THE TRUTH ABOUT CAMP | What working at a summer camp in America really like *WITH PICTURES & VIDEOS*

Ойын-сауық

In the summer of 2018, I went and did an experience which I’d always wanted to do and that was Work at a summer camp in America. In this video I wanted to get really real and honest with you and give you the truth about what it’s really like working at a summer camp in America and all the things you need to know before you go!
I had some amazing experiences whilst out there but also some not so great experiences so I wanted to tell you EVERYTHING that you may encounter whilst you’re working at a summer camp!
The topics I talk about:
1. Is it like the movies? - what does camp look like and what happens there
2. The kids
3. The structure of the summer and day in the life as a camp counsellor
4. The main pros and cons and would I recommend?
I want to create some more videos on this topic as there is so much to talk about so please let me know if you have any questions! In future videos I will tell you stories about my time at camp and travelling afterwards as well as tips for packing, getting paid, choosing your camp etc!
Tips for the CAMP AMERICA application process:
• HOW TO GET HIRED FOR C...
WHAT TO PACK for Camp America:
• WHAT TO PACK FOR CAMP ...
I really hope you enjoy this video - if you do, please give me a THUMBS UP and SUBSCRIBE if you enjoy my content. There is so much more to come and I can't wait to share it with you!

    Loving your channel so glad I stumbled across it you got some really great content and earned a new subbie here! This sounds like the best experience, the kids doing pranks must be so funny I bet its hard to keep a straight face! And 14 people in one bunk that must get tense at times haha! Still I would love to do this. I was meant to be doing it this year but obviously with everything going on its cancelled really sad times. I went through camp leaders and I would 0/10 recommend them at the moment. Out of £600 that I paid they're refusing to give me any more than £175 refund which is an absolute scam that I can't even afford to accept considering I never ended up leaving the county its such a nightmare. But really hope to do it someday so thanks for sharing your experience :)

This can risk you getting selected for another however, I can’t imagine it being a huge risk and if you’ve applied now for next year you’ve got plenty of time to find the right camp for you so I’d say, keep looking until you’re happy :)

    Hey thanks so much!! Ahh only 2 months away that’s so exciting! So I guess it may vary from camp to camp but at my camp, the showers were all just cubicles next to eachother with curtains across the front. So you’d never see anyone but were in very close proximity to someone else having a shower. Saying that, you can always find time to use the showers when no one else is! And if you’re more a senior member of staff then you will likely get your own shower ☺️ Have a great time!!

  • @MaisieCraddock

    @MaisieCraddock

    Жыл бұрын

    Counsellors go 2 weeks before to prepare everything ready for the kids arrival as well as getting to know their job roles, training and making friends. It’s a really important 2 weeks and actually one of the best parts of the experience. Numbers of counsellors and kids will vary at each camp but their websites will give rough numbers. Usually 1 counsellor to every 8-10 kids I would say. At my camp, I didn’t have my own room - we shared with the kids but the more senior staff just shared with co workers and I know at other camps, specialist counsellors sometimes don’t sleep with the kids in the same room, it’s just general foundries that do. There might be an option to go home after the first session but ideally the camp would like you there for the whole time as bringing in a replacement would be hard. Yes you get 30 days as part of your J1 working visa that means after you’ve finished working there you have 30 days to stay in the country and travel if you wish. 30 days is just the rules on the visa, I don’t know why :)

  • @MaisieCraddock

    @MaisieCraddock

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey I applied through Camp America which is an agency that guides you through every step and puts you in touch with camps who then choose to hire you! If you watch my video about the application process, it will explain it a little better! But as it was through an agency and more of a summer experience than a job, I got paid what they call pocket money so I think it was like $1000 - $1500 for the whole 2.5 months but it will vary at each camp and if you apply direct to the camps and don’t go through an agency you will get some more money as the agency won’t take a percentage of it! Hope that helps 😌

    Hi Michael! Aw this exact same thing happened to me. You’ll be absolutely fine, you’ll just be expected to have basic knowledge of taking pictures on the camera you’re using which you will be shown at camp / can Google. You’ll pick it up quick and from my experience - Sports mode on the camera makes for the best photos whilst the kids do activities. Just make sure you get photos of each kid in their activities & look at previous examples from past years for what kind of stuff you need to do! You’ll have a blast and honestly it’s one of the best jobs you can get at camp and you meet everyone and go everywhere!

    The interview is basically just the point where Camp America assess whether you are suitable for the programme (so just a nice, all round kind of person) and then if you pass, it will be added to your camp america profile, along with a report about you from your interviewer and then camps can then see your profile and choose to hire you from that! Or after your interview, try and go to a recruitment fair and meet the camps directly and get hired on the spot! 😌🤞

    At my camp they didn’t, camp counsellors would share a bunk with 4 other councillors and the kids. Although if you had more of a leadership position then you would probably just share with fellow leadership colleagues and no kids 😌

    @@MaisieCraddock Ah awesome. Thank you so much. I was wondering if you would mind helping me out. I signed up with Camp Leaders this year. It's my first time doing this. I was ready to throw myself in the deep end. I was accepted after an arduous process but as it happens I seriously feel I've been taken for granted because I read the terms and conditions and compared it with the website Camp America and I seriously feel I am being scammed.. They are expecting me to pay an unbelievable amount like 2 grand. I just want to be treated fairly that is my only wish. Anyways Maisie what should I do in this situation? Should I just do the interview again with this new agency or should I just stay where I am?

    @@360PATCH hello! Sorry for the delayed response. I don’t know much about Camp Leaders but I have heard of it so don’t think it’s a scam but that does sound like a lot of money! If you’ve not paid anything, I’d suggest applying for camp america instead and see where you get with that. It’s worth seeing what Camp leaders are charging you for as it doesn’t add up really! Do the interview with Camp America, it’s been running for over 60 years and they look after you. It’s only around £800 too so much less! Hope it works out for you

    You could but I think it would be more difficult to get placed at the same camp unless you apply direct to the same camp. @@kcsenge5085 it’s okay! And you can apply direct to camps but you can’t do it through Camp America. camp America is basically the recruitment agency that finds you the camps and looks after you throughout the whole process but you can do it more independently and apply to a camp directly and then just sort your own flights and visa out etc. It’s harder that way though and I’d suggest for your first time to do it through an agency as they guide you through it!

    What to do if you are interested to go to one specific camp to go to as a councelor? As I understood, you aply at camp america and camps choose out of applicants. Therefor, the chance to get to your „Dream“ Camp seems very little? @maisiecraddock

  • @MaisieCraddock

    You could reach out to that camp directly and introduce yourself etc. I’m not sure exactly how it works but they could then either recruit you via camp america (more preferable as you’ll then have the support of Camp America) or they could hire you directly and then you’ll have to sort your own flights and arrangements to get to camp. If I was you though I would do it via Camp America and you may be able to tell Camp America your preferred camp too or meet them at a recruitment fair. If you don’t get hired by that camp though at least you’ll have the fall back of others doing it that way :)
