Aggregations can be difficult to understand. I find the ATTR (attribute) aggregation the hardest to get my head around in Tableau.
In this video, I teach you:
1. What an attribute is
2. Why the attribute aggregation exists
3. Examples that show how it works
4. The difference between ATTR and other aggregations like MIN & MAX
5. How Tableau write the ATTR aggregation as a formula
6. How to ensure you're not misleading your audience
7. How to work around the pesky *

##not simple at all
Thank you very much Andy! You make it is so easy to understand and communicate what the ATTR is.
This is great Andy! Love your content brother, thanks for always keeping it fresh!
Wow that was one of the best tableau vids I have seen. The examples are easy to follow and you explained it in such a way a beginner like myself could understand. Thanks!

Great! Thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for publishing this (and so much other content!) Andy. With Tableau, I find a lot of people (experts) skip over explaining the nuts-and-bolt essentials, but those are the bits on which *everyone's* understanding is ultimately built.

@@vizwiz Yes! The concrete examples made it very tangible. Having access to the data (or workbook) would make it better still, as I was itching to try it out in 'Bleau. (Please see my recent comment to that effect.)
Nicely explained @Andy Kriebel ! I too practiced ATTR in last 2 weeks and was able to understand where and how to use it. Your video helped to get my concepts cleared , THANKS!!! It will be good if you put some video on handling cannot compare aggregate and non aggregate functions tableau and similar types of issues. Not sure if you already explained it in any video , I am yet to complete your entire play list :)

Thanks Andy, one question - When we use exclude LOD, why does Tableau uses the ATTR function?
@vizwiz
Жыл бұрын
Good question, I’m not sure. But you can change the default aggregation if you find it confusing. I never, ever use and Exclude LOD anyway.
Great
Thanks! I did learn sth!
Sir i have created a calculated field it is working when I am filtering one dimensional value but when I am filtering two or more it is showing star.. How would I be able to break the star so that i can show the sum of those two dimensional value..
A couple of questions, if I may. Is there an easy way to get rid of the "Abc" that Tableau (infuriatingly!) insists on adding to crosstabs, as seen at 2:48? (Do you have any idea what the supposed benefit of that is?) And is there a public copy of the sample employee data (or the workbook) you use? (I'd love to follow along.) Thanks!
@vizwiz

Tableau includes the ABC to show you where data exists. You can always make the font white. 😊 As for the data for this example, you can find it here. drive.google.com/file/d/1pQsxgPNd4QOEiV7X3iX7xRaWPJPMcI5A/view?usp=drivesdk

A calculation with the combination of “Rank ascending or rank descending” will work
how can we use ATTR() in Calculations and what would be the case? Can you please explain with an example?

I went through several examples in the video. What use case did I not cover?
Something I have been wondering - is there a way for us to aggregate the attributes by comma separate all relevant field values. Not sure if someone has a solution here.

@@vizwiz Thank you for the reply. So let's say we have salary $50000 for both John and Jenny. Is there a way for me to show them in one row such that "John, Jenny" (instead of simply "*")?

@@vizwiz just one suggestion if u can explain ATTR with LOD that will be a great help. for ex:- CAL: {EXCLUDE [City]: SUM([Sales])} why it's became ATTR(CAL)

I’m not sure. I would just change the default aggregate to whatever you want it to be.
@petterbohman8468

Tanks for very clear explanation video. But the final example (6:09) is a bit misleading for me. The scatter plot level of detail doesn’t make sense to me. Why would you aggregate everyone that are on the same salary to one point in the chart? The solution for me is not to add attr(Name) to the Tooltip shelf, but rather ‘Name’ as a dimension to the Detail shelf.
Everything is great, but just slow down the speed of speaking. When trying to understand some new concept such a quick speaking is a little annoying. I have tried to adjust the speed of speaking to 0.75 in KZread, but it gets too slow and annoying as well.

I do my best to accommodate everyone with the free videos I produce. Some say it's too fast, some say it's too slow. Those that have said it's too fast in the past will pause along the way to follow along.

To pause (or resume playback), you can simply press Space. So if you'd like a moment to absorb something that's just been said (or to try it out in Tableau), just press Space. Then press it again when you're ready to carry on. Simple!
