The Total or (Totality) function in Tableau & Partitions

The total function in Tableau takes whatever expression you give it and computes it for the whole data set in your partition, i.e. the totality of the data set. It's not to be confused with totalling up your data or summing up your values. Dive into this video to find out more about partitions and the function itself.

    even right clicking the avg of furniture at year and looking at the data pane, will show all the individual rows that make up that value. a good way to tell whats contributing to the value. nice video

    Hey Tim, Thank for the daily videos. Really helpful and loved the way you explain. One suggestion : You're making videos for new version release as separate videos that's good. Also expecting all the new version updates in a single video in brief would be more helpful as well. Hope you will do it 🙏

    Thanks for the feedback really appreciate it. I have done this before over at the information lab channel. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e5doj8NvmrbKYag.html it takes alot of work though and I just became a dad recently so haven't been able to do them for 2020.3 and 2020.4 but this year my workflows alot better so will maybe go back and do them or do them going forward. Tableau also have one here www.tableau.com/learn/webinars/whats-new-tableau-2020-4 for 2020.4.

    @@TableauTim I have values -77 and 96767 when I do a Column Grand Total I got only 96690 but I want to add the 77 instead of automatically subtract. So the result should be 96844. I tried ABS function but it works when i used on the column level, but when I do analysis--> show column grand totals it subtract the 77 instead of adding 77 to the total. Please advise how can I get the total 96844 instead of 96690. Thank you.

    Hi Tim nice video, I got a question Im hoping you can help with, you mention that the Total function cant show an average of the total furniture only because its calculating the entire data and I got it but... thats exactly what I need :) I need to show the total average of each Pane in the table, for examle in this video the average for Forniture should show 466 in forniture total Pane. If you have a video explaning this can you send me the link ? if you dont have a video Ill be waiting for one. Thanks again for these videos.

    You got a timestamp for the bit your referring to in the video? I think you need to use an LOD ( Level of detail calculation) I have a 5 video series on it. kzread.info/head/PLRfaJ7ZL0cF6tKISv9AABedMFcQ3IgbJd but before I send you to that just want to be sure ive got the question understood. Let me know

    Hi, I need some advice. If there is a category under that there is a lot sub-category. In the worksheet I have category- sub-category and exact date (Discrete) data from 2021 to 2023. How to calculate running totals of each sub-category separately till today.

    Hi Tim, do you have any solution for rolling dates and count distinct? Like amount of customers Jan - Mar, Feb - Apr,... It means overlapping partitions. Is it also possible to work with "total" or any other suggestion? I tried with window_sum -2,0 but it counts customers twice if a customer buy in January and in February. Thank you

  • @TableauTim

    @TableauTim

    2 жыл бұрын

    That would be a conditional caclculation rather than a window calc. So you create a measure for jan to March and feb to April. In each you write a condition filtering the date periods. You can then drop both into the sheet and compare the values.

    @@TableauTim thanks for your response! But I would like to create a line diagram with rolling date, so I would need one field,but it is not possible to use if sentence with Jan to March and Feb to april (not only these to dates, it was just a sample, it should be rolling measure 3 month) or do you see any solution?

    Forget total for 2 seconds. Watch some videos on table calculations to learn how they work. Then come back and watch this…. Think of it as a way to preserve the table calculation inside a variable so you can further manipulate it before using it.
