The Travelling Ring of The Wire Explained

Фильм және анимация

HBO's The Wire follows the drug trade of Baltimore, Maryland, from both the perspective of the cops and the criminals, following characters like Avon, Stringer, Burrell, Rawls, Royce, Marlo, and Prop Joe.
As fans of the show know, The Wire is incredibly detailed and always seems to contain something new you missed upon rewatches. I’ve covered many of the intricate and hidden details of the show on my channel, in both my normal videos and my shorts, so be sure to check them out and subscribe to the channel for more. Some of these details include the chess symbolism in the death of Bodie, the fact that the only cop to ever fire a gun in the show is Pryzbylewski, and that one of the dock workers from season 2, Johnny 50, is one of the homeless people in season 5.
Today I wanted to take a look at the travelling ring of season 4, the ring that travelled from from Andre, to Marlo, to Omar, to Officer Walker and finally to Michael.

    It's interesting to note that the opening for this season places heavy emphasis on circular imagery with the kid playing with the tyre, the merry go round, the tyre with drugs, marlo spinning the chrome wheel, Andre's spinning the circular screen behind his counter.... Even the ring itself is featured in the opening. Might be symbolic of the cyclical nature of the game, especially as the season focussed on the youth and how they end up becoming the adult characters we get to know

    Rewatching the Wire right now, and the opening of season 4 is the best it's been so far due to all those details. I also love how, in the beginning, we cut from either a lawyer outside a courthouse or a politician outside some government building carrying a briefcase (power) to Snoop putting the nailgun (that is in an orange briefcase) in the back of the car, to two policemen carrying their caps to the little hopper carrying a backpack of drugs. They are all carrying symbols of power, and most of them are in bags like briefcases and backpacks. It's just so nicely done. I did also notice the circular/spinning theme but didn't think it could be a symbol of the circular nature of the game until I read your comment. That's a great observation. Kudos.

    I think the least explored but most interesting and despicable group in The Wire are the politicians. For the most part, the political leaders of Baltimore essentially allow (if not promote) the street-level violence as a way to enhance their careers, building bonifieds with the electorate by talking tough and acting tough. The consequences are limited only to the drug dealers and their gangs while the politicians retain their power and increase the scope of their power on the backs of the rival, feuding drug gangs. Clay Davis and his ilk are likely the most successful players in "the game" but never fear ultimate retribution of death.

    Marlo takes the ring from Andre as payment for the package that was robbed from the store by Omar. It''s Marlo's way of saying that Andre is responsible for paying for the package regardless of whether or the package was stolen. Contrast that to how Cutty handles things when Fruit says that his package was robbed or how Naymond and then Michael handle things when Kennard says that his package was robbed. Contrast it also to how many times Omar robbed Barksdale stash houses - presumably Avon did not hold the stash house guards personally liable for the cost of the stolen drugs and maybe that's why it happend so often. Marlo's attitude is a combination of "fuck you, pay me anywaty and if you don't have cash, I'll take your jewelry instead" and "I've heard this excuse before;, I'm going to tax you for trying that shit with me"

  • @memphis6694

    @memphis6694

    Fruit and Kennard, they don’t say their package was robbed like the way Omar robbed Fat Face Andre. They say the Police came through and took it. I think that’s the difference, Marlo don’t care about Omar “He just another ninja with a gun” so he expects Andre to pay back what he owe. However if it was a raid, it might have been different, Marlo might have let it slide, lol maybe 😅.

    @@memphis6694 Ah yes, you're right. They both blamed it on police. Thanks. When I saw this scene, it reminded me of the Bamboo Lounge bust-out in Goodfellas where, once Paulie becomes a partner, his attitude is also "Fuck you, pay me my money"

    Frodo wears the ring around his neck just like michael. Neither michael nor frodo wants the power or to be in the situation they are in. The sequences of events surrounding the ring and the power it wields eventually change frodo, same as the game will eventually change michael.

    It's not a comment about the ring, but the dynamic here between Marlo and Michael makes me question whether the character of Marlo 'works.' Marlo is okay mentoring Michael to an extent but cannot trust him and puts a hit on his protege. Gotta wonder how Marlo can trust, or at a minimum show professional respect for Chris, who is 100X more deadly. If there's a scene anywhere in the show that hints on how Marlo got a soldier like Chris I can't remember it.

It shows to me how misguided all these so called gangsters are. They put worth and purpose on symbolic stuff and nothing is ever worthwhile at all. It’s like a game of fools where real lives are being lost on the dumb game. It’d be interesting to find out how much it’s really worth. Just to underscore the stupidity. These guys make all this money and instead of investing it they then put their lives on the line for a ring whose worth is unknown. Just because it looks nice.
