The System Shock Remake is a Must-Play (Sponsored)

While this video on the System Shock remake is sponsored by the game in question, the team were adamant that I retain full creative control over the project, with zero pressure to spin things or be anything other than honest-essentially just asking me to make a regular Writing on Games video like I normally would, just on a particular game.
This approach isn't free from ethical concerns, of course, but at the very least I can present you this information for you to process the information in the video how you see fit. As I say in the video, coverage on this game seems to have been very positive generally, so I'd recommend checking out videos from other creators as well to get a full understanding of what you're getting into. Hope that's all clear enough!
---
I'm a relative newcomer when it comes to the System Shock games, so when the opportunity arose to fight my way through the cyber-labyrinth of the Citadel in the form of Nightdive Studios recent remake of the original, I was curious to see how they might bring the series into the modern era. Turns out, the numerous subtle changes they've made mark a really respectable effort to maintain the mechanical and systemic identity of a game that helped put the immersive sim on the map. What it lacks in hand holding, it more than makes up for in every detail, visual or otherwise, conveying tone, narrative and atmosphere that goes way beyond the scope of the original-that, and it's just a complete blast to actually play. Let's talk about why in this analysis of the System Shock remake!
0:00 - Intro/disclosure
1:16 - This is still System Shock, just polished
5:03 - How upgraded visuals tell System Shock's story

I unapologetically got lost for like 2 hours trying to find my way. I ended up skipping a floor, missing a key item, jumping 2 steps, missing a key on the first floor, and more. And you know what? I loved every fucking second of it. Matter of fact, I'm gonna go keep playing. Gotta wrap up the flight deck.

I’m very glad you mentioned the stark contrast between SHODAN’s infinite ramblings about how inferior humanity is while gameplay wise you’re tony hawk skating around with a laser sword tearing apart her forces. It’s a huge charm point of the original game and one of the more important tones to keep in this game. It could’ve been very easy to just lean more into survival horror as the direction but it keeps the fun part of mastering the systems intact.

This was the best game I played all year, and this is racked up against my first playthrough of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. I LOVED System Shock. I was never a System Shock fan until 10 days from this game's release. I had heard of the game and their legacy and played Bioshock, Dead Space, and Prey but when I saw the trialer for this game I fell in love with the setting, the art style, the villain. This game is PERFECT to me. It feels almost like it was made just for me due to how much I loved this game. I was never a System Shock fan before this game, but I'm glad to have become one. Thank you, Night Dive for this incredible reinvisioning of a classic I never gave the time of day until now.

I played this game without much expectations, but was curious due to positive reviews. Well, one weekend later and all I can say is: I love this game! It is scary good and am baffled just how well this almost 3 decades old game holds up, released the year I was born. I can see the connection to Bioshock and Half life or the modern Prey. That, but the game is also just fun to play, controls nicely, good gun handling and character movement. It was both terrifying but also exciting to get the impression that the game makes it MY responsibility to be able to complete it. You can save scum as much as you want, but you can definitely end up softlocking yourself and if you miss some important clue or run out of resources at an important story beat you might just have to start a new playthrough. On the flip side it made progressing just soo incredibly rewarding - victory was not guaranteed. You really just win because you plan ahead and observe your surroundings. Both the original developers as well as the team of people who put in years of hard work to bring this remake to life have done an amazing job. Most fun I've had with a game in a long time.

Current issue: The controller support is pretty terrible and while on SteamDeck it’s not a massive issue - they need to rework this BIG TIME for consoles release - currently navigating inventory is atrocious. Esp when trying to manage junk to sell or even use items. Esp as you noticed - the game doesn’t pause when using the inventory - they def need take the controller supports seriously before the console release. Small annoyance: Melee feedback is bad, not that they needed to make the melee better - but it lacks any substantial feedback when hitting enemies. There’s times I thought it didn’t connect. Really feels like a bad tech demo - better hit animation and more sound feedbacks would help a lot. There’s a demo - def recommended it as it’s very substantial.

I’ve discussed this elsewhere with friends and other folks, but if you do decide to try out the original SS1, I highly suggest taking a cursory look at the Ultima Underworlds, as well. People often discuss the original under the perspective of an FPS or an immersive sim (like its sequel), but it really has waaay more in common with the two dungeon crawlers that came before it. It’s one of those strange clashes-of-genre that stems from how the industry’s changed over the years.

I've been a fan of immersive Sims for a long time, but I never played either of the original system shocks. Seeing the roots from which one of my favorite genres sprung has completely reframed my perception of the genre. These games have so much respect for themselves and their players and after years of being locked into a repetitive and constrained gameplay loop by modern games I played immersive Sims in the same manner I would play other games. But this game made me realize that a good immersive sim frees players from the confines of modern gaming and inspires creativity and intentional action by consistently rewarding it. I'm going to replay every game inspired by system shock from bioshock to prey with new eyes. I pray this game does well so we can see these incredibly talented devs remake system shock 2 which is mind-blowingly universally considered better than the original. This could singlehandedly spark the rebirth of the immersive Sim genre in the same way it sparked it into existence. Amazing game.

Small clarification for the intro, as you've said "the Trioptimum guys bust you immediately as you hack into their system". That's not true. You start out with the PC literally saying "bruteforcing password", which means that you are already hacking into their servers for some time, since we don't know when that started. Could've been hours or just the minute that we follow the Triop drone in the intro thats surveying your apartment. Overall great game, I'm having a blast.

Incredible game. A love letter to old school design. No hand holding, intricate level design, high player agency and respect. It's the antithesis of modern mainstream open world third person generic gaming, and I'm so grateful that it exists. Bravo, Night Dive. (But please fix the melee weapons and add mod support!!)

I’m really digging the remake, but it isn’t leaving the same impression the original did on me. That isn’t from a place of nostalgia, either, as I only played the original for the first time in 2016. I just loved the cold feeling of it and the awesome soundtrack. This remake feels more in line with System Shock 2, which is a better game than the original, but that had a totally different vibe.

I did play the demo they published on Steam, haven't played the original SS1, played SS2 and quite liked it. I really like the aesthetics of the remake and they seemed to have stayed faithful to the original. The thing that makes it borderline unplayable for me is the... clunkiness? Attacking feels unresponsive and the movement is a bit off. When I think about old first person games like Doom or Blood (and the remaster by Nightdive Studios) I think about how good the controls feel, which seems to be missing here. Anybody else had this issue?

@@KingSigy Sure, I don't expect it to be an FPS. But there's this thing called "game feel" and if I press a button but the game sometimes doesn't react or the reaction is delayed too much, it feels bad. As I mentioned previously, I played SS2 and didn't have this issue.

  • @KingSigy

    @KingSigy

@@ludisnemo887 That sounds more like a hardware issue, though. I haven't encountered anything in the game where my inputs aren't getting picked up. I understand that the lead pipe and wrench have some wind-up that wasn't in the original System Shock, but it's consistent with every swing. I'm not saying this to insult you, either. I genuinely don't know what the issue might be. I assumed you were expecting this to be a fast-paced action title, but I suppose something else is going on.

@@TheOrian34 not to mention this SS remake is completely a labor of love. The original SS was nowhere near as financially successful as the original Deadspace or the 60 versions of RE4, so Nightdive probably dont expect this game to be as big of a financial success but they made it anyway. Dont get me wrong, I loved the other remakes too, but this remake is just so important for the industry
