How These Two Japanese Homes Have Been Designed Around a Shared Garden

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Japanese architect Hiroyuki Unemori designed two homes in Tokyo, one for himself and one for his sister-in-law, emphasising connection, but also privacy for each family.
Instead of a traditional fence, an open alley connects the two families, providing usable outdoor space, sunlight, and a connection to the gardens. Unemori utilised building coverage ratio regulations, creating elevated terraces and semi-underground spaces for each home.
The design incorporates specific window placements to connect each family with the sky, city, and nature. Both homes feature warm timber interiors and ample natural light. Unemori sees the project not as two separate houses, but as a small commons for their families, emphasising a generous and communal lifestyle.
English and Japanese subtitles are available.

Perfect design...co-living with family is coming back in trend & with the cost of living skyrocketing in so many countries is actually quite a sensible solution. This design captures a wonderful essence of privacy & togetherness.

What a heart for community he has! Very lively collaboration of two homes. Love it! Also, how wonderful for neighbors being there for each other in times of need…for example, physically challenged or the elderly having a need for caring neighbors.

To think this was created from an open lot. I can't even imagine designing or visualizing this on paper before it was constructed.

I love everything about these houses and their concept. The ‘communal’ alleyway is a wonderful way to connect neighbours, the interior materials of the houses feel warm and inviting and the change of levels creates interesting spaces. Does anyone know where these are?

Stunning and unique building! Also beautifully shot. I always love the composition of the shots, so artistic! If I may just comment on one aspect I noticed since watching this channel which may be a matter of taste but perhaps something to consider: I sometimes feel a bit desorientated as the shots - beautiful as they are - shift rapidly to a different location in the house with seemingly little spatial connection between them (perhaps I'm the only one who feels a bit lost this way). It sometimes gives me the feeling that I haven't seen the whole house, which leaves me somewhat unfulfilled. I'd like to be more constructive as I unfortunately don't have a specific solution in mind within the style of the channel but I just wanted to share in case this feedback is useful :) Anyway, I keep watching for the tasteful stills and wonderful architecture so keep it up!

Hi Tony, thank you for your comment, it's something I'm aware of (and amplified probably with this particular video given it's two houses in one). If I may offer some perspective from my end, but please don't take this as me being defensive or 'biting back'. The main reason it isn't so 'sequenced' is because the story the architect presents isn't room-by-room, instead we focus on bigger picture things like site, brief, challenges, idea, materials and sustainability. There is a short segment about the layout (with the floor plan) popping up, and I try to make that a sequence which gives a visual flow. So with a story the way I present it, I try to pair shots that relate more so to what they are speaking about, rather than what room is next. So if they talk about the brief being a grand kitchen and dedicated home office, I'll show the kitchen and home office, and they might be at other ends of the home. If that makes sense? There are also parts of the home I don't film, whether it's at the request of the owners, or it's just not that interesting to the story, or it's a room that becomes the 'shoot day storage' (as not every home is filmed 100% the way it's lived in). So this probably contributes to your feeling of not always seeing the whole house, as sometimes the whole house isn't shown. Back to your original point of disorientation and lack of sequencing, I'll continue to work on this.

@@SimpleDwelling I appreciate your reply and perspective! It gave me a better grasp of what's behind the desorientation that I couldn't exactly put a finger on. I may be more sensitive to it than most. I definitely understand the format makes spatial awareness more difficult and that it's not an easy task to include it. Glad though that I wasn't crazy thinking some parts of the houses were missing! Thanks again for your thoughts and for making these videos - they are both inspiring and relaxing :)

Hi Chris, can we dive a bit deeper into your comment? I ask because typically I have a single shot up for 5-6 seconds, then I cut to another 5-6 second shot. Would you prefer something longer? I'm just curious as a lot of other architecture channels, and KZread at large, are all about the fast cuts, and I'm here thinking 6 seconds for one shot is a lifetime...
