With Ciceroni we seek to be a guide to European culture and history. We make videos on little known subjects as well as more ubiquitous ones, ranging from current affairs like the European Union, to historic events like the Tulip Mania, and even mythological stories like those of the Greek Gods. In all these videos we strive to present the subjects in a objective manner and within their complex context.

A Christmas Carol is basically saying treat everyone how you would want to be treated even if others don’t… you treat people good/nice you’ll be fine & happy in life. But if you’re a douce to everyone well then things won’t go in your favor later on In life. “A Christmas Carol” is one of my favorite books/movie because even though it’s a fictional story it can have an impact on real life situations.

However, we are determined to pick up where we left off and hope to have something to show for it soon. :) As soon as we put out some more video's, we'd be very happy to hear your opinion on them! you seem to be interested in europe culture and tradition? if thats the case do you think it deserves to be preserved? do you also think that in order to preserve all the different unique european cultures, a country must keep its native population a 70%+ at least majority?

  • @divaythfyr5619

Egyptians and Syrians for example definitely couldnt preserve their old good culture btw. because the old population got replaced by invaders and also by different ideologies as well. I dont want to repeat the same mistake in europe.

We are very interested in European culture and the differences that we have throughout Europe that make it such a fascinating culture. Of course, we think the culture should be celebrated. However ‘Native’ and ‘preserved’ are quite vague terms in this case. The cultures of the European countries is the result of quite a lot of moving around of and cultural exchange between the different people from within and outside the continent. So it seems arbitrary to take today as the moment in time to stick with forever. For example, the people in Sicily have influences (genetic and cultural) from Italy, Greece, France, the Arab world, Spain etc. That diversity is what formed their unique culture.. We do see your point in Egypt and Syria where the culture, religion and language we know from history has all but disappeared and has been displaced by another. As for our take: Europe and it’s people should not be afraid to let people and ideas in and adopt/adapt (we’ve always done this). But we Europeans should also not be afraid to stand for what we believe is important to our culture. Things like democracy, the ideals of the enlightenment, our rich history etc should not be done away with out of a fear of being euro-centric. If ever Europe is under threat of invasion, we should absolutely protect all that it stands for. For now, let’s celebrate all that Europe is and has to offer and be open to the world, it has served us well so far. What do you think?

@@Ciceroni1 (Personal opinion) Saying that only factor in not helping Irish during famen is ignoring history of Irish and British relationship trueout history. Also, charity systems were enstablished exclusively to prevent working class from organising. And, Dickens maybe was a socialist (in most broad, idealistic sence), so Christmas Carol can be viewed as criticism of system as well. Not a bad or poorly researched video by any means, just way simplistic interpretation.

  • @Ciceroni1

You are right that Malthus’ theory was not the only reason for many politicians not to want to help in Ireland. However, they used the Malthusian argument to justify their stand point, that was surely based on colonialist and anti-Irish grounds. Of course. charities can be used to suppress popular uprisings, but i don’t think we can say that’s the only motive. Many people then, as today, partook in charity because they thought it was a moral obligation or because they thought it would score them points with their God. It’s interesting to see that you think we forgot the socialist/communist critique of the system, while other commenters seem to perceive the video as clearly socialist/communist. Everyone perceives it differently. For us the aim was to get people interested in the story behind the Christmas Carrol. Hopefully that has worked a bit. :)
