The kid was at his brother's funeral.... You've clearly never lost a brother/sister, and if you have by some chance, then you should be even more understanding. The last thing on your mind when you're burying your brother is if you're going to offend people with your language. He spoke from his heart. And I could easily see how annoying it would be if people kept saying things like, "He's with God now" when he was clearly an Atheist, along with his brother's.

When you don't believe in an afterlife, all you have is LIFE. That's why life is so precious when you're an atheist. You only get one chance, so make it count here and now and don't live for the promise of some abstract reward or punishment you think you might theoretically get later.

Just cuz it's a national story doesn't mean you have to adapt it to the national scene. I'd be a little ticked off if my catholic brother died and someone from a different religion/no religion came in and told me that he was with some different god I didn't believe in/with no god at all . So I don't think this was inappropriate at all. RIP PAT TILLMAN

Pat was the perfect example of someone who was guided by his beliefs. All those who are religious should remember him when questioning how someone who doesn’t believe in God can possibly be guided by high moral standards.

"Thanks for coming- Pat's a fucking champion. And uh, always will be." That's all I really need at my funeral. Tell me how I made you feel, and how you'll remember me. That's all. Honest and to the point. And serve people great food and dessert afterwards. Funerals are parties for the living, in remembrance of the dead.

I think he's really brave for standing up for him. As difficult and painful as it was, I think he did the right thing. I really think that he would know his brother better than those other people, and I understand why he wanted to call bullshit on the other statements.

Courage and commitment to the best in our culture does not always tow the party line. Those brothers were US Army Rangers, their commitment was real; its not what too many of us would like to believe, but its what we need and its what gets us through when it counts. I am very proud of that family and their gift to the best in us.

I know this is long after your post, but in response to the first question of that post... "It does good things for people." If you need anything more than that, that's on you. If you need to get a reward in the afterlife and simply doing something good for someone isn't enough, that's your failing, not ours.

He is my hero. He had the courage to stand up for himself, his family and most of all his own brother. Very well done. Defining: -'Being true to yourself' And of cousre, faith in humanity a little bit restored. I hope all the religous nutcases that heard this can show the respect for the family that and most of all the brother and leave God and other shit out of his death.
