image of you that you've placed in the minds of others. Don't worry, it will all be fine. Just accept yourself as you are now and you know that everything changes as you will too. Go with the flow. And thanks for your great videos. Keep safe.

Sorry to hear you are experiencing burn out! We are just in the beginning steps of our KZread career and this has reminded us to pace ourselves and to keep as much of a daily routine as we can, even while on the road. Completely agree that daily workouts are what give you life and energy and as soon as we don't get them, we definitely feel sluggish (even if we are walking 20,000 steps a day and carrying a suitcase). Anyway, so nice to meet you guys! Enjoy your break! x

Thanks for sharing and being so open and vulnerable. We’ve experienced this as well and for me (Jenn) I got hit hard by this during our India trip (after 3 months of fast travel and full time travel) we cut the trip in half and returned to Thailand for 30 days down time and to rethink everything. After a few weeks rest we have a plan. BUT when that wall hits it hits hard. We are planning a trip home to Canada with all of these same concerns and feelings about full time long travel, slow travel, fast travel, short trip travel. We’re really happy you are both feeling more fresh and following what feels right for you!

Hey guys, I’m a frequent traveler too. Just came back from Machu Pichu and the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador. Traveled for six weeks in these two countries. I’m home now in Tucson, and it hasn’t been two weeks home, and now I’ve booked myself to go home to the Phil and thinking about going to India and have been watching your videos. You need to take a break even when you’re traveling. I always take a day or two off days and stay in my hotel and rest. It’s very common to experience exhaustion and burn out when traveling. So take it easy and regroup. Traveling is addicting. I’ve been traveling all of my life. There comes a point when you need to have a home base and travel maybe every three months, which what I’ve done. You need a home , a permanent home, I agree. Good luck.

There are times when we don't publish a new video for a few weeks or more. Sometimes, you just need to take a break and enjoy life without the camera. We are different from you, in that we do slow travel. Even though we try to stay in one place for at least a month, it's still not our home. We certainly miss not being able to see our family and friends all the time too, which can make us feel quite lonely at times. Anyway, we hope you will take the time to enjoy being in Bali and try to figure out your future plans. Tom and Mike :)

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your openness in sharing your experiences with anxiety and brain fog. ❤ It truly touches my heart, as I've been through a similar ordeal over a year ago, much like Rhett. I remember thinking I was having a heart attack, rushing to the hospital, only to discover it was a crippling panic attack. The past year has been a rollercoaster, filled with days of brain fog, relentless dizziness, an inability to concentrate on even the simplest tasks, and the frustrating struggle to articulate my thoughts. While I've tried to maintain a balanced life, eating healthily and working out, I've come to understand that the constant barrage of information from endless hours on social media and staring at screens for most of the day plays a significant role in our mental well-being. Our modern society bombards our minds with stimuli that can become overwhelmingly chaotic, especially when coupled with the countless triggers we encounter during our travels. It's essential to take a step back and give ourselves the headspace we so desperately need, but I implore you, please don't ever stop pursuing what you love. You are all truly incredible, and your journey is an inspiration to us all. 💪❤

Sorry to hear. Take your time to recover. I suffered from burnout after working all day trying to make a living for myself online. It's stressful, and I can imagine the uncertainty and insecurity of losing a job and traveling simultaneously. I suffered a lot from fatigue, so I couldn't workout the same way I used to. I could do low-intensity strength training for 15-20 minutes or so before I felt too dizzy and foggy in my head, but I mostly had to focus on golfing and talking walks. I had to try to listen to my mind and body and not push myself like I was used to doing, but it sure was frustrating and I wasn't the best at giving myself what I needed... Took me a year to recover. I think Ashwagandha helped a bit, and NSDR/Yogra Nidra/Meditation is probably even better. You'll be back soon, just make sure you don't push yourself too hard because that will just set you back and prolong the issue (speaking from my own experience). Quite a humbling experience and one that requires vulnerability, but you're obviously well on your way! Take care. 💞

Totally understand you guys, your body and mind need a break. Some people think travelling is just like taking a holiday, it is all fun stuff. For me, it is not, sometimes it is a challenge I decided to take on for myself. It needs lots work and preparation, facing stress on the road, stay strong mentally and physically. But I choose to do it as I want to see the world as much as I can before I die. I have a full time job, so I only travel abroad by taking annual leaves or extending my business trips. I've visited 12 countries in last 14 months, next trip will be 6 countries in 3 weeks, I need to prepare my body and mind for it, see how it goes. Thanks for sharing your experiences, best wishes for you two ! 🙂🙏

Oh yes, I’ve burned out plenty of times while doing content creation and running a business over the last 10 years. 😅 It’s good you guys are figuring out how to do it sustainably. It’s super important for long term mental health and sustainability.

We've been watching your excellent videos from the start. Burn out is completely normal in so many professions. Content creation sounds like an easy gig but in reality it's like an iceberg with the videos everyone sees being the absolute tip, but underneath there's a massive section of work that people don't see. I also edit videos and end up fed up with the end result because I've heard the soundtrack 1000 times during editing or I spot that one tiny mistake I made during the editing and rendering took 3hrs so it's not worth re-exporting it! 😂 We'll be over in SA travelling the garden route again in Feb, one day we'll bump in to youz and the beers are on me! 🍻

Loved the rawness, honesty and the awareness you guys brought to this. ❤ I feel people often think as digital nomads we all just sit on the beach, work 2 hours and live on trust funds... would have been nice though.😅😜 When in reality we still deal with all the normal things life throws at one; and on top of that actually spend more hours working to make this dream life "work" (whether that job is a full time content creators and self employed, like you guys which is even more work and stresful, or full time employed by a company). And most of our "free time" as digital nomads go into travel planning to find options that fit the budget which makes your point of decision fatigue so true. But as you guys mentioned which resonates so well is that we are also so privileged to live these wonderful free lifes where we can rather choose decision fatigue and living an epic life over having no options or freedom of choice (even though it is so nice to sometimes just have a "normal life" for a month or two when taking breaks from travel 🤣). All about the balance and doing whats right for you in the moment🤗

Love this comment😂❤️. I often wonder if life would just be so much easier if we were those trust fund babies! The travel planning, especially on a budget like you mentioned, is the most time consuming part of this lifestyle and I feel like it would be soooo much easier if we didn't have budgets at all😂. So glad you found the video relatable though, keep doing what you're doing and practice gratitude everyday for this life!

We've been full time travellers for nearly 10 years now. We run our (non travel related) business online and we quickly learned that constant travel and work is impossible. So we tend to do 3/4 months of moving around travelling and then at least 1 or 2 months in one spot to rest and reset. Burnout is very real.

Panic attacks and anxiety are survivable. I have suffered from both for 50 years. Learning the triggers, and desensitizing myself to them was helpful. Bio-feedback helps. Years of talk therapy to learn how to cope did not help. Sometimes meds are needed until you learn how to be comfortable in your skin during an episode. An attack always passes and you feel normal again. Talk openly about it with a trusted companion when you see it rising. Don't run away from it. Panic attacks do not kill you. You just feel really icky for about 45 minutes until the adrenal glands burn themselves out. Having a sense of humor regarding the attack is helpful. Give it a name so you can address it in the 3rd person when in a public setting. When they are severe in your life you can actually have a panic attack thinking about the possibility of having a future panic attack. Meditation training was the key to removing my anxiety of having future panic attacks and released me from the need for anti-anxiety meds 20 yrs ago. Panic attacks are mental and physical responses to perceived future fearful situations. It is the "flight" on hyperboost response in the fight or flight scenario. Try to not allow yourself to avoid the trigger scenario, the more you avoid the more you will avoid it in the future and more likely to panic when you think of the scenario .... some people become agoraphobic due to untreated panic attacks. Sounds like you both are working toward healthy solutions to this life-limiting phenomenon. Not all the solutions work for every person. You will find what works for you. LMAO when Rhett said 35 was getting too old....I am 70 and heading to India for a 4 month Buddhist pilgrimage. My children are older than you. Your lives are just beginning. :D

It must have been really hard for you guys to get through with this mental situation. Although, don't regret your decision of being a digital nomad. Not everyone can live this life and not everyone can afford it. You lot have spent your best years at top destinations around the world that most people only dream of. I've watched your videos time to time even though I'm not a subscriber 🤣 Imagine how many souls are with you on your voyage that live through a screen from their homes. You guys make that happen for them so don't regret that. I've tried vlogging once and I know it's quite hard with everyone looking at you and noticing what kind of weird crap is he doing 😂 and if you have social anxiety then this feeling is a bonus lol. Why don't you guys try meditation through religion? It helps. Hope you guys find peace and serenity.

it`s crazy how many KZreadrs experience burnout - the standards this platform demands from creators are insane! I made similar discoveries and talked about the truth behind monetization in one of my recent videos. Honestly, if you don`t make YT your full-time job it`s almost impossible to get monetized but to actually be able to live from the platform you will easily drive yourself to burnout.

BRU. Hmmm. Yea. You are right. You are nit the first ones who have this experience. I am just traveling over one months in South Korea. And there is still an other months ahead. My base is in Colombia. This helps a lot. But…..what helps in my case is…that my living does not depend on an income via KZread. We do run the Hostal Capurgana. And in Capurgana there are no shopping Mals, cinemas, expensive restaurants. There is even no power for 24 hours. And as well: There are no cars…only little traffic…. So the money stays n our pocket until we decide to start again a 2 or three months tour. Good luck for your new way………
