The really sad part is that because the doctor isn’t a human, he is conscious throughout the whole thing. That means he can hear exactly what they are saying. You can even see it in his face, throughout the scene his face gets more and more terrified. His tone shifts as well.

Also because he *Tries* to stop them by clinging his foot to a seat, it wasn't just them failing at throwing him out, that was *Him* trying desperately to not die. You could actually see and *(For me)* feel the fear coming off him, his whole tone shifts at that One moment, where it steals his voice. This episode is, by far, my favorite. Truly one of the more terrifyingly perfect episodes.

Amusing you fell right into the thesis of Midnight: who's really the enemy, and what should be done with them? I say the villain is the sentient entity. It's smart enough to play mind games with Doctor to steal his voice, it's smart enough to direct the passengers' fears. Thankfully some passengers are less susceptible to the sentient entity's sensations than others.

Not smart enough to try and act scared instead of smiling pleased while chanting about everyone having warm blood and fear. It really wasn't insidious enough at this point. I mean, this moment would really be "oh yeah it's this smiling maniac giving an evil speech not the nice man who's crying while repeating the crazy woman". The episode still kind of works, but it's patently silly at this point. Maybe it has some psychic powers its using to make them trust it more, but if it doesn't they should have worked this out even while being worked up.

Christ, David's acting is on a whole other level in this scene. You can SEE the fear in the Doctor's eyes. The way he trembles and cries. The fact he's even able to use his foot to stop them dragging him out should show just how determined and terrified he is in that moment. The acting, not just from David, was incredible in this episode. One of the most unbelievably underrated episodes of New Who.

There was a bit of for shadowing when the doctor and Donna are talking in the beginning, both Sky and the Hostess entered the vehicle at the same time and when you re watch the episode, knowing what happens to them at the end, it makes it really unsettling and to me adds a lot more weight to story. Another moment is when she was talking about the safety measures on the vehicle and jokes about them using the fire escape first. It's things like that which make it harder to see a 2nd or 3rd time.

I feel that this is the episode that should introduce people to Doctor Who instead of "Blink". While I do think "Blink" is a good and well written episode, "Midnight" actually has the Doctor in it. Additionaly, since he's flying solo, this episode mainly focuses on his character, so people can be introduced to the companion dynamic later.

Midnight is my personal favourite episode of Doctor Who, classic or reboot. I absolutely love how it puts the focus on the characters that are in every Doctor Who story but that we never get much info about, the random regular people that encounter The Doctor during his travels. It really shows how differently people can view him, as a genius who wants to save everyone, or as a arrogant control freak. Plus it's a pretty spooky episode to boot ;)

The only reason the hostess knew what happened is because the doctor got to know her, and she, him. She was a human being, prior to this episode the doctor would describe as brilliant and fascinating, and it doesn't matter whether she is an employee or "the help", he treated her with humanity and talked to her. If the doctor wasn't the person (alien) that he was, this wouldn't have happened and he would've been killed. Thats when she recognized Sky was not herself, but the entity. The doctor was fighting back, anyway he could, grabbing onto the seats, you could see him trembling as he had to say the the passengers to go ahead with killing him. The only people to come to his aid were shut down by a maniac, paranoid group of humans, and the entity knew this and played it to its advantage. The only way to defeat it was for one to selflessly give their life to stop the entity because there was no convincing the passengers. It probably thought all the humans would be too self interested to consider that possibility. The worst part, is we never get to know the entity. What was it's goal? What was its end game? Was it a ghost in search of a body? A vengeful spirit trying to stop humans occupying its planet? Was it trolling us? What happens if it succeeded in killing the doctor? Was it a an enemy of the doctor, but why? And what then after it has finished him off?

The beautiful aspect of this episode is how well it represents the total break down of truth when people are scared. The disagreements on whether or not the thing was in the Doctor or was just draining him sprung up from a single suggestion, a single sentence. "Well it can't be, because I saw it pass from her to him." The visual aspect of an entity entering the Doctor's mind NEVER occured, and yet that one fearful passenger was able to convince practically everyone else of the Doctor's being the problem by suggesting a way to make the problem of figuring out what to do, backing it up with something she thought she may have seen. The moment where she asks her son if he'd seen it and he acts unsure, followed by her reprimand of "oh, don't be stupid, of course you saw" immediately sways the situation from being uncertain of anything to being certain of one thing, and that anyone who disagrees is weak or incapable of seeing what is plain to see. And that's SUCH a common trend among people in groups. The power of suggestion.

She recognized the severity of the situation and knew what needed to be done from the beginning, had the guts to acknowledge what was actually happening when nobody else had the courage to even face that possibility (thus willfully blinding themselves to a potentially apocalyptic threat and ultimately even serving the demon for no other reason than their own cowardice), and most importantly gave her own life to deal with the threat once and for all.

David's acting in this scene (and the entire episode) is off the charts. Just look at his face in this scene as the Doctor is forced to repeat "Sky's" words and is genuinely terrified, which is rare (and may be a first) for Ten. Just amazing.

Not only is the entity itself just terrifying ... it's the people too. They're irrational, rude, awful, and perhaps they're the most unsettling part of the episode.

Of course their fears and aggressions were also amplified and clouded their judgements further too through the entity's telepathic manipulation on them. But yeah, sorta showed how horrifying they/we could be.

This basically the first time we've seen the Doctor truly terrified, sure he's been angry sad, but genuinely fearing for his life not a companion His most human moment.

Brilliant episode. Fear of the unknown at its core making humanity act monstrous. In the end, there was no companion to save the Doctor, just the nameless stewardess that DID NOT hesitate to sacrifice herself the moment it dawned on her that the Doctor was right and that it took his voice.

This episode was so heart breaking, at least this part. This was tbe most realistic and human weve seen the Doctor. He was scared, so scared about dying right there by 'stupid' humans. Always will be my fav episode..

I will die on the hill that this was a scarier episode than "Blink". The Doctor's own genius turned against him, the real monster is just plain old human fear and paranoia and yet it unsettles the Doctor like we've rarely ever seen? Not even a contest.

The bit that really gets me about this scene is the insidious continuation of the creature's hidden motive. Presumably it wants heat, because it commented on how cold Midnight was and mentions the hot blood of the humans. But then it mentions the human ability to feel pain. All other antagonistic aliens the Doctor had encountered so far either wanted to rid the universe of other species that didn't count itself or just feed. What's really disturbing is why a creature would pay so much interest in human pain... not even the daleks or weeping angels bothered with that. Really disturbing concept. Any time any information was given, it raised more terrifying questions than answers. And nearly killed a being that the majority of alien villains feared and respected in a matter of minutes having presumably never come into contact with humanoid life before. It certainly made a gaping impact.

In the word of a great agent from MIB "a person is smart. People are dumb, dangerous animals and you know it." Here we can see one of the bad situations of being in a group. When people are scared, their judgment is clouded, save for some. However, the people who are not clouded are usually in the minority. The majority's priority is always to eliminate the threat ASAP and ensure survival. They will not patiently sit back and consider alternatives.

Yep. This is why mob mentality is so dangerous. It only takes one rock to go from a peaceful protest to a violent mob. People very quickly turn on those they put in the "other" group.

This episode was really good and the monster was actually really unnerving. What I think made the Midnight Entity so powerful was not the mimicking part but that it brought out the absolute worst of everyone on board to the point that some of them would resort to straight up murder.
