"Natural Ood must never kill, sir." That's actually a very chilling statement. Not only because of how calmly Sigma says it, but because he states that they have no intention of killing him, so they have something far worse (by Halpen's standards) in store for him.

Funny thing about this episode, the Doctor didn't actually do anything. This one time, he and Donna were just witnesses. The Ood revolution happened around them. They were willing to help but really they just got shifted around in the tides of events already transpiring, and in the end they allowed him to flip the switch they could just as easily have done themselves. I don't know why they gratuitously thanked him at the end. All he did the whole episode was run around and get repeatedly captured.

TheFounderUtopia maybe they thanked him for supporting them? I mean, it's no secret that once the doctor disagrees with something he puts a stop to it. Maybe they thanked him for not opposing, and inevitably stopping them from doing what they intended to do.

He was the first person who had shown up in god-knows-how-long that didn't treat them like disposable trash. Yeah, he didn't free them, they did that themselves. But once they were free, they remembered those few who treated them like they were worth something. It speaks to the inherent gentleness of the Ood. They praise those who are just nice to them. Think of the phrase "those who wear their heart on their sleeve." This is a species who offers their brain in their hand. They offer good thoughts willingly to those who would accept them.

@@Silverwind87 No, they don't become judges of morality, they're the opposite of judges of morality. I wouldn't say that judging morality is less human, or, rather, I wouldn't equate "being human" with "being good". You have to judge morality, that's what uncertainty does, that's what doubt does. You have to judge the value of a certain mode of being in order to choose whether you should continue that mode of being. Therefor, what Mr. Halpen hasn't done is judge his mode of being, which is why he hasn't considered its rightness or wrongness. Personally, I think judges of morality are "good", but I think those humans, who judge all morality even their own rigorously, are exceptionally rare, therefor, I wouldn't say they are very "human".

For example: rape is bad, child murder is bad, love and compassion are good, gravity exists, etc, etc. The point of this episode isn't to say "Don't think you know something for certain". That's just silly. I know many things for certain, like how Wild Berry Pop-tarts are amazing, and I'll enjoy them until I'm dead.

There's a fantastic line from a villain in the tv show Dead Zone which has a similar sentiment. The bad guy is a politician aspiring to become President, and the hero is a psychic who's had a vision that if he gets elected the country will be wiped out in a nuclear war. But this bad guy is such a charming sociopath and incredibly sure of himself in that fundamentalist Christian sort of way, so he doesn't give a shit. When they meet, he just says "you're right a lot, aren't you? It's a powerful feeling, to know that you're right." And it just shows you everything you need to know about the character. The most powerful villains are those who KNOW that they're right.

@@tathemrelag3123 I don’t think the Ood are controlled by the hive mind, per say They’re certainly CONNECTED by the hive mind, and they CAN be taken over if either something goes wrong with the hive mind, or a malicious entity replaces that hive mind, but they ARE separate individuals mentally, who have free will & all. It’s just that their main emotions are love & compassion, both for each other & for all living beings in general. As the Doctor said, they evolved literally holding half of their brain in their hands, forced to implicitly trust anyone & everyone they meet with their lives So they evolved to be kind & compassionate above all else. So, my interpretation of it is While Halpen was transformed physically, and certainly also changed mentally, he didn’t become a mindless Ood drone So he’s still himself, but his greed and selfishness were replaced by love, compassion, and an acute awareness of his deep connection to all other Ood. So if I were to guess, I’d say he’s probably not happy at the transformation, at least not at first, but he’s almost definitely more remorseful than anything else. So, overall, I think this transformation does Halpen more good than bad in the long term, and it’s not like he was taken over by a hive mind, more like he was gifted the Oods’ love and compassion. So overall, I think Halpen still has free will, and even most of his personality still intact as it was before, it’s just that the greed & selfishness was replaced by love & compassion.

Man, Davies really had a thing for inter-species transformations and the like. Not just people transforming into monsters, but people transforming into another, already existing species. There's this, The Daleks at the end of the first season, Daleks in Manhattan, the "Master Race." I'm sure there are more, but that's just off the top of my head. I can think of worse metaphors for finding empathy or whatever, but still, it gets pretty tired after awhile.

He also treated the ood with rare kindness and compassion, and didnt get in the way of their revolution. He might not have led the revolution, sure, but the Ood clearly feel grateful for what he did do for them.
