System Shock Remake Review | It's Real (And Really Good)

Ойындар

The System Shock Remake actually exists. It's Really good.
The System Shock Remake is finally here. Yes, it's real. The full game is here. I finished it. I was suspicious at first with the game's small install size - just under 9 GB. I was expecting to open the elevator to research and have the game cut to Skyrim. There seemed to be more iterations of the medical-level demo than editions of Skyrim. It was a running joke about how the game was keep getting pushed back.

Nightdive Studios did themselves no favors with handling the Kickstarter and communicating delays. Don't worry, I"'ll touch on that at the end of the video.
How is the System Shock Remake? Really good, if underwhelming in places. It's faithful to the mazelike map design of the original. It keeps the dungeon-crawler feel. It doesn't hold your hand and requires you to pay attention - at least on the default difficulty. Something that flies in the face of modern games. Its changes to the cyberspace sections are a welcome one, for the most part.
On the visual front, it's more mixed. The enemy designs are well done. I found the pixelated look on surfaces to be an interesting choice. Some level environments look great, while some areas suffer from the shiny Unreal Engine look. The lighting was better than I was expecting. There are issues with visual clarity.
There are key areas where the game underwhelms. The weight of combat, which has long been a complaint, still lacks weight. Some due to feedback, but also due to sound design. Looking Glass Studios were masters in sound design. Here? It's lacking. Audio queues from enemies are so quiet I had to strain to hear them. The music tracks are well composed but lack that uptempo energy the series is known for. While more of an ambient feel, it's still far too quiet in the mix, even when maxed out.
Overall I'm very positive about the System Shock Remake, but it's held back by issues I was hoping would've received addressing by now.

My guess regarding the drawn out animations is that they're going for the immersive part of immersive sim. The literal defnition, not necessarily what it means for the genre. I, for one, appreciate those little touches. It'd be nice if they add an option to disable these repetitive animations, though.

@@DeltaAssaultGaming why? So the game will still look outdated in 5 years? Having a style all its own instead of following the trend of bloated, hard drive consuming games that lack personality was the better choice and most players will be grateful that they didn’t have to dump another game just to play a remake of a nearly 30 year old one. Part of me wants the 100+GB version with insane textures and terrible frame rate but I’ll still be happy with this version given that the team has put out a project they were passionate about in a gaming landscape full of cash grabs so broken that most people can’t play them for at least a month after release.

With the music in the first game, my take on it is that it's great music but seems like an odd fit tonally. The best example is probably the medical theme song. The music's vibe is actually very welcoming, and it draws imagery of "shopping at a store you like" or "arriving at your workplace when you have a job you like". This is an odd choice for a level where you wake up in an abandoned hospital onboard a space station controlled by a creepy-as-hell AI.

THIS. So many people complain about the remake not having the og music, but the remake's makes way more sense tonally and it always will. The original sounded far to energetic for what the game truly was. "Omg I'm all alone on a space station controlled by an ai that turned the crew into monsters. Let me bob my head to this epic music while I try to survive." Just silly

The recycler concept kinda reminds of Prey from Arkcane being able to take your junk items and swap them out for something more useful ie neuromods, ammunition, weapons and etc. The limited inventory is also, in my opinion, a nice touch. Especially for those who played SystemShock 2 are already familiar with it; it does add a level of urgency and critical thinking. Kinda like the classic Resident evil games, which you had to strategize on what items you should be collecting plus having an "item box" available does solve the limited inventory. Yes back tracking will be something that people might have to adjust, but you already had to do that in the original.

07:21 - that comment is pretty amusing to me. I've read an old "plan" file from John Carmack, where, up to the Quake 3 engine, the longest running visual complaint he got from players, were the "looney tunes effect". Where interact-able objects and map entities within the world could be easily discerned due to the difference in lighting. That happens because pre-baking shadow and lighting passes between the world itself and brush entities(part of maps that are turned into active objects, like a door, a lever, a moving platform, or a breakable window), are done differently as a means of simplifying/optimizing lighting calculations(remember the hardware of the era). The common visual telltales are; Brush entities have more simplified shading. Brush entities does not have, nor casts a shadow at all. General entities(like player and enemy characters, weapon and item pickups, world models) are lighted differently, most common real-time lighting system at the time was the technique called "goraud shading". In short; incredibly crude, very simple, but hey, it's the best way to light objects in game that doesn't melt your 8mb graphics card. It's why he's incredibly proud of being able to finally implement, unified, per-pixel lighting on the Doom 3 engine. The idea that the world itself, and the various interact-able things within that world, are now both lighted correctly, and in real-time.

I think the remake went for a scarier, sinister vibe. Thus relying more on silence and ambient sounds, I also find the soundtrack and audio logs to be a great improvement despite the soundtrack being a little low; the original audio has not aged well at all. Overall pretty happy with how it turned out, could have been worse, could have been better, but a solid installment nonetheless.

4:30 The pacing might seem off, but if you look at the laptop the hacker is working from, you can see a program already running trying to brute-force a password into the Trioptimum network. With the hover drone intro sequence, it's likely that when it pans into the hacker's apartment that they already backtracked the source of the infiltration and had already sent cyborg assassins.

I'm actually alright with the length to the ressurection in the remake. It gives the player time to 'cool off' and think about how (and why) they snuffed it, rather than simply barrel out of the respawn and back into the fight. I appreciate it can be frustrating though, I had a few moments where I was a bit too slow with purging radiation or a biohazard damage tick and was just waiting to respawn. The audiolog animation started to get annoying towards the end as well. The audio logs fell off a cliff late game though, so... eh.

The level design reminds me of the best parts of the original Resident Evil (yes I'm aware system shock came out first) with it's fully explorable world, backtracking to previous areas, and lack of directions, but with the mechanics and systems of an immersive sim like Deus Ex. System Shock created the immersive sim genre, and it still might be the very best of them all. All it needed was a fresh coat of paint.

As someone who did not play the original, I really enjoyed the more ambient music. I remember playing the demo and really enjoying the dark and creepy atmosphere, then comparing it to gameplay of the original and being completely jarred. I guess it's just preference, but I think I prefer the darker approach of the remake. It makes exploring the station a lot more unsettling.

Hmm... I'll have to check those cons of yours when the full thing is out tomorrow... I forgot this was even coming out tomorrow. I played the demo quite a bit, even streaming it live on the channel to show how it runs on various hardware... runs great while looking better than a lot of other new games, of which typically themselves run pretty iffy. Or so to say, lots of lesser looking games come out these days playing far worse. I don't recall any complaints with combat or audio of my own, and looking at the videos, I still don't... so, I guess I'll see how the fully cooked version seems come tomorrow, when I'm back to work again... so, ehhh... maybe I'll download and install tomorrow. But probably won't get a chance to play it until the next weekend at best. Why oh why they couldn't just release it on a FRIDAY, giving the weekend for players to actually enjoy it, I have no idea. Instead actually waiting until most folk's long holiday weekend is over, and releasing on the first working Tuesday after. Nice... tactical... lol. But, I'm excited for sure, can't wait to play the whole game in this new, beautiful, user friendly, FAR UPDATED coat of paint and mechanics. I've been awaiting this title for a long freaking time at this point. Something that stood out to me in regard to your critique's though... you take issue with environmental items you can interact / need to interact with not being super obvious. Well... I dunno man... I'm of two minds on this one myself... I absolutely HATE when games outline interactable items, or make them glow. That just looks so freaking stupid, takes you entirely out of the world, and reminds you the whole time that this is just a game you're playing. Not a world you're in... I always turn those things off when the game lets me... I suppose though, if you have no idea what you're looking for, it could be an issue. But, that's likely only due to our being coddled for so long. Back in the 16bit days and immediately onward, games were cryptic af, yet we still figured things out all the time, every time. Even without internet and communication with other players no less... So, I'm pretty sure if you keep your mission goals in mind, you'd be able to find the items required to interact with, even if they aren't glowing as if they sustained a Chernobyl splosion point blank. But, maybe they should have a game option where you could turn that on... toddler mode perhaps.

The problem with pickup clarity is that it’s system shock. A lot of key items are like, door buttons, small key cards, things on specific corpses or on specific shelves. In the original it’s totally manageable to find them since they’re sprites. When they’re flat on the ground and actually their size, it’s not hard to see why people miss them entirely. They added the head lamp to medical instead of maintenance and I totally missed it because it’s just a small light on a shelf. Door buttons are now mostly levers or look exactly like the wall itself instead of being distinctly big orange buttons.

Was anybody else incredibly disappointed when they opened up the game today and find that the menu system, customization key binds etc.. graphical menu all the things basically we're essentially a stock standard version of what was a completely unfunctional menu that had really cool sounding options.. key bindings that has achieved the minimum standard of being able to bind them now... but not to some buttons... like mouse four and five your thumb buttons... You know fancy graphic design and productivity kind of attack like that obviously, clearly not worth bothering with.. like thumb buttons... I will say that it seems that... the the way it would fight you seems to be less fighty... Like for instance when I asked it politely to use full screen it seemed like it wanted to do that and it was okay with that.. and it seemed to be okay with any of my custom super resolutions.. not at first of course.. but at the very least it didn't have Rube Goldberg workarounds like re4 does to make sure that you can never run the screen size bigger than it thinks you could run the screen size by the desktop standard.. except it just didn't have anything else like the unfunctional menu it had in the original unreal demo.. A menu I assume it's designed for ultra gas lighting? Because it would tell you that you changed the option it just wouldn't change any option LOL although sometimes it would delete the option from the registry.. so it doesn't do that now from what I can tell.. we've achieved stock unreal basic competency now... Which... Like you can't even rebind your inventory.. so it's it's not even that so much as it's.. I don't know maybe design for hybrid one half keyboards that don't have a number key row? Is it it's either so far ahead of its time or it's.. completely unacceptably something that they've known that they needed to do and have not been able to do successfully every single release that they've put out since the unity release.. which from what I understand didn't suffer from some of these problems at least.. but every unreal version certainly has... LOLespite the despite the track record of not doing this at all and not seeming to care.. despite how absurd that is especially for this particular studio given their day job has been to go through and add these things into older games like literally that's that's been like their primary focus and that's that's like the big thing they did to bring out the remaster of the original.. rebindable controls go figure! Like never mind that all the cool stuff you could do in the original is is largely missing for the most part, replace with some really bare Bones but at least acceptably bare Bones LOL.. would still puts it ahead of most games.. Except I'm still sad that I can't roller blade down a hallway, while diving into prone then leaning out throwing a grenade and moving the filing cabinet.. although maybe I can move the filing cabinet? But if they didn't even fix the menu.. and for what I understand it doesn't even have surround sound support.. I could be wrong on that but I have a suspicious feeling it's stereo in 2023 on unreal 4.. I'll test that further but.. seems as if the mixing hadn't been mixed again.. which makes it a mixed bag of sound, which seemed to follow a really good design.. except by mix they thought that meant throw in blender.. I'm really curious to see what the the hyper fixation has been on.. to a point where they've had a demo that was basically unplayable if you had a custom resolution, and you couldn't even adjust resolution LOL initially.. you couldn't remind your controls you basically couldn't use any of the menu functions.. and that's been the case since the original unreal demo when they switched.. and they've had so many different releases of it where they've not fixed any of this.. including the final demo! Where they hadn't fixed any of it at all.. fortunately they released the final final demo where they fixed some of it and then just got rid of most of it.. and that's what we're seeing today... It's like this is this is night dive.. this is this is a studio that their job is literally to make titles that did not have proper interface and functionality on modern systems have all that.. it's like you need a night dive studio remaster of the night dive studio game.. I'm hoping they actually do the mod support thing because that could fix a lot of this.. you don't usually see it with unreal titles.. but it can be done and they did mention it at one point.. but night dive has been a textbook example of gaslighting.. and that switch to a discord server that's private so essentially anybody with issues is screaming into a void to know you know response especially on the steam forms for years.. like it looked like the scamiest of scams like they didn't even update the website until just recently.. and this was after a promise that they were doing this open development thing you know which is yeah okay that's a nightmare I get that.. but you know what.. do y'all not have thumb buttons up in Vancouver or something like that? Is it like a company philosophy where the thumb is like ableist or something? Clearly you have number keys because you have an entire function row bound to them, that can't be bound to anything else.. which is why I have an f night dive ahk that I have to run every time I've had run the demo.. requiring me to come up with a custom bind that keys to the number.. and then I have to to invent a thumb then it correlates to if I wanted to do that which I usually do.. Seriously even like Japanese exports that furiously disdain using scary keys like the cap locks, or other very normal keys used in gaming LOL or on keyboards.. even they have extremely basic.. but still there at all.. thumb button support now... congratulations you have achieved consoleport status on a game that doesn't even have a console Port yet.

Game dropped and it actually works on launch. They have proven the silence was in good faith. I'd rather them silently working on the game to deliver a finished product over any AAA studio over presenting a game only for it to either not represent the marketed game, or releases a buggy busted mess on launch that takes months to finish via updates and patches. Not to sound mean or rude, but this very mindset is why AAA games are the way they are. Devs being forced to meet strick deadlines to put out a product that simply isn't done. Nightdive are passionate and clearly knew what they were doing better than many others.
