As a kid who's dealt with Social workers and police, it's pure stupidity and an unbelievable amount lacking in empathy. Every thing Gabriel heard was also said to me when dealing with extreme abuse. It's sadly not that uncommon. The uncommon part is that the child dies. That's the only time the real questions are asked. You also have to take into account the kind of people this profession draws and what it will bring out of you after 10+ years. It extremely sad and unfortunate because it's sadly not that uncommon

My brother-in-law wanted to be a social worker. He made it about two years I think before he just couldn't continue. Too many doomed kids, too few resources, and no one gave a shit.

It’s hard Khalif, it’s crazy but I had to come to a realization on how to talk to my father through David. When he came out saying that his dad told him “I’m old I can’t change. I’m in my ways , you have to adjust to me” I had to sit back and come to that realization that I had to do the same for my dad & at this time we haven’t talked for over a year. It takes time but hopefully through time it’ll get better.

I listened to Stephanie Soo talk about that case. She talks about a lot of fucked up cases but that was probably one of the most depressing.

I think David's dad and my mom are the same lol. When she's asking a question, it's like what are you really asking? And she's stubborn too. The other night my brother pulled out a bug from the rice-you could see legs and everything. My mom goes, "that's just black rice."

I was so angry while and after watching this documentary. As someone who is going to work with children and just in human services, it is baffling how all these people called in the issues and how the social workers were so incompetent. So pathetic. I ended up writing a paper for my ethics class on the issues with intensive family preservation programs and the issues with mandatory reporting and importance in training mandatory reports at identifying and addressing child abuse. I mentioned Gabriel's case alongside similar cases that took place in my city (unfortunately I found multiple case studies in my city where kids were placed in homes where they were abused or passed too). It's really sad how so many kids fall between the cracks and some pass away when there were people around that were supposed to protect them. I just hate how black and white a lot of child services are, it's either social workers are tearing families apart over little things vs they believe that family needs to be together no matter what even if there is abuse and the child is safer being taken away. I believe anyone working with children need to be heavily trained on their role as a mandatory reporter and how it identify, assess and address possible abuse. Teachers, social workers, daycare workers, police officers, nurses, doctors, etc. I was so upset with this case and how the police officers threatened Gabriel because his mom said he was being a bad kid. I can't imagine how scary that would have been. The police should have never done that and should have been trained to identify possible child abuse.

The thing is that the law enforcement failed a child so immensely yet there is never any "what can we do to fix it and actually do better". There needs to be some form of retraining or something. I am never going to willing put absolute faith in the system if they are not willing to take responsibility for their mistakes.

In Vietnam we also have the same case David and it's just happened recently dude like last month or something, a 3 year old girl got abused to death by her biological mom and her mom boyfriend or step dad...Bro after the Gabriel Fernandez trailer, I was like "yo I recognized this, we also have the same case it's happen right here ".

My relationship with my dad is kind of similar to yours David, in the sense that we kind of have no relationship (or more so lack of substance in whatever relationship we have). He's basically the classic Asian immigrant dad, with that stoic exterior, that just gives commands, and gives annoying 30-minute lectures. Though I have to admit I do low-key appreciate it, as I understand that not everyone's dad is willing to sit down with them for extended periods/never had a father figure in their life. I guess in that respect I am pretty fortunate, its just that hearing how you and your dad mended things together over time, gives me hope that someday in the near future, I'll be able to gradually do the same with my dad to where our relationship has some substance to it. just to put it out here as a thought or maybe a question i dont really know but wouldnt it be a good idea to organise something where maybe the general public would be designated a period of time in which they carry out humanitarian services. for example here in this case wouldnt having the general public carry out duties as social workers it will regulate responsibility and the actual want to go through cases and verify whether children are safe and okay within these homes, again i dont know anything about these sorts of things and its just a theory that could be wrong in all sense just wanted to see opinions about it
