that would just make trying to get a piece under another piece harder and more irratating, and considering how this puzzle is pretty heavy on trial and error having the magnets will just make the solving process more tedious
I love this puzzle. Having an upper and lower path adds to how many solutions you can have without being overwhelming. Very fun and cool.
I think that, by measuring how many "holes" the meters are long, you can know how many times it needs to overlap, by subtracting the length in "holes" of the rulers from the board area in holes. In this case 52 - 42 = 10 overlaps

There is a class of digital puzzle games known as "line puzzles" or "line art puzzles" that follow a very similar concept. I have one on my phone that's called "Flow Free" and the goal is to cover every space on a grid with differently colored lines. The trick is, the lines have to connect between two points that are predetermined on the grid and they can't cross each other (which are the only real main differences from this one) but the thought processes you used to solve this are almost identical to the thought processes I use to solve the different boards in Flow Free. In particular, when I have an empty corner or empty space in an awkward looking location, I know one or more of my lines isn't stretching where it's/they're supposed to be. Having the freedom (and necessity) to be able to cross the lines with this one with two layers definitely increases the difficulty of this type of puzzle, as when all of the lines are on one plane it's far easier to visualize where each line is supposed to twist and bend around the others. Then again, the board in Flow Free have grids that go up to 15x15 lines and I've seen them have 14 colors on a single board - I can't imagine how insanely complicated those boards would be if I had to layer the lines like this puzzle...
You know, this channel is great for people who like puzzles, but are crap at solving them themselves - like me!
finally a you tuber who hypnotizes you to make sure you watch his content
At around 4:30, I saw the '3rd option' to this puzzle (rotate either the 1piece or the 4piece 180degrees around the longest piece) and instantly figured that doing so would lead to the solution. It seemed like the right leap of logic, based on how these puzzles tend to go. So I opened an Excel doc and plotted out where everything else would go, and got the solution pretty quickly. My solution was mirrored vertically from yours. at 6:15 you actually got most of the angles right for the first measure. From '15' down to '1' was laid out correctly, it just needed to be rotated 90 degrees, moved to the right spot, and then had the longer piece fit in over the top. You actually made the leap of logic at 7:24 during a jump cut. Kinda upset you left that very important move out of the video.
Puzzle Guy has also solved this puzzle a long time ago. I just checked his solution. It is the mirror opposite of Mr Puzzle's solution.

this looks like a very cool packing puzzle! nice! thanks for sharing!
I would calculate the number of spaces first. Some points wouldn't have 2 layers. From the board (7×6) and the pieces (counting both layer, 73 "squares" in total), we can know that there would be 11 points with only one layer. This would help the "trial and error" because if there are more than 11 inaccessible slots, then it's not part of the correct answer.

Should’ve called it desperate measures
I have found three solves.
If you could place them diagonal it would only be one way to do it. The one with the measurements 16 to 21 would fit perfectly into two holes because of the Pythagorean theorem. 3^2+4^2=5^2
Thank You

Got it also here. Will try! 😁
A general thought about this kind of challenge: things are much easier for today's puzzlers who have access to mobile phones and digital photography. When working on a solution you can take pictures (or even video) before you start, and then dozens of photos as you try different combinations. With no need for paper and a pencil, it feels a bit like cheating... ;-) In the old days, taking pictures with a film-camera meant waiting a week for the stuff (all blurred and too dark or too bright and useless) to come back from the developer. Annoying, slow, and really expensive. Incidentally, taking instant digital pictures is also a great help when stripping down things like car gearboxes and wiring looms, which can also be quite puzzling to put back together.

I liked your logice in the start.
The code is number of holes taken on base and up/down. easy to create a program to solve.

there was a youtuber called fleb who did this i think. he was how i found this channel through the recommendation chain.
Damn...somehow u solved it like no problem at all...
That looks incredibly frustrating to manipulate.
It's not my favorite type of puzzle but the design is very clever and different and I appreciate that. Though it feels like part of the difficulty is just manipulating the pieces at all -- from here it appears really fiddly, and not in a tactiley satisfying way.
I like this typo of puzzle - even if I see the solution I will not remember it

@@jimstennett8017 - Well, no, I didn’t say any of that. You’re reading a lot into my comment that just isn’t there. It does raise an interesting point, though. "I don't know if there are multiple solutions"...there at least two, cuz you can turn it around
I don't think the solve was correct. I'm pretty sure you need to start the second one where the first one ends off so after 27" at the end of first one then 28" is next to it on the start of the 2nd piece, so it is like one big long measuring tape. You have 27 in the bottom left, then you have 28 in the 2nd row down and 2nd column.
Sorry but it seems rather random, both the puzzle and the way to solve it, using trial and error. and dare I say, a bit boring to observe, I have seen some solved on this channel using an analytic approach, or deduction and those must be much more satisfying to solve. Or perhaps Satisficing
