A few corrections based on the feedback I received from Marcus Eriksen, the lead author of the '171 trillion plastic particles' study: MOST IMPORTANT: 06:29: "Over 80% of the plastic emitted to the ocean comes from Asia" - The video implies that Asia is responsible for the majority of plastic in the oceans. This is, in fact, very debated because South East Asian countries have been recipients of the global trade of waste. While there's plenty of plastic leaking from SE Asia, much of it actually originally came from the US and Europe. Other corrections: 05:07: The 171 trillion particles number does NOT include nanoplastics. Only macro and microplastics. The total number of particles if we included nanoplastics would be higher. 05:09: "There's the famous Great Pacific Garbage Patch, 3 times the size of France" - Scientists now steer away from using size comparisons to countries because the boundaries of the accumulation zones in the gyres are not defined. They extend from one continent to another with varying concentrations

your explanation of statement at 06:29 is a nice try but wrong. It assumes that the countries it came from are still responsible for it ending up in the environment even though they not longer have custody of it, they sold it, its not "theirs" anymore. Using your line of argument you need to look at blaming the original source of the plastic base material that the item was made from before it was consumed "in the US and Europe" to then be sold to SEA.. which is probably the SEA or China anyway. Anyone who has seen the filth that just gets dumped into waterways in pretty much any Asian country knows that banning some McDonalds straws is like trying to bail the ocean with a thimble while these waterways are still being used like magic rubbish vanishing machines.

Here is an excerpt of my insights from 75 years of life and the last 35 of them in the subject: Collective Neurosis (Wolfgang Heuer, 2023) The cause of civilisation / "high culture" and all its undesirable developments / deficiencies in civilised society is "The (THE) disease of society" (Kütemeyer, Fromm, Krishnamurti, et al.), a "collective neurosis" (Fromm, Frankl, Bodamer, Meves, etc.), as the (generic) term in sociology goes; a mass trauma-consequence disorder of the non-material soul - not of the material "psyche", as psychiatry calls the object of its work. Unfortunately, most of those who know about (Collective) Neurosis are, for reasons of their own affliction/impairment, unable to recognise the true extent of the problem. The very few truthful descriptions / expertises were / are ignored, concealed, denied or the authors discredited for the same reason. The fear of truth is pathological (neurotic), but can - and must (for healing) - be overcome. Collective neuroses consist of the individual neuroses of the (majority of) members of the - respective, meant - collective. I understand neurosis primarily as the state between psychological injury / traumatisation and fundamental, natural, healing. In reality, neurosis is much more than the conspicuous symptoms described in some publications. The greater part of the symptoms "hides" in the - alleged, supposed - "normality" of civilised society. The disease itself "hides" in the unconscious of the afflicted. In the state of neurosis, the soul - which I see as a purely energetic (non-material, subtle) living being - is in a kind of "retreat / protective posture", whereby its performance potential for the material (gross material) aspect of the human being is only available to a limited extent. The power potential of the soul essentially comprises TWO components: 1.: (Universal) ENERGY (non-material, subtle, life-energy, power of love and peace, healing power, etc.) and 2.: (Universal) INFORMATION (intuitive insights, intuitions, hunches, divinations, guidance, etc.). If these components are lacking, no true life / being, no healthy development can take place - so that afflicted people also cannot truly (spiritually-soulfully) grow up. I see (collective) neurosis as the essential causal factor of all so-called "disorders" / "diseases" including the disturbance(s) of the capacities for true responsibility and real, human, relationships. Collective neuroses can escalate into "collective psychoses" such as war, civil war, uprisings, persecution, expulsion, terror(-ism), massacres, genocide, etc.. The outbreak of Collective Neurosis >17,000 years ago (in presumably a group of orphaned traumatised children) led to loss of culture and the division of the afflicted into mainly 2 symptomatic groups: About 1% rather psychopathic, aggressive "enslavers" / exploiters / tyrants and Approximately 99% rather fearful mental enslavers. With continued non-recognition / non-healing, the afflicted population is threatened with extinction. We find corresponding warnings in the literature. We have been experiencing this worst of all diseases for >17,000 years - and are faced with the challenge of finally recognising it collectively and treading the path of fundamental, natural, healing. This requires intensive truthful education - and with increasing urgency; for the disease is growing exponentially. Read more: www.seelen-oeffner.de/basis-info/ (www.Seelen-Oeffner.de )

I did a large part of my physics PhD researching whether microplastics from the ocean surface can transition into the atmosphere. The surprising answer is yes. A tiny fraction can, during waves, bubble bursts and raindrop impacts, get into the air, and possibly be transported across continents with the wind. Microplastics have extremely high mobility in the environment. They are impossible to remove from the environment in significant quantities. We have to close the tap, to reduce plastic pollution by behavioral change. And even that won't fix the existing pollution.

In my current preperations for my upcomming exams I learned about the biasis associated with maps. In your figure/map at 5:55 I would have appreciated the a visualistion of disribution of the 1000 stations recording the data. This came since I thought the number of monitoring stations seemed so small in contrast to the area covered by ocean. It would be intresting to see if the areas of relativ small numbers of plastics are due to lack of monitoring stations in the area. Cheers keep up your amazing work! Edit: Nice to see the increase of surveillance in the recommended solutions! PS: Binge watching all your videos in my study breaks, great content to turn my attention away from the topics of study for 10-15 minutes, but still learning about new and intesting topic in data science and analysis.

You addressed it in your pinned comment, but I feel like this gets glossed over so often it can't be a side-note: Asia being the top contributor to plastic waste is because: a) (as you pointed out) they receive quite a bit of plastic waste to "recycle" from the West b) their population size is massive with high density populations with poor waste management capabilities. thus, rather than looking at the overall percentage a "per capita" number would paint a clearer picture. c) most of manufacturing and a ton of food production has been offshored to the "East" besides that: fantastic video.

Asia is the top contributor because Phillipines exists and countries have huge population like India [1.4B], China [1.3B], Indonesia [273M], Pakistan [230M], Bangladesh [170M], Japan [125M] that's all.

It's also important to include the way different countries deal with the plastics. Most of them don't just throw it to the ocean, f. e. in India they literally burn it in small temperatures with no further adjustments. So the plastics don't end up in the ocean but much worse gases end up in the atmosphere.

Well in the 60' until 2000 a family usually recycled a lot more than now......for example water was kept in a glass, plastic bags were reused 5-6 times(in every house was a plastic bag full of other plastic bags that were being used a couple of times) .........also a big contribution can be traced to consumption of proccesed food

The one thing that needs to be considered in the idea of recycling plastic, as in melting down plastic to recreate it into something else, that I have heard is: 1) the quality of the plastic degrades when re-melted so making it into the same product it once was may involve more materials (possibly other raw ones not recycled), 2) the cost of the process since you need machines and manpower to divide and conquer, and 3) dividing the plastic types and being able to break them down to make a new product since there are different types produced with different chemicals mixed in. I have heard it is a more complex system and it takes time to research. Japan has some ideas such as recycling bottle caps into fuel/gas and reusing styrofoam, but even that is a lengthy and tedious process...we definitely need new innovations.

It looks like the simple answer is to replace the plastic used for Asian fishing equipment with something that fish can eat when broken down by the sun/water.

A thing to consider would also be, that we don't have to recreate the packaging of everything every time. Plastic is cheap to produce, yes, but it is also strong and long lasting.. Why not use it with these traits considered? For example, why does packaging for bottles and shampoo have to be recreated? Why can't we for example buy only the contents and not bring in the new packaging every time? That empty shampoo bottle can surely handle bunch more refills, that plastic bottle can hold the next cola you buy too.. It is important to not always put all your hopes just on science.. And don't get me wrong, I am a STEM person, I want to become an engineer, but I am also convinced that not all problems have to become the task on researchers and scientists to solve. The AdamSomething channel sums it quite well, we can't push the burden of our livestyles purely on scientific advancement. Although funnily enough, Climate Town then shows that these disposable livestyles that we have, are not just our fault, though I'll link that video here if anyone was interested: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gn6irJqme5a3Y8o.html

For those who believe , that "ocean clean Up" (and other Start ups.) whould solve this by collecting , realtive small amounts of plastic, sorting it Bringing it back to shore and recycling it ,making new plastic stuff, (Glasses etc...) Sorry! this is not the solution. Yes reusing plastic i good if it is collected in a energy effective way . "Ocen clean up" use supply ships with diesel enginens ,these kind of ships are not made for effective transportation of big volume, they can have a fue containers on board , or anchors . They are constructed for serving the of shore oil industry, whit primery , supply transports , and anchor handling , and security/rescue /fire fighting/tow / oilspill clean up ;services for the platforms. my solution would be 1.collecting at the source, by stopping plastic from land getting into the water in the first place . Where land fills are used (and cant be avoided) Make sure the landfill is secure From garbage being spread in the environment. 2.plastic products can be sold With extra fee that are given back to the buyer when the product has reached its,end of life via cash return systems. This is already done in many contrys . 3. All that goes out to sea from rivers is not bad. Non toxic Tree debris plants from different sources can actually serve as protection and biotopes to arciplagic fish etc. Therefore this type of debris should be allowed to remain in the sea , and not be be removed from rivers. 4.collect plastic on large scale in the sea in large vessels like big bulk ships( not small supply vessels) and probably burn the most of of it at sea , cleaning the exhaust from the garbage kiln. The ship could be using electric / hybrid drive propulsion (today diesel electric drive lines are standard in ice breakers for ex.) it not so hard to add a hydrogen fuel production and fuel cell system as a hybrid fuel source In a bigger ship. With cargo holds, there are space in the hull for this. Also the combustion power plant could be built in the holdes. The ship could produce hydrogen from the energy produced by burning waste, then producing electricity to run with the hydrogen. Yes it would produce co2 emmitons ,but burning fuel oil does that too... and the co2 could also be collected at the source/ shimny , and stored with (c)arbon (c)apture and (s)torage, If you have enough fuel (waste) to drive the ccs process. ccs Is actually a process that is fairly energy consuming.

There's a machine to transform plastic into Gasoline, relatively easy; we need more of these machines and we could have solved the problem. Also plant a lot more trees. Politicians are lazy: the People don't supervise them enough, and no consequences for them really; corrupt: robbing the Tax $, and favor the rich; so I don't think policy is working much, only at a bare minimum. Great video. Shared.

Very good video! However one point i think is very misleading is about how much each continent releases into the ocean. Asia releases 80% of plastic into the ocean, however USA and Canada literally pay asian countries to take their plastic and dispose of it, alot of it ending up in the ocean. So its very unfair and misleading to say that 80% of plastic is released into the ocean by Asia when most of USA, Canada and other western countries simply ship their plastic overseas instead of dealing with it themselves

this video is good news. actually. even if we take 10g of plastic per 10x10 meters it`s nothing. even if plastic dissolves for 500 years. we will get only 5kg within 500 years on 10x10 surface (and dont forget 3500 meters of depth). and then we start counting the dissolving.... plus 10g per year, minus 10g due to dissolving. thats it. 5kg of plastic per 350 000 cubic meters!!! thats 1 grain of salt in full glass of water.
