The Top 5 Pistols of All Time: Autoloaders

In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves tells you what the 5 best autoloading handguns OF ALL TIME are. Well, technically, you told him when you participated in the 'March Gatness' tournament polls at www.gat.life this past spring (new polls coming next spring!) James takes the 5 most popular guns from that poll and gives you a little bit of history and a little bit of an explanation of their features and what made them groundbreaking. While each of these guns deserves its own video, James tries to compress all of this into a 20 minute video. Enjoy.

I agree, i understand the love for the others wonder 9s like the browning hp, sig p226 and cz75, but beretta is up there and it is arguably better than them. In fact the browning hp should be replaced by the m9 in this list.

revolverDOOMGUY Absolutely. P226 is deserving, but the M9 has proven its place. I still have no idea why the US army replaced it. Navy still uses it, though.

  • @revolverDOOMGUY

    @revolverDOOMGUY

I am fine with the m9 being replaced at some point because its time for the strike fired polymer guns to be adopted. Technology has moved. Yet we all know the m9 was a relible gun that had an easy to fix problem (the magazines) who got discredited because of years and years of false information, usually spreaded by people who never used it or who never took care of it. It has been the best wonder nine and it still has a long way to go before it becomes a museum piece.

The reason CZ75s are popular in competition is not because of the trigger. It is because of the weight. A CZ Shadow 2 or EAA Tanfo Stock 2 are like twice the weight of a Glock 34, which means far less recoil and muzzle flip.

From a historical stand point Borchart- The first pistol to be reliable enough for large production and the first to use a magazine in the grip. 1911- Although I'm not a huge fan today it really is the father of all pistols. It introduced the slide and tilting barrel in the same pistol in large numbers for the first time. Yes Browning used slides on earlier designs but they were almost all small cartridge blow back operated. Browning Hi Power- The first truely modern combat pistol. It had a slide, tilting barrel, DOUBLE STACK 9MM MAGAZINE. The Hi Power unmodified today is completely capable while a 1911 lags behind due to capacity. Walter P38- This was the cheaper alternative to the Luger P08 for the wehrmacht and as long as you can get around the fact it was built in Nazi controlled Germany it was really a good domestic design. It uses an open slide and a tilting locking block while the barrel rides on it's own independent rails. Later in life after WWII it became the Walthet P1 which was produced into the 1990s. The P1 is simply ba P38 but has an aluminum frame and greatly the pistol that popularised lighter weight alternatives to steel. The P38 legacy carrys on through the Beretta open slide designs today such as the M9 and Barreta 92 series as they function basically identically to the P38. Glock- We see these as nothing special and originally hated but you don't have to turn your head at any gun shop to see 10 pistols made with polymer frames. Yes the Glock was not the first to mainstream the polymer frame but it's the pistol that popularised it. And it's greatly changed how we manufacturer all forms of small arms today. Honorable mentions- TT-33- The first wide spread high pressure cartridge military pistol. CZ-75- Simply put a culmination of all things great in a pistol. Not really revolutionary but it brought many great elements together. Luger P08- The first self loading pistol to make militarys of the world question continuing on with service revolvers in large numbers. Ruger Mark 1- The first of the insanely popular Mark series that has been produced since the 1960s by the millions. It was the most popular self loading .22lr pistol series in the world and is chambed for the worlds most abundant and popular cartridge.

I have 2 1911s but, it definitely was dated by the 1980s. Still respect the gun and it's history. It wouldn't make my top 5 anymore other that historical impact.

I loved the 1912 and the Browning 9. They worked for me. SAS have binned the Browning 9 for the flock 17 and 19. The story goes on. By the way my best pistol for arm extension was the ruger SP 101 . What a little beast 😁

As someone that worships the CZ 75 every morning and every night, I am not surprised by it's position on the list, but I'm SOMEWHAT surprised it wasn't a modernized variant of the 75 like the 1911 was, i.e. the SP-01/Phantom, Shadow, or P-01. The original was great, don't get me wrong, but the versions with picatinny rails are automatically better - the P-01 in particular I feel like is probably the best overall for the majority of people. I'm also surprised that the 1911 wasn't number 2. I felt like the public consensus list would be as follows: G19, 1911, Hi-Power, CZ-75, P226 / possibly P320 My PERSONAL top 5 would be CZ 75 Tactical Sports Orange, CZ 75 Shadow 2, CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical, CZ-75 P-01, Sig P320.

My top 5 are the only autoloader pistols that I own or want to get: Browning Hi Power, Beretta 92FS, M1911A1, Glock 17, and the HK USP 45 (still need to get one). A bonus would be the Walther P99 which was the first gun I ever bought but sold it and probably should buy one again.

Well let’s see. 1) Springfield A1 loaded. 1994 edition with over 20k rounds 2) cz75 1994 varient over 15k rounds 3) 1974 Belgium made hipower 4) 1994 gen 2 19. Over 40k rounds. 5) 1998 xd9 My favorite firearms, in order. Almost in order that I acquired them. I’m glad my hillbilly ass has good taste based on “your” list. My edc was g26, then an xds45 since it was released, and now a hellcat. Sig 226 is the bedside gun. I’m actually surprised none of the original XD/xdsc series didn’t make the list, as well as the 26 since they were such a big deal for capacity vs size at the time they were introduced .

Thank you for this video. Although the CZ-75 is outstanding it is not as innovative as you claim. The rails inside the slide come from the 1935 license from Charles Petter, and it was first used by the french 1935 pistol (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modèle_1935_pistol). After WWII, it was adopted by the swiss P49/P210 ordnance pistol (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIG_Sauer_P210). In this respect, the relevance of the Cz-75 was that it brought together several major innovations (DA/SA pistol, double stack magazine and rails inside the slide). It did not use the decocker, but this paradoxically helped, as it made it more adapted to IPSC.

I’d go: Glock, CZ75, P226, Hi-Power, 1911. Not a Glock fanboy, I like all the other pistols except the Hi-Power better than it, but I can’t deny it created the plastic pistol and revolutionized the market.

Well, actually... Glock did not create the plastic pistol. The H&K VP70 is the first polymer, striker fired pistol. They came out in 1970. Only about 12 years before the Glock 17. Here is another “not so well kept” secret, H&Ks are still way better than Glocks. Go shoot a Vp9sk, for instance. But, Glock certainly does a good job with their advertising and name recognition. I am a Sig guy myself, but there are a ton of great options nowadays. HK, Sig, S&W, Ruger, Glock, Steyr, almost anything from any of these guys is really solid.

Re comment about the innovations in the CZ75, it's slide in the frame design was actually borrowed (or influenced) by the SIG P-210, and the locking lugs were heavily influenced by the Browning Hi-Power design lugs from John Browning.

Oh, and BTW, the Sphinx, which I know is a CZ copy is an absolutely fantastic firearm, I love mine so much that I carry it often. It's my favorite CCW and it's an absolute joy to shoot. It deserves an honorable mention I think. I shoot tighter groups with my Sphinx I own other than my Sig 1911 Scorpion, my 2.0, or my cheap Ruger Security 9 which happens to be my EDC and even though it's a very inexpensive gun at around $299 in most places, I think the fact that is has a full rail gives it it's accuracy. Anyhow, the Sphinx is an absolute joy to shoot and if you can get one do it, I've seen them selling for as low as $800 which is slightly lower than what I paid for mine, but you see where your money goes. At 50 yards at about 1/4 to 1/2 inch with my follow up shots.

I've got a Rock Island 1911, it's actually not bad for the price. Accurate, reliable (it's never failed since I bought it) and fires a decent round. Oh, and it costs half of what most 1911s cost. Not saying it's the best, but it's certainly not garbage either.

My Top 5: CZ 75 Reason Col Cooper said if you FORCE him to use a 9mm he'll use that & it's the ultimate law enforcement gun in that hemisphere. Browning Hi Power: Reason it was the master final work (YES he died in production) but it is the ULTIMATE military gun outside the U.S. and some U.S. guys had it too. My cousin in laws General had one when he gave him his first Bronze Star with Valor. Sig P210: Reason most accurate 9mm ever made. But it's made by a country that almost never fights and costs a fortune. GLOCK 19: Reason used by most American lawmen post 1990 and in the country which holds 46% of the world arms it's the most selling commercial gun. 1911: Reason BECAUSE

I love the hi power part of this. A friend of mine has a pristine looking one that her grandfather brought back sometime during what would have had to been ww2.. Along with capture papers that say it is a .380 for some reason.. Definitely a 9mm. But, it's definitely a Belgian hi power (I showed her it was Belgian from the, "Fabrique national herstal, Belgium," scroll marks on it) that is blued, virtually no wear except maybe a penny size spot of wearing near the grip/trigger guard, with stag grips.. I think that her grandpa took it off of an opposing soldier of some foreign country he encountered, lol..
