The Tale of Jenny and Screech REN... A SWIFT First Reaction!

The Tale of Jenny and Screech kept me guessing at each twist and turn and left me completely floored. Continuing down the REN rabbit hole and this one was a visceral and alarming tale that did not end as I expected... A memorable story told my a literary genius. This reaction is not to be missed!

    Next: Ren was a member of The Big Push band, they were a busking band on the streets of Brighton, UK. In this busking session they do a mashup covers of Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff”, Damian Marley’s “Road To Zion”, DJ Luck/MC Neat’s “Little Bit of Luck” & Dead Prez’s “Hip Hop”. Ren is wearing Red Suspenders in the video. It’s a busking classic. Loved your reaction BTW.

    Welcome to 'Bardcore'. Ren read a newspaper article about a 14 year old boy who had killed a prostitute. Ren wrote and performed Jenny's Tale based on that incident. with the comment 'It's such a shame' which seems to be the standard, banal response when these terrible events occur. A couple of years later he elaborated with Screech's Tale. and a couple of years after that he tied it all up with Violet's Tale. turning the the trilogy into a comment on generational trauma. There are a million Easter egg's in the trilogy.

    great reaction 🦋 brilliant ain’t he? the most hard hitting part for me emotionally, the part that can turn me into a sobbing mess, still after having seen it a couple of hundred times, if my mood is so (even slightly) inclined is the fact that in violets tale ren tells us that she’s a silent girl and this line he repeats several times. through all of her story we don’t hear her say a single word, not even when abused does she break her silence right… which makes this hit so fucking hard “you see violet she was pregnant, poor violet she was nine months gone. >turning to the doctor violet ***broke her silence and she cried*** !!!! >if i’m to die right here tonight please let my babies stay alive.!!! it made me gasp for air the first few times cuz without really saying much, while still saying everything ! you feel her love for her babies (i believe she’s aware she’s expecting twins, i think he’s hiding the S at the at the end in the start of the next word babie/s/tay, but you feel the mountainous amount of love she has for her babies, this girl that’su been abused her whole life and neglected by her mother, and the fact that he makes you feel that love and part desperation from her with with othe nly 7 simple words “violet broke her silence and she cried and the emotion in his voice in

I've watched a great number of these reactions for the trilogy and it seems women are more sensitive to the line about Violet's father tucking her in but never leaving the room. It's like automatic that we know, sad really. You seem so empathetic and Ren gotcha in the feels with this. Astute of you to think Violet might be Screech's mum. Thanks so much. His busking collabs with Sam Tompkins are so good to watch and listen to. But be prepared to go down another rabbit hole with Sam Tompkins solo work. They met when Sam was busking when he was around 16 and new to the game. He had no accompaniment and no mic. Ren (who was around 24 and a bit more seasoned at busking) saw him and thought he was good but needed some help so he lent him a mic and played guitar for him. There is a recording of this first meeting and on Sam's video for "Time Will Fly"

    Another great reaction! My face went 😮 a couple times too when he really went into the darker characters at first - and these are more like Broadway performance pieces it feels with his versatility and animated acting ability. And that guitar is like an extension of him and does have that Spanish/Hispanic Flamenco sound to it at times with the nylon strings that give it a fuller, more gritty sound. And then he changes it up and we get vibes of alternative rock (in my opinion). I think the director Sam really shines on this one, was so creative - especially with the 4 bullets shot at him part. My favorite part was the third act - "Violet's Tale". Did you notice how he went in reverse in his chord progression when he said they needed to "rewind the hands of time"? And such an eerie vibe on that hospital bed when he's looking at and wondering about god knows what was behind those curtains, lol. I see you have a ton of requests for more Ren already so I'm just going to stay quiet on recommendations and enjoy the ride 😅 I will have a request eventually for another artist and I'm not sure how it works with you - but you'll get your time and energy filled up with more Ren for the foreseeable future if you continue going down the rabbit hole. 🍻

    This is a story about victims of generational trauma. It refers to trauma that is passed down from survivals of trauma to their descendants.I feel that Violets tale deepens the tragedy of Jenny and Screech tale. If Jenny would have had a childhood, feeling wanted, loved and cared for that would have allowed her to be the child that she was, - instead of "walking the streets". And if James (Screech) "dear boy", ( as Ren so respectfully says) had felt loved, and safe... Yes, that is the thoughts this story brings to mind. They all gro up in a society that put blame and shame on the most fragile victims of the tremendous inequality this system create. Both Jenny, James, Violet, and Steve reacts the way science tells us

    You have it right - Violet was their mom and died when they were born. Assume they grew up separately in foster care and didn't know they had a sibling. What you may have missed is that Jenny and Screech were both 14 years old and Jenny was "in high heeled shoes" having "walked the streets 1,000 times before". Ren saw an article about a boy on trial for stabbing a young prostitute (I don't know if she actually died). The comment section was filled with "what a shame" without any thought or examination of how those kids ended up in that situation. Ren's VERY socially conscious, so he wanted to examine how it could have happened and ended up with this Shakespearian tragedy of a commentary on cycles of abuse and how people are often victims of the situations they're born into. You'll see/hear a lot of social commentary in his heavier songs. Ren has been through the wringer himself with his parents' divorce, his illness, misdiagnosis, and losing a close friend to suicide at 19 years old - you'll hear a lot of that in his songs too. When you need a break from the heavy songs, he has some that are just pure fun, especially if you like hip-hop. When you need a break, check out his busking videos for sure and maybe "Love Music" parts 1-4. I will warn you, Ren got sick when he was about 19 and missed out on a lot of life, so he grew up WAY too fast in some ways and very little in others - his fun songs have some adolescent humor (d**k jokes, but hilarious if you aren't shocked).

  • @dmj4966
    @dmj49663 ай бұрын

    The back story i heard is Ren saw a story on a back page of a newspaper about a street murder and the article ended with "it's such a shame " he thought that was cold and disingenuous so wrote the first two tales, added rhe third chapter later. Th3 pt of "it's such a shame" is intentionally ironic

    I could write a book on just about every Ren song... These are a few things I like to mention sometimes. Jenny's Tale you have to ask yourself what was a 14 year old girl wearing heels and "rosy cheeks" doing at night on a road "she walked a 1000 times before". At the start of Screech's Tale, Ren starts the song by saying, "A story it starts at the end". Patrick was "missing" and Screech's GF was "Busy" because they were together. Then at the end as Ren does so often he brings it full circle and says, "A story it ends at the start" . Violate Tale - I LOVE the guitar rifts throughout the ENTIRE song. Ren so often does, he plays the part of Violate here on the bed after the rifts... (Violate waking up looking around confused as to how she got here and where is here?) With haunting/eerie hymns he sets the stage. Many catch the rewind . MANY more miss the speeding back up to real time when Ren/Violate wakes up on the table (After the fight between her and Stevie as he starts walking away). Lastly, Violet moved out at 16 into a flat paid by a "welfare scheme". It is logical to think that violet was already pregnant by this time. A teenage runaway might have a chance at being a beneficiary of this but a pregnant teenage runaway certainly has the qualifications to be granted this benefit. This was before she met Stevie who most would assume was the father of Jenny and Screech. If what was speculated was true, Stevie did some maths and figured that the numbers didn't add up, the baby wasn't his. He beats up Violet and calls her a "slut" which was quite specific when compared to usual cuss words like "bitch" or "cunt". This would also answer as to why Stevie asked "Why're you lying to me, violet?" And would make the slightly off phrase "Do you think I wanna do this, Violet" fit more consistently into the story.

    Great reaction! I'd go next with "Chalk Outlines Ren X Chinchilla Live". It highlights more of his talent, while also showing how awesome he is when collaborating with others, which will become clear the deeper you dive, After that one, I'd try something more fun and upbeat like his retake of "Losing It". But honestly, you can just See Ren, Push Play, and Enjoy! The talent is limitless! Cheers!

    @@SwiftReactions Cool! Like many here, I like the way you react to their art (I can't dissociate Sam from Ren as I do believe he represents a huge part in his/their success). Chalk outlines is a beautiful/sad song but don't expect a love story from him. Even "love story part 1 to 4" isn't really one. If you like his story telling, I believe you're ready for Money Game part 1,2,3 and then, Animal flow which is... 🤔 super strange! But anyway, he never falls into some easy work, he likes to surprise us and mix different styles. Even if playing a little melody on the guitar + singing with no lyrics (hi ren, Violet's tales...) is something he likes to start a song. Have a great...up to you 😉

    New to the channel, but I'm enjoying your discovery of Ren. As a note, I'd say your audio isn't bad, but your bit rate is low at 720p and the videos you're watching are very grainy and pixelated. It is distracting for the viewer, but your editing and effects are quite good, so if you can just up the rate you'll likely double your subs, especially adding Ren content. . . . . . The Tales are based upon a police blotter article in a paper Ren read, it was the story of a young prostitute killed by another youth during a mugging, then a responding officer killing the youth. In the article the commanding officer was quoted saying 'they were so young, it's such a shame.' 'It's such a shame' is a phrase Ren uses throughout The Tales. Some seem to miss that Violet's father 'tuck her tight, but never left the room. I'll spare you with the things he did, I'm sure her mother knew.' 'moved out at 16, a semi-detached council flat provided by a welfare scheme...' The only girl who would get a flat like that would be pregnant... she was likely pregnant by her father. Multigenerational trauma and abuse. Stevie calls her a 'little liar' and a 'fucking slut,' this could be because he figured out that she was pregnant before they got together. Levels. These videos were actually made a year apart. Originally it was just the two videos, but the third part was created to bring them back together as a way to understand the origins of the characters, the generational abuse, neglect, and trauma they led to their lives, a repeat of their parents, and the resulting continuing tragedy. Some people see 'The Tales' and think they are recent, or the 3 parts of 'Money Game' and not that they go back 3 or 4 years, and that his back catalog is so big. It is a tale of 'overnight success.' He is obsessive and rehearses endlessly and in filming does take after take, for 'Money Game Part 1' there were issues so they went all night with about 180 takes, for 'The Tales' they were done about 50 times, for Violet's tale there were 54 takes as something wouldn't go just right in the long live one take shot. They had one with rain showers at a very special moment but in review it wasn't as good, but in the used version the plane flying over stirring up the seagulls right when 'Stevie' pauses to see what he did to Violet was just as special. This is Ren very much in 'Bardcore,' he spent much of his youth going with his parents to renaissance festival and likely seeing the British pantomime plays, so this kind of performance was well ingrained for him. . . . . . The Ren Rabbit Hole is DEEP! He has a big catalog with all his busking history, his bands 'Trick The Fox' and 'The Big Push,' his collaborations with artists like Chinchilla (Daisy Matilda Bertenshaw) - she is a whole other Rabbit Hole you'll have to discover as well! Then there are his Demos, Love Music, Freckled Angels, and Sick Boi albums and a number of singles and EPs. 'Hi Ren' was the 'overnight success' trigger for Ren. Ren's backstory can be learned from a number of interviews, I'd suggest checking them out: The Charismatic Voice (Elizabeth Zaroff), Justin Hawkings Rides Again, Chris Liepe, Zach Sang Show all have good ones and will fill in some of the questions you have. Now that you're on the Ren Reactor list, look for the afterburners to kick in and you'll be at 20K subs in no time! Here is a bit of what I post to Ren reactors: Ren Erin Gill was born in Wales and moved to Brighton UK. Ren's dad got him a small beat up guitar at a flea market when he was 8 years old and Ren took it everywhere, obsessed with learning to play, and write songs, by 13 he spent most of his time learning guitar by slowing down KZread videos, and practicing piano. The only job Ren ever had was at 16 at a Coop and he was fired after throwing sprouts at a coworker. He began busking on the streets of Brighton where he picked up some money and that made him think he could do it for a living. He'd be in two bands that busk in Brighton, you can find YTs of them online, 'Trick The Fox, and 'The Big Push.' He was in school for music at Bath Spa University, and got a contract with Sony, but soon after his undiagnosed Lyme Disease was disabling and he went back to live with his mom in Wales where he spent most of his time in pain in bed with little energy to do anything. Sony agreed to let him out of his contract, he was 19. When he was feeling up to it he wrote volumes of lyrics and worked on his guitar. He says his hard drives must have 1000 songs on them. Part of his misdiagnosis (see 'Sick Boi') was bipolar and ME/CFS, he was put on many drugs including 'Diazepam' (see the video by that name), that made him hallucinate and was in part with the Lyme infection cause of psychosis and a sense of derealization from the drug he hoped would help (see 'Chalk Outlines'). He was certain he wouldn't live to 30 and at times was thinking of giving up (see 'Suic*de'), but maybe his experience with his childhood friend kept that at bay (see 'For Joe'), in trying to find answers when the doctors were making things worse, he got some information from an ME support group that suggested his mental health problems could be due to an infection. He went to a gastroenterologist with his mom and pretended to have a stomach bug that he said antibiotics worked before, he took them and his mental health improved. With that as a clue he got money together to go to an Infectious Disease doctor in Belgium who just reviewing history told him he thought he had Lyme Disease even before the test result came in, and they did show that. This gave Ren hope that he had a path, he began his road of treatment, and about age 25 he was making music again, you can find many old videos of busking on the street, a few collaborations, search under 'The Big Push,' he independently released his first album 'Freckled Angels.' Ren used a found space in the basement of a friends flat for 'Hi Ren' but the landlord came and told them to leave, they begged for more time, but they only managed 4 takes (Ren and his brilliant videographer Samuel Perry-Falvey do dozens of takes as perfectionists, and they have to as they are mostly all live one takes with no cuts or edits! Recall this when you watch 'The Tales' they did 54 takes just on the last segment Violets Tale alone in the Lanes in Brighton). After being kicked out, Ren thought 'Hi Ren' was a disaster, he wouldn't be able to fix as he was off to Canada the following week for a long course of treatment. But after editing the video he showed it to a friend who turn to him and said, 'this is going to change your life.' Ren was in Canada the next week as the number of 'Hi Ren' blew up. 'Ren Reactors' were now a thing on KZread, this drove his album sales when he dropped 'Sick Boi' and it became the number one album in the UK. . . . . . Some of Ren's works fall into a genre of storytelling that's gained the name 'Bardcore,' and one reactor actually mentioned the show 'The Witcher' and the character of 'Jasker.' A Medieval Troubadour or Bard. 'Hi Ren' was the gateway acid trip for most who found him, and then explored the pharmacopeia of his back catalog as well as the strains of his new releases. 'Hi Ren' I'd put in his 'personal journey - illness path,' while 'The Tales' are more of his social justice sort of work. Here is what I can think of for recommendations: Ren Gill Music journey - his illness path: Hi Ren Sick Boi Crutch Diazepam Depression Chalk Outlines [featuring Chinchilla] How to Be Me [featuring Chinchilla] Cross between his path and his childhood best friend: Freckled Angels Suic*de For Joe Social Justice songs: Dominos The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full) [includes the three parts including Violet's Tale} Money Game Part 1 Money Game Part 2 (Official Lyric Video) Money Game Part 3 Eden There are some 'fun' videos as well (going to need some to keep from using up all the tissues!): Power Murderer Animal Flow Love Music 1, 2, 3, 4 Girls! Uninvited Money Game Part 3 is his most ambitious production yet, most of every other video was done guerilla style (begging forgiveness rather than ask permission, using found locations - 'Hi Ren' he only managed 4 takes before the landlord kicked them out) They actually had a budget and arranged a venue for it, you can find many 'making of' videos for Money Game Part 3. This video was only released after an elaborate online collaborative puzzle solving game which you can still check out. Each video had a solution that when solved opened a new video with a new puzzle until you got to the 'Prize,' the penultimate video of 'Eden' then Money Game Part 3 dropped. Some of the videos in Money Game ARG sequence are 'Easter Eggs' themselves such as 'what did Stevie do after he attacked Violet?' Ren's 'Money Game ARG (Alternative Reality Game) contest. - - - - - Ren ~ Money Game ARG Playlist (Complete Series) Hexenkind1 27 videos 2,511 views Updated yesterday The whole money game ARG playlist with explanation videos from @RikaShae for the FULL money game EXPERIENCE (kzread.info/head/PLyK6PA3ZIW6ZTuGxd3FCTxAz1naJkQC6J) So yeah, just a tiny bit of a To Do List for catching up with Ren!
