The Three Wisdoms with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche

In this video, Mingyur Rinpoche explains that there are different ways in which we can know something, ranging from intellectual to experiential understanding. He speaks about his own time of intensive study in which he developed strategies for going beyond mere intellectual knowledge, developing a lasting form of wisdom that remains with him to this day.

    @@Sh0n0 so you’re not even of African descent and call people nigga? Flies right off the keyboard doesn’t it? Try that haiku in real life and impart your one line wisdom after that experience. Your essay on backtracking and mentioning of anatman does not even scratch the surface of any teachings, moreover a student doesn’t go out there imparting absolute nonsense and talk about he received teachings, that’s an insult to one’s lama. The mere fact that you mentioned anatta (Pali/Sanskrit) makes me doubt you ever met a Tibetan master who would call it dag-med (དག་མེད།). You might be offended when I said your pea brain, but in this context, if you were actually “woke”, which I’m obviously not, or maybe am, you wouldn’t be spiteful. I belong to a more than 1200 year old Buddhist tradition and immersed in its culture, I’m not saying it out of arrogance but to say that I do not need philosophical interventions in KZread comment sections. Liking your own comments is immature too btw 🙈

    As a former Christian (and a former minister), rather than books, I would recommend several good teachers on KZread. Stephen Batchelor is great, as is Jack Kornfield. Also checkout some of the videos by Doug Smith (Doug's Dharma). Doug Smith often recommends some great books during his talks, but these videos will provide some good basics on Buddhist philosophy and Buddhist teachings.

    Rafaele - I understand your concern. I am a former Christian and a former Christian minister. I left Christianity and now practice a Secular (non-religious) form of Buddhism. I have given up on ALL forms of religion as superstition and myth. While it is possible to stay a Christian and still practice Buddhism, I find it a bit difficult to do so. A word of advice, if you stick with Christianity out of fear, then you know it's not a religion of love.

    So as the third step being meditation, do you meditate on the item that you want to bring forth/make it come alive by thinking about it as you meditate or just meditate as usual such as meditating on te mantra and or on your breath?

  • @alexp.s.4419

    @alexp.s.4419

    I think thinking about the object of interest would fall into step two, contemplation. Step 3 would be to move into an embodied activity involving the object of interest, after already understanding the reason and means to do it. So breathing and mantra would be a good example of the practice of step three, meditation. The meditation technique itself will depend on the object of interest and the knowledge previously acquired from both steps 1 and 2.

    @@pentingberhasil633 Yes, that is what I understand. Once the topic is sorted out in your mind through thinking, then you move into the embodied experience of it with mindful meditation. As a side observation from my own experience, thoughts may still occur in mindfulness meditation (such as a spontaneous insight or realization), but they are not pursued as in step 2. Also, I think it is okay to go back and forth between step 1, 2 and 3 if any of the steps present some difficulty for a specific topic. Each of them can support the other. I hope this answers your question.

    @@pentingberhasil633 It will depend on what you are attempting to know and understand. I am assuming, as well as I think Rinpoche is in the video, that what we are attempting to know and understand through these 3 steps has a practical or pragmatic nature. For example, let us suppose that the "topic" we want to know is walking (not just an abstraction, but a practical activity). Suppose we don't know how to walk because we suffered an injury. After we hear from the doctor or physical therapist what is our condition and what must be done (step 1) and work it out in our minds how to follow the recommendations and achieve the balance and stability necessary to walk again with confidence (step 2) then we move into actually attempting to walk (step 3). We might not be succesful at our first attempt, but it is the practice which is the significant step here (reason why it is called a step). We are experientially embodying the learning and the preparation from step 1 and 2 when we move into actually attempting to walk with our feet and legs in step 3. Does this make sense? If it helps, would you like to share what is the "topic" you have in mind? Maybe I can help explain better using your own object of interest or goal.

    هذا الرجل لا يصدقه ولا يسمعه الا المغيبون في متاهات التحريف والتخريف والتزيف ، كفانا شر هذا الرجل وشر من كان مثله ، حفظكم الله من كل مكروه وضر وشر ، كل عام وأنتم بخير .

    First and second wisdoms are quite clear, but meditating on knowledge? How does meditating about acquired knowledge translates to applying it? By his example, if you want to learn to drive a car you can apply the information learned by meditating? That does not make sense - you apply the knowledge by actually going for a drive, by gaining experience.

    The word "meditation" translates the Tibetan 'sgom' (Skt. bhāvanā) which has a very strong connotation of cultivating something, or making oneself get used to it and to make it a lived reality. So, for example, in the case of impermanence, it is easy to hear and understand the words, and when we really contemplate or think about it we can see that everything is impermanent and that it is a fact that holds up to scrutiny. But still, that is not a lived reality for us. We grasp onto things as if they were lasting to some degree. So meditation here would mean to bring that understanding into our experience, and start relating to things as they are: impermanent. Whenever we can, again and again, on the cushion and off the cushion, cultivate, habituate and get used to seeing things as impermanent. Again and again. Then there are all the other "objects of knowledge", the four truths, the two truths, dependent origination, emptiness, etc… once heard, understood and contemplated, these meanings need to become the fabric of our being, and not just conceptual ideas that we have a cognitive grasp of and can enumerate by heart. But we need to habituate ourselves to them through meditation/cultivation.

    I think the appropriate way of saying it would be meditating IN knowledge rather than ON knowledge. Meditation in the Buddhist context is not the development of an acquired knowledge as an intellectual pursuit, it is not analyzing of or about acquired knowledge (that would be the realm of the contemplation wisdom that Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche mentioned in the video). The wisdom of meditation is the very knowledge itself, not as an isolated separate object to be referred to, but as embodied in the knower, applied and in practice. Meditation in the Buddhist context is practice itself, not analysis. This is a common confusion between the Western and Eastern uses of the word.

    What??. Not exactly..1. you need to observe more ... 2. You need to interact practice test and validate observations... 3. Once youve mastered, let it go.. or let it happen..
