Awareness is what we are, it’s our nature, Mindfulness is a tool, a practice to direct the Awareness that we are.

That's what I thought/feel. Mindfulness is an active state that lead to awareness which is a passive state. You can be in awareness all the time, but not in mindfulness

@@deppham6107 ??? Awareness is Consciousness. There is no gender in any way or form as they are formless and are not physical. Your question is like asking if space is male or female or if the concept of time is male or female or if the music note B flat or F sharp are male or female.

@@JosephineLuu Awareness/Consciousness is your natural state and entirely what you are. It is pure being and a verb not a noun. Mindfulness is concentration using the mind and the brain to direct your focus to something.

Isiah 6:2,3 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory./Inspiration+The heavenly beings proclaim the glory of God. Seraphim is translated "burning ones, " and they are some kind of heavenly being. They proclaim holy, holy, holy the Lord is. They say that He is the holiest. The earth exhibits how glorious He is because His very breathe created it. Go look outside. Look at the grass, trees, and the sky. Each is a miracle. Amazing! God's glory surrounds us all the time. We just have to open our eyes and look at it. If you're struggling to see it, then just listen to the birds chirping - God gave them their voices too. The birds' song glorifies God./Prayer+Lord, the stars glorify You. The birds sing Your praise. Heavenly beings proclaim Your holiness. Rocks would cry out in praise if we remained silent. You are worshiped by all Your creation. You made the grass green, my eye to see color, and the cow to eat the grass. Your creation is more complex than I fathom. You reign over Your creation, and You are a good king. I bow before You as king. You are the king of my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Choice-less awareness. To be aware without discrimination.

But, awareness cannot be the object, so awareness is without objects that CAN be discriminated, in the midst of- or regardless of apparent objects!
This is very timely for me. I've recently realized that what's being called mindfulness meditation is object-oriented, while rinpoche's style, awareness meditation, is subject-oriented. When I meditate using awareness meditation, thoughts and feelings sometimes dissolve. In my mindfulness experience before, I focus on these thoughts and I get lost in them still.
@willyouwright
2 жыл бұрын
do they dissolve or are you just focusing past them.. Ignorance looks exactly like focusing. I think basking in them and letting observations pass freely is educational.. Its ok to get lost in thoughts.. Practice getting really lost in them and coming back.. Notice that something is able to move that focus around.. its not part of the focus.. Try and figure out or watch what is doing the observing..

@@willyouwright They dissolve, they sort of die down or quiet down, all the while my focus shifts to "the center" with awareness itself and it "expands" its reach, and for a moment my mind quiets. And I've been meditating for years now, and only got glimpses of this. I know what it feels like to be lost in thought and then recognizing that, then going back to the subject of meditation (like breath). That was most of my experience with mindfulness.

The pull of thoughts often begins with suffering, which in turn begins with ignorance. When lost amongst the trees, the goal is not always to escape the forest, but to observe the object of attachment -- the common thread; the inner conflict.

@@anujajoshi9548 One way is to back up and let the scene unfold. Object-oriented focuses on the perceptions, the feelings. Awareness steps back or out, to see the happenings; to see the way perceptions become feelings become reactions.

Your 1st video for me. Showed up in my feed, I wasn't sure for a sec when I saw the monk's robes (didn't know if this was for lay people) but I'm glad I clicked. You've explained the two practices very simply. Thank you for clarifying some of the questions I've been holding for a while. I practice Vipassana which is about object awareness and am a follower of Mooji who points to the subject. I'm drawn to the latter. Both are helpful in grounding and finding yourself. One is more direct.
He is right.. Mindfulness is almost impossible. I practiced mindful eating, where in we focus on the flavour of the food, ingredients of the food, texture of the food, chew properly so that we exactly know when our stomach is full.. But while doing so, many a times the mind shifts it's thoughts, maybe a random song, the presentation at the office or a TV show..I hope this is the case with many of us
@davidphillips8919

Yes, I don't practice mindfulness the way they teach, but one technique is to take 10-20 minutes to eat one bite, that'll slow down the process, force you to tune in more, but it sounds agonizing. The optimum way to be mindful, is to get rid of the distractions in our lives which take us from the present moment. Make sure we sleep, eat right, resolve what might be upsetting us. Consciously letting the past and future go. If a painful memory comes up, notice it, embrace it in the moment, with the intent on locating it's source later and going over it a few times. Contact only the sensory data, what you see, hear, taste, touch, etc and not the memory of who or what the scene was about. It is the 'sensory' data within the memory itself that was gathered by the senses of perception but could not be analyzed because it was too painful, and the mind is looking to reanalyze this perceptual data to form correct conclusions from it, and store the experience away as a file.

Agree. And there is one Rinzai Zen practice I use to exhale slowly and empty totally all breath from the lower lung/abdomen area - figuratively speaking. 3 breaths per minute more or less. It takes concentration where the mind ceases to wander. Do this for 10 minutes and longer and then all I am aware of is uninterrupted awareness itself - certainly not any breath. Breath as the object dissolves/becomes awareness itself.

The trick is to be aware of the shifting mind and do nothing about it. Thus awareness must and will be introduced into mindfulness, and there are no more problems of distraction. This kind of awareness is found in meditation when the object of meditation disappears while doing nothing for it to re-appear....

Once in my teens, once in my 20s, I experienced a tranquil setting without meditation or intent. It felt as though the top of my head was opened up, and I could see and experience everything, all around me. That second time I held onto it for well over a year, in a constant bliss state. Very nice! But it seemed more important to 'go back into the world.' Now I miss that bliss, a lot, but sometimes, if I get really quiet, _it's right there beside me,_ so I know I'm still on the Right Path.

Just excellent teaching. Clarifying. I have always wondered about a phrase like: "Place your awareness in your foot" or something like that spoken by popular mindfulness teachers. What I have thought they actually mean is: "Find your foot in awareness". You clarify this for me now. They are still pointing to awareness yet may actually divert attention to the foot instead. Many thanks.
Excellent. It's funny we lack awareness of awareness! And same for love, it should be an intransitive word. We don't need an object, we just shine our light, and it touches everything without selection. The important is who is aware and who loves. Then it shines around.

But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to Buddhists. Thanks for understanding.

Thank you for this. As always, insightful and enjoyable to listen to. Just reflecting on what I thought the difference between awareness and mindfulness was before watching the video was helpful. Watching the video was even more helpful :)
Great explanation of a complex topic. thanks
"...whatever was passing through my mind at any given moment was exactly the right thing to focus on, because that was where my attention was anyway. It’s the act of paying attention, my father explained, that gradually slows the rushing river in a way that would allow me to experience a little bit of space between what I was looking at and the simple awareness of looking. With practice, that space would grow longer and longer. Gradually, I’d stop identifying with the thoughts, emotions, and sensations I was experiencing and begin to identify with the pure awareness of experience." Page 22 Joyful Wisdom.

Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. Amazing speech....🥰🥰
Blessed again in Vancouver chaktsal Rinpoche la
Thanks for this explanation. Since English doesn't have direct translations for many Dharma concepts I am further inspired to learn some Tibetan for greater precision in terms.

Thank you Rinpoche. I just realized that what I have been practicing in the name of Mindfulness meditation was Awareness meditation all along.

Eckhart Tolle describes awareness as presence spaceness or even quite alertness, the space the sky which permits the clouds in your mind to exist, : You are the sky.
