Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan have had a brotherly relationship. Kobe came into the league in 1996 at age of 18, Jordan had just won his 4th championship at the age of 33. Now ESPN is releasing the Jordan documentary and Jordan thinks that it would make people think he’s a horrible guy.
This story starts back when Kobe’s 19. It’s the 1997 season, Kobe’s breakout season. In his rookie season, he barely got to play averaging 15 minutes a game. He was practicing moves without the ball during this time (show Shaq clip) but his second season was different. An all-star, but perhaps more importantly, it was the start of the comparisons between Kobe and MJ, especially after the December 12th game. Kobe had just had two consecutive games of which he had career highs, 27 points against Houston, then 30 against the Mavs. And this game was another coming out party. Jordan came out guns blazing, and Kobe came and answered. Both were hitting jump shots over each other and Kobe hits this fade on him. It’s the game where this famous clip happens when Kobe is asking Jordan for advice. Kobe gets a new career high with 33, Jordan gets 36 and the win. It started the conversation on Kobe as the future. That carries into the next matchup and this time the matchup is all about Kobe and MJ. This time the Lakers won in a 25 point blowout and Kobe scored 20 while Jordan had 31.
Yes Kobe and Jordan would face off more and more and they would go at it, not as student teacher, but as competitors. They still hadn’t really talked off the court, not until Phil Jackson wanted to arrange a meeting between the two. It’s 1999, Jordan’s retired, again. Dang it Jordan. Jackson wanted Kobe to be a little more patient. Kobe’s heading to stardom at the age of 21, but Phil wanted him to set up the offense for Shaq instead of doing the normal 21 year old thing and take over. So Phil gets Jordan to come to Staples Center after a game, Jordan and Phil are chilling in a room, Kobe walks in for this meeting, and the first thing he says to Jordan, “You know I could kick your ass one-on-one.”
That’s when their brotherly relationship started. They were still rivals, but Jordan became a sort of big brother. Jordan said that Kobe would call him in the middle of the night to ask him questions and pick his brain, that it would get annoying but he understood it.
Kobe and Jordan bantered in the 2002 playoff game, at this point Kobe had 2 rings averaging 28 points a game and he was showing the talent that everyone was talking about a few years ago.
It was all fun and games until the next season. The Lakers face the Wizards on November 8 2002. Kobe had 27 points, Jordan had 25, but the Wizards came up with the 1 point win. That was already bad enough, but MJ being MJ had to talk his smack and told Kobe that “You can put the shoes on, but you aint ever gonna fill em.” Kobe was wearing Jordan 7s during that game.
That got Kobe mad, so mad that for 2 weeks, Kobe was silent. He didn’t speak to any of his teammates. Gilbert Arenas told this story.
Remember, Kobe has wanted to be great, Jordan was the guy he was getting compared to and who people were saying that he was copying. So for Jordan to say that was definitely a blow to his ego. And like Arenas said, everyone knew what was coming up next. Also. Gilbert Arenas is fun.
The Wizards would be up on March 28th. And man did he go off. Shot after shot, midrange, fadeaway, all in the face of Jordan. He scored 42 points in the first half including 8 3 pointers and at one point 9 consecutive shots. Yeah it was a massacre. It didn’t matter who was guarding him, especially when it was Jordan. His teammates already knew that was going to happen and they knew to give him the ball early and often. Let’s just say it wasn’t the first time that this sort of thing had happened. Maybe the most interesting part about this was that Kobe was making jokes at Jordan’s expense, laughing at him while wearing Jordan 3 PEs. That was a statement. Kobe wasn’t scared of MJ and he proved a point that those shoes, maybe those shoes could be filled.
Kobe and Jordan were alike in so many ways. They had this insatiable drive to be the best. They wanted to destroy their opponents and tear them down. Definitely tear them down. They were competitive beasts and we were lucky enough to see them go head to head. Jordan passed the torch to Kobe that night. A rare, amazing moment, but what do you think? I will miss Kobe every day for the rest of my life. As a kid, I was at awe with how talented and amazing Jordan was but didn't really understand the game of basketball asides the basics. As a young thats closed to Kobe's age, I watched Kobe from the start of his career till his last game and he made me appreciate the game. Win or loss, I supported Kobe and the Lakers and his Mamba mentality had a huge influence in my every day life. Thank you for making this video. I am glad we live in a time where legends like this can be viewed easily.

Kobe was one of the few athletes I enjoyed listening to. He was so well spoken, even during a half time interview after balling out he'll give you a well thought out response. True professional

How easy is it, after someone has reached their prime and set "their own" marks and records, to have a copycat come to surpass them. I'm only going to state this once, and I will NOT be going back and forth because I'm NOT being paid by MJ and if I saw him in the street, he wouldn't know me from Adam. KBB was a phenomenal "copy" of MJ. MJ took the earthly blueprint from his progenitors, and took it to the stratosphere and beyond. KBB, THE LORD GOD REST HIM AND Gigi's souls, though he played 5 more seasons, only barely equaled MJ, and that in only certain categories. But how brazen is that to talk smack to someone you "stole" from? We're talking about "stole" from. Even to the way interviews are done to running up and down the court to the way you celebrate championships. You yg'z need to go to Land of Basketball and do a side by side comparison. Won 3 straight...left the game, then returned to dominate 3 more. He had nothing left to prove or get up for. Nothing to challenge his competitive juices. He allegedly told KBB he would NEVER fill those shoes. He never did. See the stats. And even in the 5 championships, he was Robin to Shaq's Batman. And in season and playoff mvp's??? Really?? Also see the playoff stats and best game stats. And are we really going to compare Jalen Rose's '06 Raptors to Larry Bird's '86 playoff dynasty Celtics? .... really? That's great? The only thing he bested Jordan at was dribbling. Remember. He EXACTLY MIMICKED MJ... EXACTLY. This means he didn't even remake nor have his own blueprint. He had a goal to shoot for. Which is easiest, to plot your own path or copy someone else's. If there was no MJ to shoot for; there would have been no Black Mamba. I would have loved to have seen a young MJ in today's "no-touch", watered down league. If MJ and KBB had entered the league at the same time, we would have had the same results of every other superstar that was unfortunate to have come up with MJ. MJ's talent was "other-worldly". Period. Having said that. I do greatly respect KBB and it hurt me to my heart when he and the rest perished in that crash. You want to measure the manhood of MJ, go and watch his tear-filled dedication to KBB. He calls him a little brother. I say he was like his son. Oh and by the way, KBB had an NBA dad. MJ did not. I'm from MJ's era. The current generation is "suppose" to stand upon the shoulders of the previous generation. We are suppose to RELISH in your taking the torch and going higher and better and stronger so that our enjoyments of the games and competitions we love CONTINUES to bring us together and enjoy. So stop with all the comparisons and anger. MJ was a once in a lifetime. If we want to look honestly at the next game-changer. That would be Steph Curry. Not KBB. Not LBJ. Peace.

I think that in the end micheal was right, kobe didn’t fill his shoes but rather made his own, a pair worth just as much that made an impact just as heavy, both literally and figuratively kobe made a name for himself beside the goat, and that’s truly beautiful, two brothers side by side, two rivals, two kings

I dont think either could stop the other in a one on one match up. Physically, mentally, in terms of competitive drive there like twin brothers. Overall I'd give the slight edge to Jordan. Both players so entertaining to watch.
