Creating the sixth Queens of the Stone Age record would be anything but easy. Following 2007’s Era Vulgaris, mastermind Josh Homme would take a six year break from the band -- producing the Arctic Monkeys’ third record (Humbug), playing in other bands like Eagles of Death Metal and Them Crooked Vultures, while also welcoming his second child. But in the fall of 2010, after developing an antibiotic-resistant staph infection, Homme was hospitalized for nearly two weeks. Then bedridden for a handful of months. Leaving the frontman to sink into a deep depression.
The singer and guitarist would later tell journalists that his heart had actually stopped during the surgery meant to rid his infection and that even after he was revived, he felt like a part of him had been left behind on the operating table. Lost and out of love with music, the turbulent process of assembling ...Like Clockwork would lead to quite possibly their best record yet, helping redefine the band’s signature style while documenting Homme’s personal journey of moving forward. Let’s explore The Tragedy Behind ...LIKE CLOCKWORK

Before you say I missed "I Sat By The Ocean" -- it didn't really contribute to the narrative but it does have an excellent hook and melody with some pretty cool harmonized guitars. It features some staple QOTSA lyricism: macho but emotional. What's your favourite track off ...Like Clockwork? And why is it "I Appear Missing"?

Honestly, probably the title track. While it’s true that it’s the least QOTSA-sounding song, it had so much impact on me when i listened to the album in order for the first time. With the proper context the song feels so raw and almost confessional like Homme’s done hiding behind his masculinity in songs like Smooth Sailing and I Sat By The Ocean.

In December of 2015 I had a really bad accident on my high school swim team in which I broke my neck, drowned to death, got resuscitated, went to the icu for two weeks and ended up having to learn how to live life with a spinal chord injury. All this to say that I Appear Missing is not just representative of Josh Homme’s death experience but as a whole it captures the surreal feel of learning to appreciate life. This album is one of my favorites but specifically I Appear Missing for that reason. This album to me is about growth in every sense of the word. I was agreeing with you until you added that last nasty bit. I couldn't disagree more - Lullaby is awesome!
I actually wrote a major research paper on this album my freshman year of high school. The prompt was to write about something that was under/over-appreciated. I wrote about how - at the time of the release of "...Like Clockwork"- Queens of the Stone Age were criminally under-appreciated band. While diving into the lyrics for this album and for this paper, I soon uncovered the awful things that Josh Homme went through. Absolutely nobody should have to go through what he did, but the fact that Josh came out of all of it with an album that was still relatable is beyond me. This was my favorite QOTSA album before I started doing research for that paper, and it is still my favorite. The opportunity to really understand where these fantastic songs came from only deepened the experience of, and my love for this album. PS - my favorite song is Kalopsia - Alex Turner contributed on the lyrics, and the way Josh belts out "I love you more than I can control" gets me every time
Rated R is what made me a QOTSA fanatic but Clockwork is their most musically beautiful and diverse album and once you learn the backstory behind its conceptualization it makes it that much more amazing.

CONGRATS ON 500K!!!
Your videos are amazing mate. Congrats. Top work.
Yeeeees. I swear, your music tastes are the best!
Still think lullabies to paralyse is an underrated classic, so many great tracks, in the wolf, burn the witch.... Sound so different and fresh

Agreed. Definitely my favourite QOTSA album
You make the best QOTSA related content on this site man. I'd love videos on the early records or their more mixed bag records like Vulgaris and Villains, talking about what goes right and what goes wrong
I didn't knew I needed this video until I watched it! ...like clockwork was really precious to me when it came out, so this fills the gap on why and when I hear it. Thank you!
I think that Era is hard to listen and understand but once you go through some nasty and weird moments in your life, you are able to catch the sound and feel that twisted feeling it has.
QotSA might not have made every track a radio hit... And you might not like every track... But they never fail to kill it. And they step it up every album.
man if only the other presentations i watched for online class were like yours
Love the production and style of this video.
My personal favorite from QOTSA
Maaan. I know Nick made mistakes, but I can't help but think how much better this album would have been with him on it. The records he played on are something special.
Great story and brilliant motion graphics work! Nice one guys 🤌🔥
This is a great album. Thanks for the history lesson. Really enjoyed the video. Well done!
Holy crap, I couldn't click fast enough! Been waiting since Songs for the Deaf for a ...Like Clockwork video!
Era Vulgaris may be their "worst" album, but goddamn "Make it with chu" is one of the sexiest songs ever made.

“Worst” being good. They’re such a solid band that even their worst albums have great moments

With a very strong discography like QOTSA's, Era Vulgaris being the weakest still means it's a good album. I enjoy that one from start to finish.

It's not bad by any means. I personally like it a lot and I don't see why Lullabies or Villains should be ranked any higher.

Villains is their weakest imo
My God. Gave me a whole new look on the album. Thank you so much!
I Always enjoy a well edited and great middle 8 video! 👍
People are wrong about Era it’s amazing and one of their best
I would love to see you make a video about Peach Pit.

And how he lip syncs his own shows because he can't reproduce his falsetto live

Wait I'm thinking Passion Pit** my bad lmfao. Comment still stands regarding Passion Pit
Amazing video! The typography and motion are top-notch. And oh yeah, are you still interested in making that video about Phoebe Bridgers? I would love that.
The art/animation on this video is amazing.
