The crowd's roar filled the rodeo arena as the gates swung open and the bronco exploded out, bucking and kicking frantically. Sitting atop the swirling mass of muscle was a lean, focused cowboy, his gloved hand clenched tight on the saddle horn. Skee Burkes lived for those eight adrenaline-charged seconds. For the 26-year-old cowboy, nothing compared to the thrill of clinging to a bucking bronco, his tall frame twisting in harmony with the beast below. Hooves pounding dirt. The smells of leather, livestock and arena dust thick in the air. A raucous crowd hollering for more. Skee was born to ride and everyone knew his name.
Until one fateful night in 2023, when the cheers of the crowd turned to silent gasps of horror. One of rodeo’s rising young stars would take his last ride. What happened to this professional bronco rider in those final terrifying moments?
