The Team That Plays Offense Like a Video Game

Спорт

BYU is currently on pace to become the fourth ever high-major to shoot more three-pointers than two-pointers in a season. This video breaks down the X's and O's, offensive concepts, and players behind Mark Pope's 5-Out offensive scheme. Including the Cougars' use of "zoom" action.

@@purdmangolf the NBA has always had skilled players and athletes, but after the pistons won an NBA championship from playing dominant defense they changed alot of stuff. I really wish they would bring back hand checking because alot of players that score alot in the league would be getting shut down. The game is to score baskets and keep the other team from scoring baskets, when you basically handicap the defense by the way the game is called is a true shame. Because we will never see another player like Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant because those guys were built off the defense they faced and competition they went up against on a game by game basis. Imagine trying to guard anybody without being allowed to put your hands on them, then imagine how much easier it would be if you could put a hand on them and keep them from going in certain directions, the NBA went downhill from that point imo. If they brought it back it could literally make the NBA 10 times better and it wouldnt be a 3 point shooting contest every game when you can run dudes off the line.

@@Wetrockstah2116 yeah but imagine MJ and Kobe facing contestant double teams and zone defenses and help schemes like the modern nba allows. Illegal defense barely allowed help defense in the 80s and 90s. The nba certainly did not always have the average skill level, ball handling ability, shooting prowess that it has today. 20 players made over 200 3s last season, in 1996 only 3 players did. 36 players shot over 40% from deep last year. 17 did it in 1996. In my opinion the nba is the best it has ever been and you are glorifying the hand check era with rose tinted lenses. Obviously certain things may be going a bit too far, like the lack of traveling enforcement and carrying, and excessive foul baiting (which they are fighting back against). But the league has Steph, Lebron, Giannis, SGA, Wemby, Jokic, Embiid, Zion, Luka, Durant, Kawhi, Kyrie, Brunson, Haliburton, AD, the beard, the brow, Sengun, Banchero, Randle, Porzingis, Trae Young…the list of incredibly skilled and entertaining and tough amazing players goes on and on and yet you’re stuck on Jordan and Kobe. Oh yeah I almost forgot this old guy named LeBron. I would like to know what you think hand checking could do to deter a guy like Steph. Or Zion. Or Gianni’s. Etc. Imagine those guys playing when sagging off your man weak side to help was basically not allowed. Packing the paint, not allowed. The defense was better back then because the offensive spacing was worse and the lane was clogged because everyone hung out inside the three point line. Defenders now are far quicker stronger more explosive and athletic and the defensive schemes more advanced.

@@theknubbles5075 It could really go either way. BYU is a unique job. It is hard to recruit the best talent here because of the honor code, but I think Pope has done really really well in getting as good of talent as he can get. He’s a very hard working and good recruiter. Want he doesn’t have is any titles or tournament wins. IMO, his coaching has definitely lost us games, including our most recent tournament loss to Duquesne. It’s tough to say whether or not the superior talent he will get at UK will be able to get him over the edge of winning tournament games. I assume it will, but wining 1-2 tournament games isn’t what UK aspires to, so who really knows if he can go all the way. Hasn’t shown it yet, but he also hasn’t had the talent and recruiting tools to possibly get him there.

Any chance you could talk about A&M and their emphasis on offensive rebounding and second chance points? Currently they have a 6'7 Dennis Rodman 2.0 named Andersson Garcia from the Dominican Republic and he is currently SECOND in the nation for offensive rebounding. All while coming off the bench. Guy had a 2 game sec stretch with 33 total rebounds and almost half were offensive!

😂😂 yup,I’m a UK fan,and I think most of us feel or felt the same way and that was we might be in bad shape but idk,Pope has been running a really good team at BYU and fundamentally way better than what Cals been doing WITH THE TOP RECRUITS in the country year after year and can’t coach em to save his damn life,Arkansas fans are about to see,Cal absolutely can NOT coach,he’s a fantastic recruiter and probably a good guy(which from what I heard on the Matt Jones show, that’s even questionable) but recruiting isn’t as critical as it once was with NIL money, but anyway, I think UK is heading in the right direction,Pope seems to be a fantastic coach and with the resources of UK,he should have access to more and better players,we shall see I reckon ✌️

Interestingly, one of the only 3 teams to shoot more threes than BYU is Indiana State, who (despite a dud a couple days ago), is 26th in offensive efficiency and leads nation in eFG%.

Hi Jordan. The fake handoff read in zoom action really looks like a movefrom the triangle offense, pinch post action. Old centers, less mobile than today, used to do this all the time for the guards.

Rick Majerus ran a similar offense. He’s one of the most underrated coaches in college basketball.

Great analysis. Have you ever considered how similar this is to the 49ers' offense when Deebo is playing? Same schemes, different ball.

Is it a Mormon thing? Cardston Cougars, a Canadian Mormon high school has been playing like this for probably over 20 years. I imagine the Raymond Comets have a similar “Mormon” play style. Always shoot threes and box out the paint for any missed shots.

Yeah kind of, so here's my interpretation I guess. Mormons have basketball courts in there meetinghouses at least in the US, I don't know about the rest of the world. Most of them play basketball every week from about the age of 12 or so. When playing on those courts as a teenager, I noticed that the style is kind of sloppy but very frenetic and fast paced. Also, a lot of Mormons end up playing for other schools because there in a better conference. For example, Mark Pope played for Kentucky and Washington. Now that BYU's in the Big 12 though I think they'll end up being pretty dominant in the next few years.
