On our recent trip to the coast, I was reflecting on some of the reasons we enjoy living in Croatia. Many people are confused about why we live here, and not in Canada, so here are just a few things I thought of to explain why.

I emigrated to Canada as a child in late 1960’s, came to GTA (suburb of Toronto) with parents for a better life. Back than Yugoslavia’s regime did not offer a good future for us. I am grateful to God for this opportunity and for Canada. I also finally meet my grandparents who moved to Canada even decades earlier for political (survival) and economic reasons. But things seem to be changing. For me personally, Canada is like a work camp and I agree with ‘your’ perspective. When I visit my relatives in Croatia now, I must admit that they NOW seem to have a better lifestyle. Things have changed, so I agree with you Sara! God willing, when I retire, I plan to visit ever year for extended periods. With adult children (around you age :) here in Canada, unfortunately that part will get complicated. Like the Israelites returning back to homeland, it’s time for Croatian’s to do same. Hey Sara, you seem beautiful inside and out. Neka te dragi Bog blagoslovi!

Everyone who ever traveled outside of Croatia to a bigger country/city can understand what you are talking about. I believe that our people are complaining mostly bcs they didn't travel even inside the borders of our country and even less outside of it, so they can't see the difference in quality of life and that's why they often don't appreciate it. And it's not that they don't want to travel, but they can't afford it. We have a gorgeous nature, cilmate etc. and live mostly off of tourism that during the corona lockdown was visible as a negative side bcs our country depends on importing goods instead of growing the local industry. Croatia has sold most all of it and people are mad because of it. Let's just hope that in future we will improve. I wanted to add that in Zagreb people travel longer distances to work by car, but in smaller cities we often can go by foot for few minutes or 10 min by car and I'm very grateful for it.

Life here is way too chaotic and people seem to focus so much of their energy on how much more money they can make, how much bigger house they can buy, the new fancier car or some other toy they can get...It feels like it lacks culture and unity so everything becomes about consumerism and not much else. It's probably why mental health is going downhill here as people become more like robots. But anyways, nice video.

I think your reasons for living in Croatia are excellent. I think Croatians in general can be a bit pessimistic about things and how amazing Croatia is and how lucky they are to be there. Of course the economics of living there for many people is hard and they choose to leave Croatia but "money isn't everything".

J J - we are not pesimistic, I would say that we are overly positive about everything... One thing is to live here year long and another one is to come here for a vacation from for example. USA, GB or some other higher standard country. In two weeks where you have fun and spend money wherever you want, you can't really determine how we live and what's the status of the country. Come here and stay for a while - most of people work for around 600-700$ and let's say that prices of everything is same as in your country (gas more expensive then in USA, food more expensive then in Germany etc..) - you would not have a good time here with that amount of money each month. We are 2nd/3rd poorest country in the EU (Romania is currently growing more then us... Only Bulgaria left behind) - maybe it looks fun how everyone is in good mood and they all sit outside and drink coffee, drive "nice" cars... Most of that is based on loans people can't pay and people live way above their salary and standard ( I guess that's like in every country)... But well, this ain't the real reason why you would run from here, we can all get over this things... Real reason is the corruption, politicians and all that stuff. This country is incredibly corrupted, we have scandals every day in the news and it's really sad knowing that you live in a country where the one next to you is just looking for profit and how to rip you off. Yes we have "nice views" on the sea... but that is there for 4-5 months a year, other half of the year is pretty bad to live there. Please, go to Podravina and Slavonija, drive around there - there's no people left there, villages are empty, people left because there is nothing there for them anymore. All the factories / jobs are closed, nobody gives a damn about those people. It's like war happened there yesterday, you will be really sad after you see that.

Hi Sarah! I've been following your and Ivan's story for quite some time now and I find your view of Croatia and the lifestyle here so refreshing and joyfull. See, I'm one of those Croatian that tend to sink into a pessimistic view on my situation here. I went to college for tourism management, hopefull to find a better job for myself, one that would enable me to help out my family a bit. I'm 42 now. No matter how many jobs (entry level) in the industry I applied for, I never got one and yes, I still applie. I work mainly in hard industry line production jobs, 3 shifts, that pay a bit (like 500 kn) more than 1 shift jobs outside the industrial sector. I cannot count how many times I've been promised a promotion, just for someone else (less qualified/experienced/knowelable) to get it, cause they had a connection to someone higher up. Hell, it goes as far I had to have a connection just to be able to be employed as a cleaner in a warehouse. It gets hard here if you don't have a good job. I could never buy myself a flat, cause banks will not approve a loan to someone with no job security and most firms give you a short term contract that should be made permanent in 3 yrs, which is when they terminate it. It gets frustrating living here, the fact you cannot plan your future, sink your teeth in working overtime knowing in 10 yrs it will be worth it, 'cause you will save up for a roof over your head or a business of your own. It seems hopeless sometimes and then I see you talking about so many positive things I tend to overlook, it gives me hope, it brings me back. I love the work-life balance here, I love the nature and climate, I love our warmhearted ppl, who are allways ready to lend a hand and tell it to you straight, and I love you for reminding me of it. Thank you! 🤗

I live in Croatia and have traveled extesively to most corners of it, and the diversity is really high. Not only geography and climate but the culture as well, and this is mostly to histrical influences of neighbooring countries. The arhitecture, cuisine, accents, social norms and customs all vary a lot even in a realatively small space. From the coast that is infulenced by italy, to dubrovnik which has a rich history of its own, to the mountains of lika, the Zagorje and Zagreb which have a large Austrian and german influence, over Podravina which has a large Hungarian influence, to the east with a mix of hungarian, serbian (mostly vojvodina) influences, down to slavonia which has a lot of bosnian influences(ottoman expansion was most felt here) to Pozega which is a city sourounded by a ring of mountains which develped in a kind of isolation. There's a lot of other examples, minor and major, and exploring all that gives you a good view on how much there is to see. Sometimes it feels that every nook and cranny is just so unique. There are also other universal things that connect us all together like football and good food ^^ These videos are so great and I must applaud the amount of promotion you do for our country, it's just a delight to see!

that's really cool. i feel like more and more of us are thinking the same. i left croatia when i was 5 years old with my family and grew up in germany before coming to Canada. I always had a desire to go back to Croatia but no one else from my family did, so i never had the courage to go back there alone. I like the points you mentioned, I would like to add what keeps me connected to the country even after being away for over 30years. is it's values and the music. whenever i feel down in life. Making some traditional dishes and listening to our music always cheers me up and reminds me all the rough times the people of the country have been through at the time just before we left the country.

@@z.z.onichi5365 yes there is a small exodus of us from western countries. Locals will tell you this is crazy idea and it is horrible here, but many of us know it is not that bad, every country has it's problems and bad politicians etc. If you want to return just do it

As someone as myself who is Croatian but was born outside of Croatia I get the questions as well. Why I dont move back to Germany. Everytime I ask them why should I? I consider my life here even better than in Germany. Sure Germany has its positive sides but as well as negative ones. And safety is one of them. I dont have to be afraid in the middle of the night as I have to be in Germany, especially nowadays. And I agree so much with your statement that some of my fellow Croats just see the bad here and dont see the good. Well there is the saying the grass is always greener on the other side ( or something like that) but not always when you ask me. I personally do agree with a lot you have said.
