I actually love this episode. 0:48 terrified me as a kid. Seeing the Doctor very briefly become the villain shook me to the core, even if it was simply a sun possessing him. Still, hearing him say "Burn with me, Martha" still gives me shivers to this day.

Say what you want about the plot but man do I LOVE the set design of this episode. Especially with some of the moments of 42 that really ramped up the tension of seeing whether or not Martha was gonna be ejected into the sun or seeing The Doctor stare into the heart of a living sun. Honestly rewatching 42 just reminds me of how much I love this episode, even more so than when I first saw it in 2007 (Oh my god its been over ten years since this aired) No idea why this one is as hated as it is. This episode was a hell of a lot better than the bloody Lazarus Experiment

Vasudev Raghav well in the past, the Doctor’s been special because of what he’s done but if he/she really were the timeless child then he/she’d be special by birth which isn’t very inspiring. It’s hard to explain so I’d recommend looking up video essays about it. Also, I just think the Master would work better as the timeless child. I do have an idea how it could be fixed though if you wanted to hear(read?) it?

This is one of the best episodes of the RTD era. The tension ramps up the entire time due to some excellent plotting. Notice that the biggest setbacks occur after any victory the team makes. Which is how you earn that hopeless tense feeling. Because the audience isn’t allowed to enjoy any victory, they feel smaller. Especially because our minds, much like the characters, immediately shift to this new fire they need to put out. And they just keep getting bigger. It starts out with hope because this is a regular Tuesday for the Doctor. Then we get brewing dread when they recover the first infected. Then the first seeds of doubt are planted when the doctor can’t remember a simple history fact, his area of expertise… because he’s stressed. Then they keep making progress, every time being foiled and set back by the infected. And then one of the infected begins chasing martha and local cute boy. But they escape… into an *escape pod.* And ironically, their escape has put them in even MORE danger. That moment where the Doctor keeps repeating that he’ll save her… it gives her and the audience a horrified moment to process that their already impossible situation just got infinitely worse, with yet ANOTHER clock ticking down much MUCH faster. So then, in a move of pure legendary heroics, the doctor becomes a shining beacon of hope as he somehow pulls Martha back, The Doctor Saves Martha and Local Cute Boy from being ejected in an escape pod! But before we can get any time to celebrate, the unthinkable happens: The doctor gets INFECTED. We went from one impossible crisis to a somehow WORSE one. The Doctor is so sure he is about to die that he begins warning her what regeneration is. And now it’s up to Martha to keep her cool because it is quite literally *the only thing they have left.* And thus begins the exorcism of the doctor… which is immediately thwarted. And as the situation looks most desperate, the doctor reveals the solution to both of the threats facing the crew. And with this shining ray of hope, martha sprints towards the front of the ship. But before she can get there, “Burn with me Martha.” *We lose the Doctor.* which means the little ray of hope Martha carries is their *last shot.* They are out of time and options so if this doesn’t work… Notice the ebb and flow of “the tides of victory” (or in this case: the tides of progress toward escaping). They save the BIG set backs for just after any small victory the team gets. They take 1 step forward, 2 steps back. The entire episode until the very end, when they escape with 2 seconds left on the clock.

Absolutely, I define series 3 as a series of 2 halves, imo, the first half (Smith and Jones-The Lazarus Experiment) is a weaker set of episodes, with still the odd one good one (gridlock). Whereas the second half (42-LOTT) is a much stronger set of episodes, this is why, although I love series 3, its still 4th in my series ranking. Love the channel btw!

Sam Harrison I think this episode is good because it was the first of its kind, but when you’re watch all of his episodes the timer becomes a reliance for him and it becomes less and less unique, just look at dinosaurs on a spaceship and the power of 3 both had countdowns to a disappointing ending

I think we'll get Series 11 Episode 1 on the 8th of September, which is the nearest Saturday to the 6th. The 6th is an important day, not only because of what you just mentioned, but because averaging the times between Trailer #1 and #2 of the last three Series, we end up with August 14 being when we get trailer #2, which is then important because averaging the time between Trailer #2 and the Series air date for the same Series and adding that number as days to August 14 gives us September 6 also. Is that over complex and a bit insane? Yes, probably, but I was bored and had nothing better to do, so I decided to calculate the average number of days between Trailers #1 and #2 and Trailer #2 and the Series air date for the past three Series to have a rough estimate for the Series 11 air date.

I know not everyone cares for the Martha era because of the unrequited love angle, but dang, that moment when she rushes into his arms and they cling to each other for dear life, just thrilled to be alive and together, hits me so hard. They had so many great moments.

Think it would’ve been cool to see the yellow regeneration energy start appearing slowly around his neck and face as he started screaming, would’ve hammered home his line about the “process when he’s about to die”. Obviously it would stop when the sun leaves him, but I think it would’ve made it quite impactful

Multiple Doctors' regeneration has been triggered by harmful events, notably radiation or similar energy poisoning, note the 9th and 10th Doctor's regenerations. 11 also states to the cyberplanner that could regenerate as a final option to expel the cybermind from his own.

a lot of the RTD-era did pacing, tension & excitement really well. 42 is one such example. It may be written by Chibs, but it's got RTD's stamp all over it. This excitement factor hasn't been seen since Angels in Manhatten. From the time Clara came aboard Doctor Who took out all tension by going meta all the way to the end of the Capaldi. Chibs tried to bring this magic energy back but for many reasons (one of them a miscast Doctor with boring Tardis crew) it's just not worked.

This is why I feel the earlier series were better, the cinematography and the lighting and the sets were so much more rustic and real feeling and the acting was so much more emotive. The new series feel so much more manufactured, with the dark lighting and the overuse of cgi and theatrical feel to creates so much disconnect between me the viewer now, I’m just not invested in the action. To put it simply, I prefer it when it had the budget and production crew and value of eastenders than I do now looking like a movie
