    The best musical “siblings”. Ren has called her his sister from another mister and a female version of himself due to their similar approach to music. For me I think it shows in the fact that they both have that something special that draws you in and demands attention. To see it fully for Chinchilla, check out her live version of Fingers. This song always reminds that one of the (many) things that makes Ren so great is his ability to know exactly when to be complex, keep it simple, or even use silence to get his message across. He isn’t flexing his guitar skills in this, just playing exactly what is needed with that beautiful guitar tone. And my favourite line in this is so simple, totally devoid of all the clever metaphors that he is so good at using, but it hits soooo hard: “I’m scared of being okay cause all things change”. I think anyone who has been through any struggles can relate to that feeling of not trusting that anything good will last. You can’t just enjoy it because you’re busy worrying about how long it will last and the feeling that will come when it’s gone. And then good days just make the darkness feel so much worse because you remember the light that’s gone… Ren is so special. He keeps being so relatable that it reminds us that we’re not alone. And we will always make room for more RENegades down the Ren rabbit hole cause we all need his light in the darkness 🐰🕳️ If you want more emotional singing from Ren, please check out one of my personal favourites: Crutch feat. Bibi. It’s an older song from before he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching and beautiful.

    So, this is a one take recorded live, one of many. I think Ren only uses particular different facets of his varied musical palette when he performs. Ren is 34, and he grew up with a mother who is a vocal coach, so he has had at least some vocal training. Also, he was a producer, a street performer, a member of several bands, a signed artist, all through the years leading up to his illness, and now his current material.. Perhaps look into his full catalog to get a broader picture of Ren. You won't be disappointed.

    I’m not talking about vocal control. And I’m definitely giving him huge credit 😂 what I’m talking about is literally the difference between being trained and not. Either way, anyone can be a great singer. The dropped jaw thing is only about using less tension in the voice. A little less stress on the cords. That’s all.

  • @67goat

    @67goat

    @@7DeadlyBananas That too. He is pretty intentional about his jaw and throat control as well as vocal. Also, as pointed out by someone else, his mother is a vocal coach. I don't think he studied with her, but he certainly has her as a resource to get information from. He also basically in his interview with Chris Liepe that he focuses on emotive singing rather than technique because often technique results in a more sterile performance.

    Great reaction. I saw someone else comment on this, and I don't know how true it is, but they saw the mic on Ren's shirt, but no mic on Chinchilla, so it maybe that's she's projecting her voice so loud, that it's coming through on Ren's mic alone.

  • @AllRandomOutcomes

    @AllRandomOutcomes

    2 ай бұрын

    Chinchilla has a mic on, its visible when she's crouching and is positioned on her right hand shoulder in a similar place to Ren's. Chinchilla's mic pack's gain seems to be turned up high, as you can hear Chinchilla's nails catching her right earring as she runs her hand over her head; also the noise level is higher on her pack than on Ren's. It's possible this was done to allow Chinchilla to sing her intro section more softly than Ren's as a stylistic choice. When the camera pans round Ren's back, Chinchilla has pulled her hair over the mic just before standing, possibly to muffle the pickup a bit as she starts to sing the remainder of the song louder (the mic lead is still visible at various points). There is also a camera mic to pickup sound. There's pictures of Ren and Chinchilla rehearsing the song in the live setting on their socials but using handheld mics, enabling them to plan and decide how best to perform the live song.

  • @banzy3

    @@AllRandomOutcomes Some great observations there. If she intentionally covered the mic with her hair to muffle it, that would certainly illustrate the level of planning and forethought that goes into these productions. Thanks for sharing.

    talking about not ''perfect'' singing and how he projects emotions is exactly why he reminds me of Johnatan Davis from Korn. its the same passion to deliver a accurate emotional feeling bending the rules of the ''perfect'' singing. if all artists would sing perfect pitch music would be very boring cause there is no emotions then.

I get what you're saying as I used to sing. You should really see Ren's interview with Chris Liepe as they talk about Ren's approach to his vocals. Either that or a reaction from him. Ren can sing technically at a high level. In a live performance in particular, he goes into a flow state. It's very different most. Swan Song by the Big Push is an example of more technical vocals. There's others as well.

    For something fun, Ren convinced Chinchilla to go busking. She’s performed as an opener for Sting, but singing in the street terrified her. They do a version of Sexual Healing that will make you forever hear it as a duet in your head going forward. 💜 BTW, she said she was so glad she conquered the fear & did it. She suffers from stage fright, which is why she puts on a “character” while singing. Putting on her long nails is her ritual to get into character.

  • @yasha.hartberg

    I think at least part of the way Ren sings vowels comes down to his accent. However that might be, this performance becomes even more impressive from a technical perspective when you realize that Chinchilla doesn't appear to have a mic. If so, then she's constantly modulating her voice to account for her distance from Ren's mic.

    He said, in an interview, that he didn’t use her as an instructor, being a teenager, not wanting his mom to teach. But I can’t help feeling some techniques rubbed off. Like: Ren, open your mouth wide, sing from your belly, not your throat, that sort of thing. He claims to have learned vocal skills online.

    I’m pretty sure chinchilla was on the voice UK so I assume would have had some kind of training on that.

    Many singers with no training have made it far with their careers. The kind of training I’m talking about is just technique building, not learning how to sing. More like learning how to do some things a little easier and improve the longevity of one’s voice. But REN isn’t singing heavy metal or anything 😂 or playing massive sets on long tours. So it’s really just a technicality.

    Chinchilla has stated in her interviews that she has had vocal training since her teens, and still has a vocal coach on her team (like most high ability/tier artists). She also gained a BA (Hons) First from the Academy of Contemporary Music (London) shortly before her debut single release back in 2019 (Elements); so likely has training in many areas related to the music making artistry (performance, production, songwriting, business management) to enable her natural abilities to the most. Based on a music press article her first collab release, one with the Estonian DJ NOEP, was developed after meeting at a song writting workshop they attended. Although, I don't think the Voice provides that level of specific support (at least not in the UK), Chinchilla did release a BTS video on her socials showing her working with her own vocal coach on her Virtual Insanity retake that she sang in the callback round (showing the new section she wrote for the song that wasn't aired in the show). Chinchilla's song Fingers (Live) for Hunger TV, on her YT channel, is a great demonstration of her using a range of vocal skills, stylings and techniques. Her song Cut You Off showcases her ability to switch styles/genre's at pace and apply vocal stylings to keep a song flowing and sonically interesting.

    @@AllRandomOutcomes wow she’s a master of her craft in all areas by the sounds of it. No wonder her and Ren work so well together I bet they are both perfectionists (well we know Ren is). Thanks for all the info I’ll have to have a dive into her and get stuff a bit more than what’s just on the surface.

    There's a great interview with The Fairy Voicemother and her where they go into pretty much detail about her vocals and training. Well worth seeing. The interview she has with Chris Liepe is focused more on her, personally, than the ins and outs of music. Her accent is delightful, and she's actually a bit shy. She goes by Chinchilla, but her real name is Daisy.
