What is the Window function in Tableau? Part1 Tableau Functions

#tableau The window modifier is used commonly in Tableau to calculate totals, moving averages and sums and a range of other use cases. In this video, I walk through how windows work in Tableau in this first part of the explainer.
The window is defined as offsets from the current row. Use FIRST()+n and LAST()-n for offsets from the first or last row in the partition. If start and end are omitted, the entire partition is used. Share feedback and Suggestions: tableautim.canny.io/suggestions -

    For Part 2, I'd love to see how to user the Window function to create a bar chart that shows sales per month for a selected year but has a reference line which shows the average sales per month across multiple years. This would allow the user to see, for example, how sales for January 2022 compares to average sales for January from 2017 to 2022.

    No windows would have to copy Mac OS and not sure that’s happening anytime soon. It’s not a Tableau thing that can be implemented by them. Macs have this feature enabled for all software.

    I am preparing for the Data Analyst cert. and I can anticipate them just showing me a formula and asking for the expected value. It is one thing if you have the tool open and can play around, but another when you have to calc this in your head. OK maybe if the examples are as simple as shown here, but I suspect the worst of the Tableau test writers. Do you have any guidance regarding the level of familiarity one needs with WINDOW to sit this exam? I suppose that advocates of Tableau would champion this as being flexible, but to me this is not user friendly and is confusing. That said, your explanation is solid - thank you TT.

  • @TableauTim

    @TableauTim

    3 ай бұрын

    No the exam isn’t hardcore like that. You just really need context of what the calculation does. The answers will have obvious correct and wrong ones so if you get how the function works usually that’s enough to decipher the answer. Also knowing what’s wrong matters just as much.

  • @TableauTim
