    Hey Ryan, another top post mate. Thank you. I went out on my surf skate earlier this evening and practised the bottom turn technique you showed. Touching the ground with the trailing hand really helped me to get down and compressed. That's a top tip right there. I thought I was compressing before but now I really know it because my thighs were burning. Love your content. Was that Adelaide Pier btw?

    I skated 10 years prior to surfing. While your not as developed in the arms and shoulder Departement, the moment you start progressing to a smaller board and know where to be on the wave you'll be thankful your mind doesn't have to think about body position while doing certain moves.

    When I moved I lucked out and have the perfect driveway. A little downhill to gather speed then can practice various turns. I have a Carve board with inflatable tires so it's a little slower but doesn't get hung up on any of the things trees can drop that don't see but trip up my normal long board. With those tires there's no sliding though. Compressing and releasing is something that's really been helped with this board. I created 6 routines to work on both sides plus just agility. Great practice and exercise too!

    In terms of using an actual skateboard as s basic surfskate, I'd add (as a 25 year skateboarder, recent surfing convert) that it is possible, but I'd look into an old school shaped board (wide with little nose) and use trucks that turn well, such as indies or ace (the best at the time of writing). I'd also say that soft wheels (such as OJ superjuice or Santa Cruz slimeballs) and riser pads are a must. Wheel bite (when you turn too far and the board makes contact with the wheel) is not a pleasant slam on concrete! If you add up the costs of all of these things from new, it's probably close to a basic surfskate set up. I was lucky to have most of them knocking around in my garage. Still looking at investing in a dedicated surfskate at some point though!

    I think the clips hen you're demonstrating a maneuver are often too short. I get you're trying to focus on that particular move, but it helps to see some more lead up and how you're moving before you enter the move. It could help to talk a little more about how you're trying to set up and also just imagining the wave. That's what I got most out of this video, since I've seen some other good surf skate videos, is really imagining you're on a wave when you're doing this surf skate; up to this point I've mostly focused strictly on technique, only imagining what side the wave is on. Next time I go out, I'll be imagining the wave more. Surf skate helped me pump and generate speed much better, but now I want to connect to a big bottom turn to square me up to the face. I also liked the downhill street with driveways to simulate a wave.

    Great video! You’re doing lots of “power slides” when you skate, are you actually doing this same movement in the videos you’re showing of you doing snaps? Or when you’re surfing are you mostly just going from rail to rail in the video? My goal is to do a very sharp and quick snap, however I’m not sure if I should be doing a quick power slide movement or just do as I would on a half pipe when I do a front side slash on the coping (eg, I put lots of weight on the tail to pivot on the coping while turning my whole upper body / and then shift weight to front of board as I go down the half pipe to complete the trick and ride out). Thanks!

  • @88jonpaul

    @88jonpaul

    You said “power slide is to blow your tail out or do a fin release” so I’m wondering if I should trying to do the power slide movement when surfing all the time or mostly just do a quick pivot on the tail. Thanks!!

    I think the Smoothstar is the most realistic surf trainer. The model depends on your build. I have the Felipe Toledo 77 model at 5'10" and 155#. It allows the same wide stance as surfing instead of a skateboard stance.

    I have a CX Carver Bean Bag (Lost edition), surfskate and I love it! It's 28" but it's wide enough for my gorilla feet. 😋 I've been watching tutorials on how to do cutbacks, but I'm afraid that I might fall off my board. I can pump and carve without any issues. That cutback is intimidating the heck out of me! I think it's a height thing. This is my first surfskate and it sits higher than my longboard! More practice I guess. Thanks for this awesome video! 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Recommend fitting a split/lock washer to the adjustment mechanism bolt so it stays loose without backing out and rattling. Also, adjust the front & rear truck kingpin tension bolts to about 1-2 threads showing, and you will be carving. pumping and cutting-back like a god! Enjoy! 🤙

    Most skaters ride their trucks nice and loose to begin with. Carving is a standard technique to skateboarding. That said, regular skateboard trucks are pretty low, and wheelbite will stop you dead in your tracks on some of these moves!

    Does it really help a lot? I can ride cruisers perfectly cause I‘m already skating (normal skatebord) for like 12 years but never surfed. When I asked a (skate)buddy if it helps with surfing he just was like maybe it helps a bit and u pick up stuff quicker cause u already know how it feels to be on a board but over all it feels a lot different.
