the reason is probably due to the fact, if this thing came back at all, free. It would kill so many people before the doctor could do anything, if the doctor could do anything. this thing predates all of time, it know the doctors fears and his past, it would be the most dangerous force if it live through the black hole

firedrake372 which would make his return an amazing season/series finale. The ultimate fear of all doctors having to be confronted, and the concern of the current doctor all summed in one monster and it's not just the typical foe. It's something that had already scared him, something that can make him feel the weight of all his sins, and something the doctor can't answer and solve on his own, he's going to have to leave his fate to someone else. Not someone he trained for this, but someone he doesn't know a stranger, the ultimate role reversal for the doctor.

I agree that would be super cool, I would also like to see the master confront Satan, imagine the master being outsmarted by another evil character, one who knows everything about why the master is a villain, why he is insane an the fact that deep down after all the battles, that the master just wants his friend back.

Like, you can sense that, to him, it's simple and obvious and the fact that the Doctor isn't getting it aggravates him. - "Is that YOUR religion?" - "You will die... and I will LIVE." Just... you get the sense almost that the mere fact that they're alive is anathema to the Beast. - The way the cable snaps just as the Doctor is hitting the climax of his feel-good rally speech. I sometimes feel like people don't appreciate how special these two episodes are to the Doctor Who universe. I found it very intriguing because the Doctor had come upon something that was not even in his realm of understanding. And even in the end, to this day we're not fully sure what that "Satan" creature was. I understand that even though the Doctor doesn't know everything and has demonstrated this on multiple occasions I still find it very interesting that this creature stumped him when he said "Is that your religion?" because up until that point, the Doctor was the most knowledgeable person in these episodes, and with those four words his knowledge was put into question by even himself.

Just to clarify, it has been said in a lot of places, including The Writer's Tale, that head writer Russell T. Davies did a page one rewrite of this story and created what it is today. The dialogue in this clip is almost certainly 100% RTD. The snippets of Matt Jones' version he discusses sounds like a very different version, with Rose being possessed and the Slitheen as humanity's slave race. RTD replaced them with the Ood during the rewrite, which is why when the Ood reappear in the Steven Moffat era, the end credits say "Ood Created by Russell T. Davies," not Matt Jones. RTD went without credit because he was being paid enough as Executive Producer and a co-wrote credit takes away residuals and money from the freelance writer.

The Beast was the first villain I can remember that spoke down to The Doctor, to make him feel as if he wasn't this great ancient time lord but a small insect.

When the Beast says "Clinging to your suns" it really puts into perspective just how old the Beast is. It creates a gravitas makes you realize that any life in this universe originates from a solar system, and the Beast predates all of that; he came before the concept suns, or a system, reason, logic, or time itself, the Beast came before the the very concept of conception. So the Doctor is besides himself, he's encountered a being that defies all comprehension and for the first time he doesn't quite know what to make of it.

This two parter is, in my personal opinion, the most well written episode of all the seasons since 2005 (I can't speak for pre renewal due to the fact that I haven't seen them). I wish that the Beast was brought back at some point (although seeing how the series has gone recently I should probably hope that such a fantastic villain is not tainted). The Beast is brilliant written, being more threatening than the Master and the Daleks combined. His speech, combined with the reactions of the all the characters, shows his incredible power and enigmatic persona. A creature that the Doctor feels genuinely ignorant of and is completely terrified of just because of what it says is something to praise.

I utterly LOVE this scene. I just love to see the Doctor start out all confident and irreverent, mocking the beast and sure that he knows everything about it, because he is a Time Master, the most knowledgeable being in this universe... and then realize that the Beast is something utterly alien even to him. Something he cannot rationally comprehend. Something that shakes the foundation of all of his knowledge.

  • @TheKangLock

Will Wheatley Yes but the entire point of this episode is to show that sometimes moving past something with a "I honestly don't know either way" is the best thing to do, and to not go "SCIENCE FTW" or "LOL RELIGION ANSWERS ALL". But to rationally go "Yeah, we just don't know. Was there a rational explanation or not? I can't say, either way". Because just blindly being on either side of the fence without any breathing room for a shrug here and there will just cloud your mind. The Doctor ends up just shrugging and not trying to answer either way if what he witnessed really WAS Satan. He doesn't try and go "NO IT CAN'T BE. SATAN DOESN'T EXIST", while at the same time they don't straight out say "YEAH IT WAS SATAN". I like that. It's a good message in all honesty, to not just blindly think one way or another and sometimes accept that you just don't know and might never know.

HE COULD HAVE JUST SAID "Some aliens are mind readers. I, myself, am mildly telepathic." It’s funny, I’ve starting reading some H.P. Lovecraft who often wrote about forbidden knowledge, the unknown and men of science discovering there were far greater things at work in the universe than they thought. Doctor Who moments like this sprung to mind because it gives off some Lovecraftian vibes for me, it’s amazing to see how far his influence has stretched! Episodes like Midnight also seem to fit the bill.

The expanded universe of Who really goes in for all the Lovecraft stuff - apparently, the Great Intelligence is Yog-Sothoth, Fenric is Hastur the Unspeakable, and the Doctor may or may not be Nyarlathotep.

Rewatch hell bent, asylum of the daleks, death in heaven, the snowmen, dark water, the witch's familiar, the wedding of river song and the beast below. All written by Moffat. Yep Soooo much better. At least RTD always tried to make a good episode. It didn't work every time but he didn't throw all potential out of the window like Moffat did in his finales. Hell bent ruined the return of Gallifrey focusing on Clara, DIH was one of many examples where Moffat handles a classic villain poorly (the cybermen). Compare asylum otd to the parting of the ways, where the daleks are a true intimidating threat. Moffat turns all classic villains into pushovers, or ruins their character (missy). RTD never just gave up and reused his old tropes and he didn't kill a character off multiple times in a season just to keep them alive to ruin the finale. Moffat has brought the show too far downhill. He simply doesn't try anymore.

Makes me think that before the universe, at least in the Doctor Who canon, what we now know to be the universe could have been several entangled singularities, all existing independently, and then the cataclysm came, and the merged to make one universe. The Beast may have come from a place of thought, joining with a place of matter to give it form, but then those singularities collided with a place of light, who then gave those that lived in darkness the ability to see, and they fought against the Beast, for whilst it once had predominant thought and form, light was where it lacked, and it was defeated. This is how life could have existed before the universe, multiple singularities coexisting until an event, the Big Bang, brought them into alignment and they became one.

I don't think I've seen anyone else comment this, but the quiet organ playing in the background really adds to the drama of this scene. It's so synonymous with religious themes, and it really adds character to the Beast. I think it really adds to the overall theme of the true Lovecraftian theme and threat the Beast truly represents

I just had an epiphany. 1:24 "Before time and light and space and matter. Before the cataclysm." There was one other episode where a major "Cataclysm" was mentioned. Season 4, episode 13: Journey's End, spoken by the Supreme Dalek Commander. "The fleet will gather at The Crucible! All Daleks will return to shelter from the Cataclysm!" The Cataclysm that The Beast spoke of was the parallel reality where the Daleks successfully detonated The Reality Bomb, turning all realities to dust. Which raises even more questions. Just what was The Beast and who were The Disciples of The Light?

ToxicBalloon360 You could even say the Beast influence is what caused Davos to create the Daleks, and the Disciples of the light be to ancestors to the Timelords, as the show loves to deal with terms and themes like "History repeating its self". The Timelords always carried religious undertones like being Akin to Angels and heavenly beings, and there past is now lost and considered "legend",the Time war was said to effect a large portion of the universe, and was only felt by "higher beings", so it's possible the events in this universe was the Cataclysm on a smaller less violent scale. The only thing I kind of wonder was, The Disciples of the light vanished either through Time or went back to there own plain of existent, but whatever happened to the Disciples of Darkness???? Even the Daleks made it through the time war (if History again repeated its self). I always love episodes like this that really build the mythos even if they aren't expanded upon.

There are so many great lines in this small scene. Complete shift in the normal power dynamics of the Doctor being the smartest in the room. He starts in almost condescending questioning with the "What beast are you?" and flaunting his knowledge of religions and cultures, but gradually he loses that. You can tell from the moment The Beast calls the Doctor "Killer of his own kind" that the Doctor realises he is speaking to an equal who knows of the timelords and even his involvement in their destruction. He switches to "how did you end up on this rock", acknowledging that a being of that capacity wouldn't be on somewhere as insignificant (in their scales) as some "rock" by choice. Then slowly the Doctor asks for more information, curiously, about the timing of The Beast's imprisonment and (as people have pointed out) is actually stumped by the questioning of the Doctor's "religion". The Doctor is not the smartest in the room anymore, he no longer deals in certainty but instead in beliefs like everyone else. Absolutely a masterful episode that puts the Doctor as a piece in someone else's game.

Does anyone notice how the doctor can't quite dismiss the fact that the Beast knows each and every single one of them by heart, despite the fact that you keep saying that he's a really good psychologist? This is probably a good example of the doctor lying to people to keep them tough and brave.
