The fact that Palmer was the one to rat out the spider thing is a touch of genius. It dissuades the viewers from thinking of him as a replica, and also shows that the thing goes to any extent to survive, even at the cost of its mates.

There is build up in the form of the paranoia being built up and McCready holding the dynamite. If anything goes wrong a little bit will go wrong bad. So the actual jump scares catch you by surprise. But this build up isn't built by audio or visual but through narrative tension.
Pay attention to Palmer and Norris in this scene, they're both Things. They're both coaxing the team to mistrust and polarize, impose action that would simultaneously remove a number of its enemies who oppose it, as well as create a sense of trust with those who would join it's side. Palmer-Thing gives away Norris-Thing’s severed head because it knows that it's lost it's ability to effectively blend in, and instead uses it as an opportunity to garner trust.

Exactly, you nailed it. And from a filmmaking standpoint, Palmer also gained the audience's trust. Because he reacted so naturally believable to seeing the spider-head. He basically spoke for the audience in that moment when he said the famous line, which made us connect to him even more. That's what made his reveal during the blood test scene all the more shocking and brilliant.
@jamespython5147

I don't believe that's the case with Palmer at all. Palmer is still Palmer but with the Thing inside it. Same with Norris. It takes control of the body when it chooses to or when it is hurt or threatened.
@coconut2204

@@jamespython5147 thats not true it doesn't take control over the body it replaces it with an exact copy which is even shown when blair checks the computer simulation its shows it absorbs its victims and take there form and yes it does know its the thing it sabotaged the blood bank and tried to turn every human against each other you could even see palmer thing being nervous when they where gonna take his blood test.
@tomsaros7793
Жыл бұрын
@@jamespython5147 The problem with this theory is that the Thing sabotaged the blood as it hid the torn clothes after assimilation. Or like Blair, he fooled the others and built a boat in secret all along. So the copy knows he's the Thing. He's good at using the memories and gestures of his victims. He's a great actor. If your theory were correct, for example, when one thing sabotages the blood, what happens? Does his "victim" lose consciousness? But then that would also be weird and from then on he would know himself to be no longer human.

It's only when he feels he is being threatened he reveals himself. Otherwise how it is able to mimic everything - dogs , humans without any single change. That even in few minutes or hour. Without any prior observation of the animal. Most interestingly how it is able to understand the language and speak? Something that u need to learn to understand. i love that entire jumpscare sequence just as much as everyone else, but the part where they break open the door and find mccready in the supply room is such a flawless scene. maccready is intensely paranoid and had been outside in blatantly fatal weather, you can see the pure look of devastation, anger and paranoia radiate from his face as he says, “anyone messes with me and the whole camp goes.” you can tell he is hurt, he is tired, and that he is DONE. the reason why the thing is SUCH a great movie is the fact that it executes the essence of horror perfectly. humanity’s biggest fear has always been the unknown, have it be death or the uncertainty of the future. the thing RELIES on that fear. the entire time you’re stuck in this constant unknown of “oh shit who’s the thing?? will they live?? who’s gonna turn next?? are THEY a thing??” and even after you finish the movie and come back to it, you watch incredible actors portray that fear and paranoia perfectly. peak writing, peak acting, perfect film. With the graphics, effects, and realistic looking models, this movie was just BEYOND ahead of it's time.

The greatest cosmic horror whodunnit of all time, I watched this with my cousins once and one of them suggested that maybe it wasn't so much a horror and more of a murder mystery with aliens, which I'd never thought before, good observation that man
Definitely in my top 10 all time greats!!! It's perfection.
My friends and I snuck into The Thing in June of 1982 .. We were 8th graders and were the only ones in the theater .. The very next day, we saw Iron Maiden and The Rods on the first leg of the Number Of the Beast tour in Glen Cove NY .. I haven;t had a better 24hrs since
I love how this movie actually has two aliens. One alien is the alien in the spacecraft. The second one is the thing that infected the other alien. So canonically, there are at least two confirmed extraterrestrial lifeforms in this story.

@@TheCenobyte85 I believe he means some other alien race built and flew the spacecraft you see in the first scenes of the film. That's what that huge spacecraft under the ice was. At some point a Thing infected those other aliens. Thats probably where those weird tentacles and spider legs come from when you see it transform. Or... the thing inherited the knowledge of how to fly and build these spacecrafts and travel to different worlds to spread. That's how Blair Thing knew how to build a Spaceship.

This has to be one of the greatest and scariest movies ever made !
I clearly remembered watching this on the big screen when I was in the 8th grade or 9th..loved it with Curt Russell! Rock on 80's 🤘
One of my favorite scenes!!! I love this movie!!!😍😍😍😍😍😄😄😄😄😄
06:41 I never noticed somebody is holding a knife in the foreground. I think that's the same guy that tries to knife macready in the blood test scene.

Yeah, it's Clark
The BEST film produced by John Carpenter!
This is disturbing but fascinating at the same time
6:40 - One of my favorite things about Carpenter (and DePalma for that matter) - how he always utilized his entire frame
This scene is a great example of proper use of amazing practical effects and tension in a horror movie
08:56 the reaction and look on his face says it all lmao
Watching this on HBO back in 1983 when I was 11 completely blew my mind! Still awesome! Love it!
7:05 his face and and scream is killing me
The effects in this movie are really something.
best horror alien movie without cgi and still look awsome today 2022. 10/10
great piece of narrative editing there with the cut to child’s after they go to his shack. Love how for a tiny moment we as the audience are supposed to think mcready is the thing with the handle turn and break of the window
At 53, I've seen literally ALL the horror movies from all the greats worth watching, but "The Thing" at 12yo... it's just still got "it" more than 40yrs later.

@apowellaudio4690 my friend The Thing (1982) directed by John Carpenter is number 1 and of course my all time favorite since my childhood when I saw it the first time in the 1990s and I gave it a 10/10 as well:).
You can never better a more paranoid horror than this... the best special effects ever... best sci-fi horror of all time. John Carpenter got it so spot on... Who Goes There....
The lack of music and sound track makes it more scary
When childs kicks open the door & you see it from the other side the axe marks are mostly gone then macs dynamite is well taped then falling apart then back together & during the second clip of doc defibrillating Kurt is laughing with a crew member in the background. The endless mistakes are part of the movies charm!
I LOVE this movie!!!!
The way he dramatically responded to getting his arms bitten off after getting tricked into it is the funniest shit ever😂😂😂😂😂😂

Wow Thank You soo much
The parallelism between MacReady and The Thing is brilliant. Both willing to do anything to survive, even kill they own mates.
8:48 it's me at age 5 waiting for mom to leave the room so I could sneak from her candy jar
This movie scared the crap out of me and gave me nightmares as a kid.
Amazing movie! Wish they could still do that now!
This is the scene that made me fall in love with movies. Horror movies specifically
Favorite movie ever period
I think this scene instilled a fear of things with eye stalks in me for a while as a kid.
I love how Copper screams. Its so drawn out.
good works Rob !
Awesomeness job
The best horror classic. It's up there. It's iconic. It's frightening. No one can be trusted.

What’s funny is only a handful of people (compared to the full population of America) actually liked this movie in literally any capacity whatsoever until about 1995. When this movie came out, it was considered “One of the most Offensively Disgusting movies ever created for seemingly no reason at all.” . This is not a Horror Classic, but a Cult Classic. It took at least 15 years for anyone to start caring about it.

@@johnnyrocket1685 Cult classics can become classics. I don’t think it is mutually exclusive. Some films are just not appreciated or exposed to enough people until later on.
Just imagine just imagine watching David Cronenberg's The Fly and John Carpenter's The Thing back to back!
