I would have at least squeezed in Marathon Man somewhere in the top 10. Laurence Olivier's Christian Szell is one of the most iconic movie villains ever.

Those are all great choices. It's interesting to see how gritty and realistic they look, including what is basically a fantasy, Rocky. That was the era. The only one I'd add is a personal fave, The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. I love a tense "bottle" movie, and the cast, including Jodie Foster, is great.

Network was prophetic , Honorable mention for a movie that was made that year , was the movie Silent Movie , to make a silent movie in 76 was a brave attempt at something different .

so, recently rewatched Heart of glass and am dropping it from my films of ´76 ... as i remembered it starts wonderfully moody, enigmatic and apocalyptic but it kinda never really takes that road and loses a bit of focus in what it really wants to say and diluting its premise . Interestingly enough, the ending recovers the tone set in the very first scene but unfortunately too late . With certain films i have the feeling their potential is not fully developed and this is one of them . ... ps : since i´m here let me metion i think it is an interesting exercise in film analysis and the relationship between style and form to compare and contrast the films of Pakula´s "paranoiac trilogy" . Especially Parallax (which is a dark, pessimistic and radical film in it´s portrayal of, let´s say, modernity) and the watergate movie (which sits more comfortably with the status quo perception/portrayal of the press and the "power structures") ... it´s an interesting case in how the same director portrays 2 (in some ways) opposite perceptions of reality and how that is conveyed through image and form . Shame, Pakula , as many other hollywood directors of the time kinda discontinued their critique to make more "conservative-liberal" mainstream films or simply stopped making films altogether

predicatbly some of the films i value are : face to face - i find Bergmans 70´s films in some ways the definitive statements/benchmarks on character depiction, relationship and complexity , coup de grace - it is a shame Schlondorff kinda abandoned his central european roots when he went on to make hollywood type films , casanova - imaginative, elusive, carnivalesque, irritating, oneiric - well, fellini , herz aus glas - contemplative, a kind of dyptich with Kaspar Hauser and a wonderful first sequence, the killing of a chinese bookie - offbeat , Kings of the road- may be Wenders´ first film to better fulfill its potential (he wont stop until Wings of desire is completed ), if one is overcome by a disturbing sinister-like feeling one might include Narciso ibanez-serrador´s who can kill a child? (and argue wether it was a strong influence -a year or two later- on a certain prolific horror writer), i also have a fond memory of Mickey and Nicky but memory has proved unreliable in the past so i´ll just put a question mark there somewhere ... gotta finally watch that harlan county film - now that i´ve been encouraged to... regards

Yes, that first ROCKY is outstanding and Stallone actually deserved to win the Oscar for best actor for that one, but why do you say the film is not quite set in the real world? Underdogs have certainly fought champions before, so I am not sure what your point was.

The last year I lived in San Diego my parents went to Escondido CA, (My Birthplace) and we watched Rocky at the drive in. I ren er thinking it was going to be a movie about “Rocky and Bullwinkle” then I see this guy bouncing a ball, and thought….Hmmm I think I’ll go to sleep. Little did I know how good it was. And what a iconic movie it would be. A few years back they made the movie “The Real Rocky” or something like that, the real life story of the man that they used to make the movie about. I always thought after that the movie was released that they should have given him more credit, I mean it was basically the guys story that they adopted to create Rocky, right???
