I think the reason older films look better is mostly because they were shot on film with less margin for error. This meant cinematographers had to plan every single shot, and take into account all the values of lighting, composition, tracking etc. They studied for years specifically on this craft and learned to master the basics and fundamentals. Also, they knew their film history better, with it being more recent at the time. Modern filmmakers would benefit from looking back at past craft and taking the best elements. People are far too concerned with trying to be edgy and cool. A beautiful shot is a beautiful shot and a bad one is a bad one.

The writer would be Cameron, I assume. Cameron's friend William Wisher helped Cameron with the script, un-credited, but I assume this is the type of ironic humor Cameron has an affinity for, like the wedding ring in the toilet scene from Abyss (only on the Abyss Special Edition version), so I assume it's Cameron. Wisher was credited as a co-writer of the book adaptation and also has a co-writing credit on T2.

Love your comment about Arnold being the perfect person to play this part because it wasn’t scripted that way at all. Reese mentions that the Terminators were infiltration units and James Cameron thought the scary thing about them would be their ability to blend into a crowd and be completely anonymous. To that end, his first choice to play the machine was Lance Hendrickson, who is in this movie as the police lieutenant and also appears in Aliens as Bishop. Everything changed after meeting Arnold, who cannot blend into a crowd at all, but does appear to be an unstoppable force chasing after our heroes. There’ a long running myth that OJ Simpson was considered for the part, but Cameron debunked that a while back. It was apparently suggested by a studio exec and never got past a pitch to Cameron, who immediately shot it down.

  • @calebmarmon1310

    @calebmarmon1310

Yeah I think Arnold works as a computer’s idea of blending in. It would still work to an extent, because he appears like a big hulking human. But it adds to that creeping eeriness that he’s blending in just enough to get close to his target. There’s no 4D chess going on. No long term-planning. There isn’t a human-like intelligence in there. Just a single-minded ruthless determination. And anything that resembles human thought exists as a simple imitation to achieve its goal.

@@shadowcatreacts I love the Special Edition version of T2, even though it does have more down time between action scenes than the regular version. Without going into specifics, it gives more time for humor, some alterations to how terminator tech is presented in the regular cut (at the same time, more cool FX, both CGI and practical), but also, some more dramatic and darker scenes, to flesh out the relationships between characters. It explains better where Sarah is coming from and how it affects the relationship between Sarah and her son and gives foreshadowing to Sarah's actions and the choices she makes. Either way. It's still a good movie. I loved the movie when I had seen the regular version more thsn 10 times. When I saw Special Edition, I still loved the movie, only I also loved the addition of some of those excised scenes.

@Noel McGinnis - Minor mistakes like the missing blade in the X-Acto knife when Arnold raises it up to his eye? I could never figure out why they did that. It's not like you see Arnold put the knife in his eye. From the angle they used, he could have had it several inches from his face and we wouldn't have been able to tell. And if they still felt a real blade was too dangerous, why not make a fake blade out of paper? For the second or so that it's on screen, nobody would have been able to tell the difference. And, while I know it's an iconic line, him saying "I'll be back." never made any sense. The cop wasn't paying any attention to it, and even if he had been, just walking away wouldn't have caused the terminator any problems. Remember, it's a machine, it only interacts with humans when it needs to, otherwise they don't matter to it. Notice that the terminator doesn't ask the man on the phone to move, or even say anything to him. It also didn't kill him because there was no reason to. It killed the gun shop owner because he would have called the police and/or might have had a gun, prematurely ruining the human disguise. It killed the cops in the police station purely to get them out of the way. If the punks hadn't attacked it, it probably would have let them live.

If you want a version where Michael Biehn (Reese) makes a cameo in a dream sequence, also, a version with more world building, humor, FX scenes and more human interaction between characters, even some slight changes to story, especially regarding Sarah's mental state and relationship with John, be sure to watch the Special Edition, which restores some of the scenes excised from the theatrical cut. Or if you want a more lean action movie with less pauses between action scenes, but missing out on some of those scenes, then watch the theatrical version. Both versions are great, only slightly different.

The real irony is that the machines could have achieved their objective by not sending the Terminator back at all. John only existed because Kyle was sent back to stop the Terminator. If they hadn't sent the cyborg, Kyle wouldn't have gone, either, and John would never have existed. Also, can we have some appreciation for what a drama queen the Terminator is? That barrier at the police station was just wood and glass; he could easily have punched through it and climbed right in. Did he do the simple, logical thing? NO. He literally FLOUNCED out the door and demolished the whole room with a car, like an entitled sorority girl mad that she wasn't being let into a nightclub. There’s an alternative view on this. The future war from the first movie happened and evolved naturally. Skynet was created, future war happened, John Conner rose to be the leader, destroys skynet, sends back Kyle his best soldier. But that John Connor had a different father. Kyle was not his father. The alternate timeline is where t2 exists. Kyle is John’s father now. Skynet was reverse engineered from the T800 from the first. The original timeline no longer exists. Paradox ensues. It could explain the T1000 as well. That in the first movie, the T800 is the newest and most scary threat. The resistance still have a hard time with them. That’s what Skynet sends back. In the new timeline, Skynet gets to the T800 much quicker, that’s why the resistance can capture and reprogram one, and the T1000 is skynets most advanced creation now

So he went to Italy, stayed in a hotel and at night, broke into editing room to re-cut the movie. Only, he had no money for food, so he stole discarded food from hotel room service trays. When Kyle Reese is glancing through the phone book, he glances over the name "Michael B. Connor." Reese was portrayed by Michael C. Biehn. The names Kyle, Reese, Connell (Michael Biehn's middle name), Connor, and Biehn are all Irish. I think. By all means, correct me if I'm wrong. I point it out because they actually made Reese's partial Irish heritage canon to his character in the later saga. Plus, Michael Biehn is half-Irish, half-German, further connecting him to the character. He also researched the Warsaw Ghetto resistance fighters in order make Reese "vibe" like a real guerrilla fighter. 12:34 That look of sheer hate on Reese's face every time he blasts the Terminator is so satisfying! 13:18 Notice how he introduces himself, even to a civilian, with his name, rank, and serial number, as if it's just second nature to do so. This drives home the point that his whole life has been consumed by war. 20:16 It's a stress laugh. 20:57 That rifle is an AR-18 (Armalite's "forgotten" rifle). There's a punk song by Gang of Four called 'Armalite Rifle'. It's mostly about the AR-18. 21:55 "I want the future to be unknown." ~James Cole (played by Bruce Willis), '12 Monkeys'. James Cole is a lot like Kyle Reese. Michael Biehn and Bruce Willis are both able to play action heroes with realistic human vulnerability. 22:55 All that battle damage has causes his flesh to become gangrenous. That basically means he's a cyborg zombie! Or zombie cyborg. Whichever. 28:53 Remember when Reese said that he'd always wondered what she was thinking at that moment? She was thinking of him! uwu

It is an issue of the more advanced technology. In many ways it makes things much more convenient (digital storage vs. film, the ability to do lower quality test runs and fine tune, far easier to make changes in post, etc). With that convenience there is a tendency for some laziness to start to creep in. If you look at top-tier examples of old school hand-drawn animation, the precision is exquisite, because it had to be. Additionally, there is far more emphasis these days on creating a marketable product, than a work of art. It's become much more about churning out a stream of films that will make the required return on investment. I like how Cameron decided to finish the Terminator. Kyle's last act with the bomb, effectively saved the lives of Sarah, and his son. But Sarah had to be the one to push that button in the end. It was a necessary step for her to become who she was meant to be.

@@shadowcatreacts Aside from the hype for T2 (which it will live up to), not only do you have fans with misleading opinions on the original Terminator movie but you get wildly different opinions on all the movies afterwards. Definitely decide for yourself whether you continue on past T2, but one thing that may help you understand the furore over the further sequels is a thing I only discovered in recent years. I saw all the theatrical versions, and to me, whilst I thought T3 was a bit weak and a bit of a cash grab, I’ve enjoyed all the sequels. I could understand people having a problem with T3, but couldn’t understand why for some people they absolutely hated all of them and thought they were all unnecessary. Then in the last couple of years I discovered that T2 had a different ending (or maybe two) depending on which cut you watch. That discovery brought it all into sharper focus. I won’t say much more here so I don’t spoil it for you in case you haven’t yet seen T2, but it won’t matter. Whichever version you see, as long as you are aware that the other ending(s) exist and what the general difference is, you’ll be able to get a clearer idea of the fans’ emotional states and whether to pursue more sequels or not.

Arnold's back in Terminator 2 as there are multiple identical copies of him in the future. The terminator chassis is a T-800 and the "Arnold" skin makes it a model T-101. T-102 etc. are the same T-800 chassis with a different skin. Terminator 2 was made 6 years after the original with a huge increase in budget - $6 million for the original, $100 million for the sequel. Translated to today's dollars that's roughly $17 million to $200 million, and most of that increase is right there on screen.

This is one of Schwarzenegger's earlier film roles, and he was still a little wooden, or robotic, naturally, so it helped with the role. If you want another really good early Arnie movie, Conan the Barbarian was one of the best (there were others, but a fairly short list) fantasy movies going until the Lord of the Rings era.

As a 14 year old at the time I was too young to get in to the theaters to see "The Terminator" when it first came out, but when it came on the cable movie networks the year after year... I want to say early August... I was REALLY looking forward to it. I was a reader of Starlog and Muscle and Fitness magazines so I was already familiar with a fair bit of the look of the Terminator and the movie, but when I saw it, when my parents were out one night, I... WAS... BLOWN... AWAY ! It became my third favorite movie at the time and since has upped just a little to my second favorite (if I get ties lol).

You caught the "baby daddy" thing faster than anyone so far.😎 4. If this wasn't a movie the ammunition would not have been available on the gun shop counter. 5. The reason you think older movies look better than many newer movies is because older movies were shot on film and a lot of newer movies are shot digitally. Although that’s not as much of an issue now, in the early 2000’s digital cameras could not achieve full dynamic range, meaning they couldn’t reproduce rich blacks and other colors so a lot of the colors looked washed out. A good example of this are the StarWars prequels; especially episode 1 & 2, the colors are weak giving those movies a cartoonish look. But the Original Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy were shot on film, so all the colors are rich giving the movies a more cinematic feel.

Another awesome reaction. 21:20 to 21:30 the construction of whatever is happening in the Background does the Terminator theme with metal clanging. IT'S WILD! It's funny that you mentioned Arnold's casting because James Cameron originally cast him as Kyle because 'the Terminator' was supposed to be an infiltration machine that should have looked more normal and less 'super swole'. That way it could blend in with the public and not stand out. After meeting with Cameron and reading more of the script they both decided to switch it up. A great change in casting, if you ask me. I can't wait to see your reaction to T2. The TV show, Sarah Connor Chronicles, was one of my favorite shows and would be the next thing I recommend to watch if you decide to continue with The Terminator after T2. Much love.

The original concept of this film was Cameron wondering what would a Michael Myers (Halloween) type unkillable monster look like in sci-fi. With the technology he'd be even more unstoppable. This makes Terminator a horror film with sci-fi in it. However, most people think it's the other way around; sci-fi flick with elements of horror. This was the film that MADE James Cameron. With a tiny budget, he made miracles. I mean, dig that cheesy music throughout, except for the iconic Terminator theme. The film grossed over 10x its budget at the box office, and Cameron has been flying high ever since.

Arnold took inspiration for his performance from an earlier film with killer androids, Westworld. The same one that the recent HBO series was based on. Yul Brynner played an android gunslinger who share's that same sense of unstoppable forward motion that the Terminator does. Screenplay by Michael Crichton, and if I had a nickel for every time Michael Chrichton wrote a movie about a massively ambitious theme park dependent on advanced technology that ends up being too complex to ever hope to control, so things go bad and people die, I'd have two nickels, but it's weird it happened twice. In some other timeline, they went with their original casting idea for the Terminator instead of Arnold. No telling how O.J. Simpson would have portrayed a robotic killing machine.

Then again, he also did Piranha 2, on which he was fired by the producer and not being able to make the final cut. In his defense, like he has said himself, he did make the best movie about flying piranhas ever made. It also had Lance Henriksen, who was Cameron's original choice for the role of Terminator, but ended up as one of the cops in it. Cameron even drew concept drawings with Henriksen as Terminator. Henriksen did get to play an android, eventually, in Cameron's Aliens.
