You're half way to making your own nematodes Emma. Leave them to ferment in the water butt and after a week strain the delicious liquid into a watering can . Then sprinkle all over your most precious crops. See Simplify Gardening channel where Tony shows the complete method .

Oh I put all my slugs & snails in my compost bin especially if I’ve just added loads of new material. Put them to work. Most of the time this works beautifully. However 2024 spring has been quite a different story I’ve used safe organic slug stuff but only on beds I cover with netting. Just can’t risk wildlife being affected. We have to adapt sometimes 🤩

I heard from Charles Dowding another UK KZreadr and no dig enthusiast, that the slugs like to hide near the wood in raised beds. He eliminated this problem by keeping his raised beds no dig and eliminating the wood frames. I know of two methods: one is copper tape, but if not properly maintained that risks leaching into the soil and the other is providing a barrier between the lettuces, cabbages and whatnot by using a collar around each item. Like a cloche but for veg. Hope you find a way…

I wouldn't put banana AROUND the tomatoes because that would attract some birds and animals to dig and pull tomatoes and around. Rather you want to dig in that peal under or at least around the tomato plant, but definitely cover with soil enough so it is not visible but can decompose in the ground to give desired food to the plant.

Unfortunately, slugs are always eating the food people leave out for hedgehogs and some won't touch it if they've been sliming all over it. I had one who would take one sniff and walk off but another one who was a guts and would eat it regardless. This year, I had so far absolutely no slug damage and besides a few stragglers, all the slugs now live around the compost area, and I scissor every single one I see, still use pellets and hope they stay under control.
