The Telescope (望遠鏡) was designed by architect Ishiyama Osamu (石山修武) and completed in 1973. It is one of his works that can be found around Aichi Prefecture. Another, and more famous, is the 幻庵 (Gen-An, usually translated as “fantasy villa” although I prefer calling it “phantom retreat”) ,located in Shinshiro City and completed in 1975. These buildings take as inspiration the architectural ideas of Kawai Kenji (川合健二), in particularly his Oil Drum House (ドラム缶の家) or Kawai Kenji Residence (川合健二邸), also found in Aichi Prefecture, Toyohashi City. All these structures have no foundations or supporting columns and there are made of building materials such as sheets of corrugated steel typically used in civil engineering projects. The Telescope was originally used as a showroom related to ships. Now, covered in graffiti, it is mainly used as a storage space.
