I am also about your age and am a nurse. The nursing work load for sure is easier on you when strength training is included. It isn’t the opposite. It isn’t like if you “rest” for your job you are going to feel better and not feel like crap. You have to lift and nurse at the same time. It increases your tolerance for nursing on the floor, it doesn’t take away.

I’ve trained over 20 years had some times off but no more than a few weeks. I’ve been a heavy drug user all my life till 2 years ago. I eat fairly well. My mental health is the reason why I started training. And is still the reason why to this day.

Notice how the guy in the middle, doesn't really make eye contact, with the guy, in the grey hat. The guy, in the middle, looks at the other guy, whenever hes talking, but not at the guy, with the grey hat. Watch and see for yourself. And his body language, (the guy in the middle), is showing the other guy, (in the grey hat), "subliminally", that he, (they guy in the middle), notices, that you're, (the guy in the grey hat) is an undercover combative hater, (towards the guy, in the middle) expertise. He notices how the grey hat guy, always wants to go against him. The quiet guy, with the blue hat on, is the wise one. You can tell, that he knows his roll, (which is a very important roll), but yet hes still there learning, with no shame in his game. That's the smart (1). I love this show, I just dont like discerning unnecessary underlined jealousy. Everything flows, until he opens his mouth. (He wants that middle seat)

I literally hated vegetables as a kid, teen. I got pneumonia 3x from my teen years into my mid 20s and it took me that 3rd time to decide to eat vegetables (lol) and just get my health in a better place. Since then I’ve started going to the gym consistently, competed as a powerlifter for 2 years and now have been weightlifting for 2 years as well and the more I’ve gotten to the place where I eat what I enjoy 90% of the time and although it may be “healthier” it’s like what Sal said! I love how I feel and I’ve felt a lot calmer in situations that would have easily triggered me 😅

Brilliant podcast! Major life event. Yep. Cancer and finding I had to scale back the training and intensity that I had been so used to for years. My gym and training had been 100% therapy for me before. The mental benefits outweighed any physical goal I had and to feel like I had to reduce that one thing I depended on was so hard. Turns out even though I had to scale back, it never went away and I found that I just had a new set of goals. Even though I was not going to hit PR’s the same way, I was about to hit different PR’s that have meant so much more to me. I value my training now more than ever. I have an oncology appointment coming up, I go do some squats or deadlifts, etc. Focus on being in the moment, my movement and breathing. One lesson I have learnt that has been priceless, work round the problem. Whatever it is. Work round it.

This past Sunday my mother in-law came into town and she is an older Mexican woman who can cook. I can remember in the past loving her cooking. Monday she cook one of my favorite meals and I struggled to eat it. I saw her cook with lard and I couldn't get past it, not to mention I didn't sleep well that night. I defiantly enjoy healthy eating and cooking my own food. I am happy to say I can check off many on this list!

👍👍👍 Yup. People with anxiety disorder or perfectionism ought to guard themselves from sinking into an eating disorder or exercise addiction when deciding to lose weight or build a physique. The tendency is incredibly strong for such people. Eat healthily but do not obsess over it. It is OK to enjoy that pancake or chocolate every now and then. Your midsection will not suddenly lard on blubber. And don't ever think it's the end of the world if you miss a workout or run due to real life commitments. Schedule your workouts round your life, not your life round your workouts. You HAVE A FAMILY and a LIFE.

I don't think it takes years to realize how good it makes you feel mentally. I quickly realized within the first few months. That is literally my main motivation it's been 3 years now and I'm going to do this until the day that I die specifically because it makes me feel amazing. It's also a great way to vent as well. Anytime I feel any type of way I just throw some weights around and feel better. And I highly recommend strength training to anybody with an anger problem. Strength training and exercise helps anger tremendously.

  • @Mellow4202

    @Mellow4202

I wouldn't recommend exercising while angry though cuz you might hurt yourself out of rage. Just a normal routine helps you feel less explosive and irritated in general. You might start to realize that things that used to piss you off don't really bother you as much.

these were all great points. And as a 57 year old I agree with them all! I think if you're still working out when you're older you've been forced to learn how to adapt and keep going, and to work with aging rather than fight against it. Also, the point about enjoying healthier eating and cooking is spot on - you learn by experience what makes you feel like crap and what makes you feel energised, so you come to truly enjoy what makes you feel good. Taste does also change over time and you seriously can learn to really enjoy foods you didn't in the past.

I just found you guys recently, and this episode definitely spoke the most to me. I've been trying my whole life to figure out a greater "why" for being in the gym, and I feel like I've finally found joy in it after struggling with weight loss and exercise for nearly 30 years. Starting and stopping, yo-yo dieting, life events and massive changes regularly happening, and any other excuse/cliche you can think of to get in my way. I completely agree with the 10 years being the gold standard for officially getting to a place where fitness is completely integrated into regular life. My record, at this point, is about 4 years after finding CrossFit. This is very recent, and it has definitely been screwed up a lot because of family, moving, and of course Covid. Somehow, I'm more active now than ever with it, and have really found my "why" in the pure bliss of improving myself MONTHLY. Not daily, that doesn't work. I love pushing myself with different movements and then retesting certain things I had previously done to see where I'm at. It's the push I've needed, and the goals of improvement are endless. It's made exercise fun and "gamified" it in a way that makes it more than just some arduous task I have to do to try and stay alive. My original "why's" have all come and gone. Desire to look a certain way, desire to be a certain number on the scale, desire to be an attractive partner to my wife, desire to be the best dad as I can possibly be have all not been sustainable. Some of those are painful to acknowledge as I love my family, but even that isn't a strong enough force to keep me going all the time. That still turns exercise into a chore or something of reluctance that I don't want to do. It wasn't until I found joy and growth in the movements that I actually began to hunger for the fitness. It's also changed the way I eat, sleep, and conduct myself daily. It's only been 4 years, but I can genuinely see that this is something I can continue to do for the rest of my life. This episode basically spoke to my entire journey and how I somehow accidentally got to where you guys had mentioned with food and exercise. Thanks for the podcast, and especially thanks for sharing your thoughts on this episode! -Mike

Sal's take on weightlifting is the most reasonable, useful, logical and accurate among many I've seen so far on KZread. What was a gamechanger for me was when I stopped aspiring to reach aesthetic goals exhibited by fitness models on gym walls and started enjoying my body's ability to progressively lift more weight. I apply Sal's pieces of advice regularly and, man I can tell you, it's surprising how unsurprisingly effective they ALL are. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the community ❤️

Wow this has just really hit me in such a positive way,I have just joined the dots and am so happy that I am now implementing so many of those points now I have been consistent for almost 10 years,I got into😅 fitness to loose the weight I gained from having my 2 children and after that I just kept it up,that lead me to learning so much about nutrition and I have fallen into a fitness and health lifestyle that has changed my life for the better.Over the years I have learnt to fast, make so many healing foods like bone broth, cure my IBS,increase all my health markers the list is endless.I have dabbled in keto and this journey helped me to realise that fat is not the enemy it’s the the type of fat.I set little goals here and there because it’s interesting to see how diet and fitness challenges effect my overall well being.I can’t afford a life coach or a therapist but I can workout, cook healthy food and to some degree that is my therapy.I share what I learn with friends and family, your channel is so awesome,it’s literally my go to everyday. I love what you said about working out because it feels good not just for body goals,I stopped that and I find myself doing such a variety of workouts because I love to move ,when time does not allow me to get to the gym I swing around kettlebells at home or do a HIIT,not getting to the gym is not a barrier for me at all and I love that. Thanks for everything you do,it makes a massive difference to how I look at health and fitness.😊😊😊

Naturally, it's fun to self-assess when hearing lists like this. Let's see how I think I did. 1 - consistent schedule ox - I'm pretty consistent with a mini-workout right after I wake up, but my main workouts are sporadic, albeit often. 2 - healthy relationship w/goals o - definitely for me. I have them and work toward them, but my life doesn't revolve around them. I kind of disagree with how you guys put this, though. I think obsessing over goals isn't always a bad thing. I think there can be a lot of clear benefit to it. What you need is a good relationship with ACHIEVING those goals. 3 - healthy food o - here's where I'm lucky to have a wife who loves to cook meat and vegetables. I typically eat pretty healthy and often track my nutrition, especially protein. That said, I LOVE junk food and desserts and eat them just about every day, but I have a handle on the amount that I consume. 4 - not just physical benefits o - I find a lot of zen in moving and lifting heavy weight, especially to intense, wild, and frantic music. I think this is one of the most important aspects to continued health missing from most people's lives. I've tried to make this connection in my family's lives, but they still haven't found it. 5 - good ager x - this is a consistent struggle of mine. I value my youth and ability to move well and feel good. I also love being alive and experiencing things. I don't look forward to losing these at all. 6 - fluid workouts o - whether I'm traveling, injured, or not feeling it that day, I'm usually really good at finding an effective method to do what I need to that aligns with my goals and situation. It's not always easy, but I think I've gotten pretty good at it. 7 - efficient gym time o - I usually have a plan and program when I go. Every once in a while, I won't and I'll just have fun. I think I've gotten really good at sifting out the time-wasting exercises and things that don't fit with my goals, but I used to be pretty bad at this. 8 - avoids diet fads o - I've never been a diet fad guy. 9 - happy cook ox - sometimes I enjoy cooking, but I get a bit tired of doing it every day. It can be time-consuming and tedious, so if I can find a way around it (such as having a wife who enjoys it), then all the better. 10 - not overdoing it x - I think I'm getting better at it, but I still probably overdo it. haha All-in-all, that would put me at 7 points! I guess that's not too bad.

I’ve been working out since grade school and can definitely identify with all of these. To add to the preparing your own food Point, I love eating at home and when I eat out I’m eye intentional about it. Not only do you know what you’re eating and make it how you like but it creates a better relationship with your food and also I think the energy put into while making the food is important also. I wouldn’t want someone who’s pissed off for example to make my food and then put that in my body. Hope that makes sense Lol. Anyway love the content!

Over time I transformed into a healthy version of myself who while I weigh the same am totally fit. This made me smile...9 out of 10 for life!

Even before I got into health and fitness I had an extreme passion for cooking. So even now that I am eating healthier, I love experimenting in the kitchen and trying to come up with ways to cook certain dishes. That would normally not be good for me and make them healthier. That's why I've really adopted the anabolic style diet. I'm also a high volume eater so the more I can chow down on for the least amount of calories, that's what I'm always on the lookout for.

Great content guys, wish my 18 and 21 year old boys would listen to what you guys are preaching. Been trying to get them to tame it back a little. Reminds me of the story of the old bull and the young bull standing on a hill looking over their herd of cows!! Two completely different outlooks that probably are not appropriate to tell here.

Have been in and out of gyms for over 30 years, been pretty consistent for the last 10 years, - these guys talk a lot of sense, but work outs need to be personalized as we are all different. personally I found that as an older dude, the correct work outs are really important, as we don't bounce back as easily as we did in our younger days. I have also found that to continue getting gains as you get older, correct supplementation is critical, - following good advice from channels like this, and the good supps I'm getting from learnapplysurvive, I am continuing to stay fit, strong and get gains

Does anyone know if they have a program for people who only have adjustable dumbbells and a few kettle bells? My dumbbells go from 10-90lb and I got a 35lb, 53lb and 70lb bell but haven't been to a commercial gym in years. Been loving this podcast and would really like to try one of their programs.

As a 47 year old I exercise for longevity and being able to function as I age. Perhaps it's too early to think about that but I do a handful of different modes of exercise following the one I can motivate myself to do each week. If I can't squats, I work arms or swim or Nordic walk or bike, etc. Life's too busy to understand everything about health and fitness. It's not my profession. But the doctors all say the exercise you have routinely done is the one to do. This may mean I spend some months aerobically weaker than others or with a drop in muscle, but I return to it all at some point each year.

My doctor tried to just give me pills when she diagnosed me with rheumatoid arthritis. I left learned how to eat an anti-inflammatory diet and walking more. I haven't had a major flare up since. Learning priming moves is new to me. I think it's great to not fear lifting heavy.

It really bugs me when old, fat, out of shape people give me crap because I workout and keep a clean diet. I'm 33, I know I'm going to get old, that's not a secret. I just don't wanna age like all these old people now and blame everything on my age. Nevermind the fact they abused their body for the last 40 years and now need 10 medications to keep everything working. Hopefully I'm lucky enough to become an old man someday, I just wanna do it better than most people. I don't wanna start caring about my health only when it becomes a problem.

I found the best kind of working out for me is lifting 3 times a week with splits than doing calastenics for the next 2 days to work every muscle one more time than rest for 2 days with walking for about 4 miles to the grocery store cause I got no car atm

I squat more consistently since listening to MP. I’m curious what your opinions are on the “safety squat bar”. Are they worth it? Or should perfecting your form on a normal straight bar be the focus? Are there benefits of one over the other?

The best gains will come from perfecting the barbell back squats, in my opinion. when done correctly, it works multiple muscles other then just quads.
