Some of us Americans have been hip to The Hip for 27 years. They are one of the greatest bands ever. From anywhere. They are one of the most important bands for me personally in my life. And I think at Large.. I was lucky enough to see them in Columbus Ohio at the Newport Music Hall with 800 other people who knew who they were. It was a big surprise to me. Because I never found anybody that knew who they were other than me. In fact there are several people in several states that listen to The Tragically Hip because they know me. And my three oldest children are all tragically hip fans. The final show from the tour last year after gourd announced that he had brain cancer. Was the single greatest rock show ever. Because they were brilliant and the emotion could not be calculated. Long Live The Tragically Hip Long Live Gord Downie!!

First time I’ve see this. I became a Hip fan after moving to northern NY in 1991. I’d hear them on the radio as I drove to/from work. Wondered who this band is putting out great music I had never heard. Saw them play quite a few times over the years; last time in 2015 in Buffalo. Tried to go to the last show in Kingston but couldn’t get tickets. It was so sad knowing I’d never see them play again. End of the Hip era.

New Orleans is Sinking: She loves me, she loves me not, she loves me, she loves me not... Alright Bourbon blues on the street Loose and complete under skies so smoky blue green I can't forsake a Dixie dead-shake So we danced the sidewalk clean My memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in? New Orleans is sinking man and I don't wanna swim Colonel Tom, what's wrong? what's going on? Can tie yourself up for a deal ? He said, "Hey north you're south, shut your big mouth You gotta do what you feel is real" Ain't got no picture postcards, ain't got no souvenirs My baby, she don't know me when I'm thinking bout those years Music break Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire Sucking up to someone just to stoke the fire Picking out the highlights of the scenery Saw a little cloud that looked a little like me I had my hands in the river, my feet back up on the banks Looked up to the Lord above and said, "Hey, man thanks" Sometimes I feel so good, I gotta scream She said, "Gordie baby, I know exactly what you mean" She said, she said, I swear to God she said Ahhhhhhhhh nooooooooo, noooooooo, yeah ! The Hip, historically speaking, were one of the great supporters of everything Canada. Also, a great band that evolved so well over the years and produced some great records. The band wrote the music in a collective manner; there was no single or dual writers like you see in most bands. Maybe one of the least pretencious bands you ever saw in interviews. Gord was so comfortable in his own skin, just being himself. This band could rock with the best of them- RIP Gord; condolences to your family and friends.

@@edwardcharles990 Fiddler's Green: One, two, three, four, one, two September seventeen For a girl I know it's Mother's Day Her son has gone alee -ee And that's where he will stay Wind on the weathervane Is tearing blue eyes sailor-mean As Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain For a boy in Fiddler's Green His tiny knotted heart Well, I guess it never worked too good The timber tore apart And the water gorged the wood You can hear her whispered prayer For men at masts that always lean The same wind that moves her hair Moves her boy through Fiddler's Green Oh, nothing's changed anyway Oh, nothing's changed anyway Oh, anytime today He doesn't know a soul There's nowhere that he's really been But he won't travel long alone No, not in Fiddler's Green Balloons all filled with rain As children's eyes turn sleepy-mean And Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain For a boy in Fiddler's Green

My memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in? New Orleans is sinking man and I don't wanna swim SWIM!

Same here. Became a fan at Road Apples. Saw many shows when they came down the East Coast. Ended too soon.
Oh wow, this is a real gem!!!
I'm not gonna watch this all the way through because I know it will just make me horrendously sad, not just about Gord but about how much of the Canadian culture that old MuchMusic represented has just ceased to exist over the last decade. But thanks for uploading. :(

That is so true, you have made a very good point. Much Music had so many great shows that highlighted Canadian music to the entire country and was completely different and separate from the CBC. Also, their coverage of music events (Canada Day festivals etc.) was awesome.

So many memories
The Hip are simply the best...
I haven’t seen this episode since it first aired. Thank you for uploading this. I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole this afternoon of Gord Downie/Hip YT videos this afternoon, since I saw on twitter a couple of hours ago that The Hip is releasing Saskadelphia tomorrow. (21 May 2021) So. ... Many. .. Emotions.
thanks for this upload! i saw it in 1996 ... since them I'm looking for it! Gord pass away took me here. Rest In Peace Dear Gord!
Loved them since i first heard them in '90 back in Buffalo. Too bad Mtv and busine$$ blocked them from being more popular in the US. Buffalo certainly loved them!!!!! If radio stations weren't bought out they would have exploded. Media is bought out.
#1 American fan
Thanks so much for putting this where we could watch it. Thank you.
Speechless. For once in my life
Rest in peace, Gord. We love you soo much
Wonderful!
awesome so glad that I watched it. Going to miss Gordie
Gord, why’d you have to go? 💔🤟
I miss MuchMusic. Don’t even know what it is now. Crap I guess.
RIP Gorgo. Absolute gem.
Great man in his Prime
Sweet throwback Much production. Thanks for putting this up!
Great band. Paul Langouis is coming to Peterborough this month.
This is perfection, thanks so much for uploading this. July 25 1996 sounds dead on. Great memories.
Gord wrote songs that struck a nerve with us Crazy Canucks. Bill Barilko , Nautical Disaster , David Milgard etc 🇨🇦🏒
Wow! Thank you for the extremely cool and deeply felt trip down memory lane I’ve taken in awhile.🎶🇨🇦✌️
Thank you for uploading this.
Most entertaining band ever! God bless them all!
Gord was just SO FUCKING COOL, I would be proud to call him my friend. Sad for my Canadian neighbors. 🇨🇦 Irreplaceable hit to the genuine music left in this autotune shit world. Just sad, Crushed actually.
Thank you for uploading this!
Thank you so much for this.
Thanks for posting this
I dont believe in ppl being born because but when its comes to Mr. Downie I put him on the top shelf with Bon Scott ?? Why ??.. Just a good person as a whole not certain parts a complete package and he was BORN to be a front man and a lyrical genius that told stories..they weren't just lyrics in a song.. Locked in the trunk of a car..SERIOUS The DARKEST badass shit you will hear..
I’m a rebel... without a clue.
|Unbelievably Canadian. Thank Ya!
Perfect!!!!!
I didn't realize Gord was so vocally obtuse about the lyrics in interviews. Despite the clips shown here, there is a definite person and subject being referenced. Gord and I both knew him.

"He was a coal miner in the spring." The idea that that isn't about an actual person. Why do you listen to pop music if you think it's just entirety random?
How the hell did you find this? Good work! Nice to be reminded of what MuchMusic was like in the mid 90s
