The Tragic Story Behind The REAL Family Who Inspired Beauty and The Beast!

In 1740, a woman named Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve wrote a tale titled “La Belle et la Bete,” which translates to “The Beauty and the Beast.” But what a lot of people don’t know is how she came up with the fairytale that inspired the Disney films that we all know and love today. It is said that she based her story on a real-life person named Petrus Gonsalvus and the woman he was betrothed to, Catherine. Today we are going to be telling you guys the real story behind the man that they based the Beast off of in the original fairy tale. And just a heads up, this story has a really sad ending after you learn about what happened to Petrus’s children...

    This is sad. I hope the children received some kindness, even if people saw them as curiosities and proof of nobility. I'm actually quite impressed at king Henry for his beautiful display of kindness.

    I realize they had a medical condition, but did razors not exist back then? It would have been difficult to shave certain places, sure. But people have done more desperate acts for less valuable reasons and felt it was worth it. For proof of this, look no further than your average supermodel.

    It just shows me that nothing has changed.. people still judge by other people's looks.. Disney should have done a dedication to this man and his family because it sounds like they all went through a living hell. It's such a shame though that people treated them so badly! This is truly the most incredible true love story I ever heard. I suffered serious persecution in the past because I was also different (not physical) when I was a kid. Eventhough Im still single at this point before I meet my future love one day, Im so happy this man full of hairs lived to have a family of his own. A truly beautiful love story.

    Hey look on the one with beast and enchantress is cip's parents. I wrote this story down, like how the queen force her girl in waiting to marry a man with werewolf syndrome ( bell and beast) and have kids. And they have the disease sell them as pets ( I don't know what they did with the normal kids). Gaston was base of the girl's lover and she had stockhome syndrome from living with the beast too long. But they did live happily ever after and died as a free couple and like few days apart.

    Petrus only partly inspired original tale... core message wasn't 'beauty is found within' but to teach young children of arranged marriage with a partner from upper class they never met. Tale literally says how Belle (who was way more passive in the writing) was so impressed with magical rooms, dresses, food, parrots, monkeys - which in turn shows off HOW SHE WAS IMPRESSED WITH HIS WEALTH - complete opposite of Disney & other variations we got in 20th century (tale wouldn't work if he was poor we know it very well) So eventually, after spending time with your 'arranged rich partners' - you will overcome your fears of them, and eventually you will realize they are noble & kind within... Its sooo soooo freaking sad that no one mentions that original message in any of 'BatB background' videos PS how the hell 1991 Belle has Stockholm Syndrome?!?! SHE STAYED AT THE CASTLE BY HER OWN CHOICE, she wasn't kidnapped!!! Plus when Beast let her go TWICE, both times SHE RETURNED BY HER OWN WILL!

  • @yuukinoyuki9064

    I agree with most of your points except the comment on Stockhold syndrome. Belle didn't "choose" to stay with Beast at first. She was coerced into staying with him in order to free her father. Had the Beast said, the first time they met, "I'll release your father and you can both go. Or you can stay here and live in luxury" Belle would have left with her father. It's only after spending time with the Beast in a situation she couldn't leave (until he gave her permission) that she started to sympathize with him. Sympathizing with the person who held you captive is textbook Stockholm syndrome. The syndrome also doesn't end when captivity does. Beast allowed Belle to leave (and she did) just like the Bank robbers in Stockholm eventually allowed their hostages to leave. But said hostages still felt sympathy for the robbers even after leaving and that sympathy is what coined the term "Stockholm syndrome."

  • @Floweramon

    @Floweramon

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@yuukinoyuki9064 But she did try to leave, and the only reason she came back was because he saved her. Even then, after he passes out you can see her turn away as if to leave before changing her mind. She was fully prepared to leave and break the promise. Also on a side note, the original case of "Stockholm Syndrome" that you described is actually more complicated and was coined because the women were critical of the police putting hostages' lives in danger during the situation, so they just dismissed those criticisms by saying they felt sorry for their captors.

  • @NenadlPopovic

    @@yuukinoyuki9064 Father made mistake, she took his place - but Beast already felt sorry when they 1st met for setting them in such situation. He DID let her go way before ballroom, in the West Wing argue, he told her to run away. She was attacked by wolves, HE SAVED HER & PHILIPPE LIVES, SHE STILL WANTED TO LEAVE - but she decided to return & help - by this point it wasn't just 'sympathy for the monster' - she also made friends with Enchanted Objects. But after spending time together & solving the puzzle (after all it was story of forgiving & change for the better) she realized she cares for him. Another thing most BatB critics ignore is that Adam was a jerk before the curse, but even after it, he didn't have any contact with human beings for 10+ years... Im not saying thats 'good excuse' but it tells us a lot about his childish & overdramatic reactions. Again, D two main messages were 'beauty is found within' & 'change for the better self' - which they HANDLED PERFECTLY WITH 1991 FILM 😍

    @@Ikajo so you are bassicly saying: if a person is in debt to someone (she switched place with her father, so its her debt now), and that someone ALSO SAVES YOUR LIFE, its S Syndrome?!? You owe 10 000 dollars to the bank, in exchange banker takes you to work for him. Banker saves your life. You should be grateful. One thing people constanly forget is that Maurice & Belle were IN DEBT (whether for a rose, sneaking in his property, or simply bcuz Maurice took loan from Prince long ago (depends on variation)) So you can't feel sorry for them being in dungeon, yet you forget that Maurice entered his house, ate food, got clothes, treasure etc & eventually picked (-stole-) a rose from the garden. Belle was repaying her 'father crime'... simply as it is

    It is so sad that petro and his family went through that first off to be caged as a child is inhumane no matter what you look like okay second off to be forced into a marriage I mean I get it they ended up falling in love and actually being in love with each other which is totally awesome but to be forced into a marriage just because you're covered in extra hair I can't imagine how he must have felt they're people out there still afflicted with this genetic disease and if I saw anybody mistreating them or talking down to them I'd go off there's no point in putting people down because there's something that they're born with it's like somebody putting me down because I was born with her heart murmur nothing I can control it's just how life is you get thrown a curveball you have to live with it and for people to put you down for it is ridiculous it is just utterly ridiculous and unacceptable and I know that back then it was a different time and you know different beliefs and all that but you know I learned not too long ago that there used to be belief that if you had moles or any imperfection on you there was something wrong with you it's just ridiculous and I am saddened by the fact that even in our past as human beings we would have ever been like that

    The fairy tale story that is considered to be the origin of Beauty and the Beast is Cupid and Psyche. In both stories, a young beautiful young woman finds her way to an enchanted palace where she falls in love with a monstrous boyfriend in disguise but she eventually ends up searching for her lost boyfriend. However, the story had a long way to go before it ended up in France and Madame d'Villeneuve wrote her romantic YA-novel "La Belle et la Bête" (published in 1740 in "La jeune américaine, et les Contes Marins" for young women on a voyage to America). However, the fairy tales about the prince or princess who is disguised as an animal has a long history in Europe, as evidenced by its widespread distribution and variations in different countries. For example, the story "The Pig King" (Il re Porco) by the Italian author Statparola, "Prince Marcassin" (Le Prince Marcassin) by the French author Madame d'Aulnoy, "Donkeyskin" (Peau d'Âne) by the French author Charles Perrault, and "East of the Sun and West of the Moon" (Østenfor sol og vestenfor måne) by the Norwegian authors Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe are very similar to Beauty and the Beast.

Those children and Pedro himself more then likely ended up living a more privileged life then most peasants, in many ways, because of their condition. They most certainly lived much better lives then they would have had they not been viewed as status symbols.

    Even if shaving had as easy as it is now, as someone who has more body hair than normal bc of a hormonal condition, I can attest to the fact that there was also the high probability that they'd need to shave literally every single day. Hair growth conditions like that tend to accelerate regrowth. I know so because *I* have to shave every day.
