I've never cut my hair or beard in my life and I'm a 37 year old man. Its very long lush and all black, runs past my bum. Last night I had a dream that it was half grey. I analyzed it closely and then accepted my mortality. Today my friend sent me this video without me telling him about my dream. So neat. Thanks for your interpretation.

I made a small mistake in the video, I mention the Son of Man having white hair, but it is in fact The Ancient of Days who is presented as having white hair in the book of Daniel. Enjoy.

The video made me think of this too. I wonder if society's obsession with covering up gray hair reflects a deep unconscious urge to refuse to add colors to our hair. The more colors you add, the closer you get to white, which is of course the combination of all colors. You don't get white hair in a safe space!

it might be because we're afraid of death and grey hair is a sign of death and dying or on the flipside its a sign of wisdom, which we often lack nowadays covering your white hair with colors masks these fears and shortcomings on a shallow level

I'm 40 and I have a lot of white. I let it be but recently began ritualisticly (sp?) dying it with henna and other herbs. The white looks stunning, dyed, against my dark hair. I think a lot of times it's attitude. White hair is beautiful for sure.

So when a military member gets a haircut, to remain within standards, it firstly fulfills the hygienic and the practical martial needs. Than the haircut is also a microcosm of renewing ones oath of enlistment, the voluntary shedding of youths glory to embrace discipline and death.

@@lausdeo4944 Hey man I’m not gonna criticize your journey because we all have different paths and mindsets but me personally I grew up in a religious family and could no longer continue in ignorance of how Christianity blatantly stole majority of the tales in the Bible from other cultures long before it was even conceived. The character of Jesus, majority of religious people don’t even understand the point he was trying to get across all you need to do is read the whole book of John to understand it all. Everyone was unconscious to who they were and the Pharisees couldn’t stand that he knew who he was even when he was trying to tell them who they were it went in one ear and out the other. Now if you are a believer which I assume you are cause your defending the Bible I presume you take it “literal” so if you take it literal you absolutely cannot question or try to interpret anything in it because you take everything that’s said in it as fact. Jesus told them who they were as well himself and said it plainly in John 10:34 he said that they were GODS. Religious folk will try to come up with different assumptions and arguments to that statement and read to deep into it instead of simply accepting what he’s saying they’ll say “he just calls them that because they’re human judges because they enforce the law” why are trying to dissect the scripture? If your a believer you believe everything word for word in the Bible no need for interpretation. The TRUE purpose of religion is to get people to awaken to who they TRULY are that’s the real mystery behind all the sacred texts and religions that this world and the humans that created it are trying to get across but because most people are unconscious to this they will never come to understand this. You think if those people who crucified the character of Jesus were conscious to who they were and who he was trying to tell them they were that they would’ve treated him that way? Absolutely not. He tells everyone who they are all throughout the scripture but because the religious leaders knew most people would never understand the deeper purpose behind the scriptures they knew it could be used for the benefit to control the masses for generations, they wouldn’t of took out particular books from it if they weren’t aware of this fact. I respect your views because I was the same way but I inquire to use your brain more as you continue your life journey you have vast knowledge within you to figure things out for yourself. God isn’t outside or separate from you and it has nothing to do with new age this is about utilizing the mind fully without the construct of religion holding you back.

Interesting stuff. I'm 28 and I started growing my hair out a few months after I turned 26. I had never done it before because my hair is very thick, curly, and hard to manage. I was not in a very good place when I decided to start growing out my hair. My goal is to cut it when I become debt free in a few months symbolizing the end of a chapter and the beginning of a new one. I really enjoy your videos Jonathan!

Reminds me of newlywed women and new moms cutting their hair as an expression of transition. And not wanting the kid to pull it all out, of course. This also makes a lot of sense of the shame people feel about hair loss. My grandma was prone to lose a lot with each baby and was wearing wigs by the time she was 40. I appear to have inherited the hair loss from her and find the modern comforts singularly uncomfortable -"just be yourself, this is your journey, love yourself!" Well, obviously I love myself. That's why I'm sad to lose my glory, haha.

I just watched Tangled. Look at her extremely long hair. It's magical and glorious (it heals people even). And it's also a huge burdensome weighty manifestation of her naivete of the outside world. Pretty obvious I suppose. I wonder if I've gotten all of it. I think I figured out the symbolism of hair within the last year mostly already. But I'll watch again. Its late over here.

I always enjoyed the quote: "Men have their cars, women have their hair." It reminds me of the story in the Bible when the women use their hair to clean the feet of (I think) Jesus and the Apostles (it's been a while since I've read it). A symbol of respect and humility.

Something both me and my wife have experienced is the cutting of hair as a form of purification, literally severing the past. Hair, because it takes so long to grow, represents the past. Cutting in this way can be seen as being born again, baptised.

True whenever I cut my hair I feel energized and re born. But..i donno maybe by carring the burden of the past and the burden of our ancestors we gain wisdom, strength, status and power. I also realized when tying and braiding your hair it you feels way better, you feel strong and focused, as having your hair loose can cause thoughts to be distorted.

@@poesiforankor6349 Absolutely he was. His invented languages and maps, as well as hobbits and orcs for example. He took inspiration from different mythologies but blended in elements and ideas all his own, which is why modern fantasy tropes largely stem from him. Rowling, on the other hand, is highly derivative though still enjoyable. I take it you haven't engaged much with Tolkien's work.

lol. Yes, I know my Tolkien. There fore I also know that he deliberately based almost all his writings on certain mythologies, the northern myths most recognisable. If you want to, you can absolutely say that he "ripped everything off" these ancient stories. You shouldn't though. Intertext is not stealing. Rowling isn't as ambitious as Tolkien, that's for sure, but the fact that she is borrowing archetypical tropes from Tolkien isn't something negative, it's neat if anything. The whole story about the ring, btw, is a "rip off" from Wagner's The ring of the Nibelung - just to take a single example, there is plenty more. For someone who knows how literature works, those intertexts and connections are sublime and a delight to find, but I take it you haven't engaged much in literature studies...

Romans saw long hair and beards as uncivilised,hence why the name barbarian has a relation with the word beard.You talked about the benefit of having long hair,but in western culture it seems like we have another perspective about hair.I would like to know more about why the romans see cutted hair as civilised and educated.

hair is also the last part of the body to degrade with death, get this weird juxtaposition of it as whats dead and what survives death. also is one of the most powerful fetish objects, seems to automaticaly carry much of the 'life' of the person it belonged to (hence the rituals around burning it, as well as all the voodooish rituals involving it). this ties into cutting the hair as a rebirth, quite literally cutting away the life lived as it was grown. this also relates to growing it out - that no part of the life lived in that timeframe is to b removed (a kind of symbol of purity). notice too that this quality sticks even to garments made of hair - a wool coat seems to carry much more of the life of its wearer than cotton/linen, to the degree that it can b viscerally uncomfortable (wearing anothers clothes always kind of has this, tho it does seem to b more pronounced with certain materials).

Samson was turned over to slavery after his betrayal by delilah. Of which his hair grew back while being a slave and was chained to a pillar. He tore down the pillar killing himself and all those above him. This is the same story of men now. And we, as men, will be happy to tear those pillars down because of the betrayal of women...any woman reading this should at least be concerned with the parallels of this and feminism of today. Do you like electricity? Damming men is not going to give you it. Do you like roads to drive on? Do you like the housing you live in? Cut our hair and see where it gets you.

When a light is too bright, it impairs and obscures clarity of vision. Such so the glory of others (or rather the glory of the other.)

Great video, it's especially seen as well in the Catechism of new Orthodox Christians being baptized. They would shave all the hair, sometimes on their entire body and wear white to consecrate unto God your glory. As well as taking oaths and when the oath was completed they would shave the head and offer unto God, even if it was not a Nazarene vow! Pretty cool stuff. Thank you for your time in the video!

Hi Jonathan, I've been dwelling on an idea for months now, and was wondering if you had any insight on it. I think it has implications for understanding transgenderism. There's this link between "transformation" and sexuality that feels very intuitive. My intuition for this is that in media, I've seen "transformations" that make me feel uncomfortable (especially as a child), and I believe it's because there's a deeply implicit sexuality to it. You can even go as far as considering weird fetishes on Tumblr, but we won't go there. :) In some sense, having sex is a process of transformation - you're basically "assuming the form" of that person not just experientially per-say, but by producing a child with them who is part you and part them. There's also an innate desire of the masculine to appreciate the feminine and vice-versa - the ultimate culmination of this is in _obtaining_ the feminine/masculine, which we could basically describe as sex. You _have_ that person, you've unified, you're "complete." Now what if this yearning for the opposite is misplaced? This yearning is fulfilled by transformation, after all, so what if you could just _become_ what you yearn for? Then you'd have it and be complete as one person. Instead of having and appreciating the traits in another person, and all the liability that comes with that, you'd just have them in yourself. Hence a motivation for transgenderism - you _transform_ into the opposite sex, and attempt to fulfill that innate yearning for masculinity/femininity that you lack. You're "complete" in and of yourself (or so it would seem.) There's other aspects of transformation that I'm still trying to wrap my head around - in media (especially anime), sometimes a character will be so enraged, let's say, that they suddenly lose all form and become a twisted monster, or a caricature of themselves (Ryuko from Kill la Kill). Perhaps it's a combination of chaos and being overtaken by a "tool." Other times, this transformation is a form of nirvana, or just sheer chaotic power (Goku from DBZ, Aang from Avatar.) Often times, only the love interest can rescue the transformed from their enraged state. In any case, we all seem to just accept these transformations intuitively, as if there was nothing strange about it (though obviously it emotionally affects us.) While these don't feel implicitly sexual, I'm wondering if these are more than just tangentially related. Thanks for all your hard work, understand you can't reply to everything. Would love to see more symbolism in media!

Interesting. Have you seen any of the lectures on Genesis by Jordan Peterson? In his talk of Adam and Eve, he presents a hypothesis (made by some ancient people- can't remember who) that the original creation of man was perhaps a hermaphrodite creature, then separated on formation of Eve, with the ideal "arrangement" decided to be that man and woman come back together again as one (in spirit?) through marriage, but not as one physical entity. You should check it out.

I was just reading St. Ambrose "On the Holy Spirit" where he talks about Samson's hair, that his hair had no power in itself, but so long as he kept it he was being faithful to the vow and therefore had the Spirit of God with him, and how God regards the beauty of the interior (Book II, introd., vv.14-16).

The emission of light as either self-revelation or self-concealment is fascinating. God's first creative word (logos) is light, which can also be understood as his own glory, the manifestation and externalization of his inner being. Speech, especially creative speech, seems to be a kind of threshold between self and other which can act as either a barrier between self and other or a bridge between self and other. The devil also "masquerades as an angel of light" so as to conceal his inner motives. I am wondering, then, if the biblical emphasis on "faith" or "trust" reflects that to "place one's faith" in something is to believe that its external self corresponds to its inner self. "By faith we understand that everything visible has been made by what is invisible." To place one's faith in a being whose inner self is discontinuous with its outer self is to be deceived, etc.

Every time my brother comes back from Sydney to his hometown, one of his best friends convinces him to adopt a weird hairstyle. Last time around, he convinced my brother to turn his long hair into a mullet. Recently, my brother shaved all his hair off, except for the back of his head. (He then shaved the rest of it off and made himself completely bald.) I'm convinced that his friend keeps doing this as a symbolic expression of envy over my brother's popularity. By persuading my brother to shave his hair into weird patterns, or to get rid of it altogether, his friend is symbolically destroying what he cannot have. A similar thing happened when my brother convinced our parents to buy him an expensive computer. His friend tagged all over it in silver metallic permanent marker, dishevelling what he could not possess outright. Destroying something grants an ephemeral power over that thing. I can't help associating this with a common practice in rural Australia: cutting someone's hair or shaving his eyebrows while he is unconscious from drunkenness. Calls to mind both Samson and Noah.

Very interesting, it seems you may be right - "the hairs of the head are all numbered."

A Catholic friend of mine began wearing a chapel veil and for the life of me I could not understand the point. I just initially saw it as traditional sexism towards the free expression of women. This video has helped me to begin to understand, but it's like I'm looking at a puzzle with a single missing piece. There's something I'm just not fully understanding. Although you are not Catholic, could you do a video on the chapel veil and contrast it with why men do not cover their heads?

I think there’s a concept of “meekness”, where one is capable but refuses to misuse that capacity. Strength, power, beauty, etc. I think that women covering their hair in certain ceremonies falls in line with this. Obviously, what makes it desirable is that it is done voluntarily, because it speaks to the character of the person.

It doesn't have to be a veil. It can be a scarf or a hat. There is a KZread sermon on the symbolism of the veil by Father Rippenger. The fact that modern Western women see this as being symbolic of women's oppression means that there is an intuitive understanding that women who cover their head while attending Mass speaks of something that goes beyond it being just a fashion accessory.

Hi Josh, That pattern of covering/not covering is prescribed by Paul in 1 Corinthians 11: men must not cover because man is the glory of God, women must cover because woman is the glory of man, and her hair is her glory.

while watching I was thinking of the Game of Thrones Dothraki example of the symbolism of hair in the dualistic sense, where strength is represented by undefeated warrior with long hair yet to be cut, and weakness once defeated and hair cut.

What about a "The Symbolism of Feet" video?

Hey Jonathan, I've been catching up with your videos and like you said, you've mentioned the garments of skin hundreds of times. This made me want to revisit Jordan Peterson's lecture on Joseph and the coat of many colors. When Joseph's brothers take his coat and slaughter a goat to cover the goat in blood, Jordan says that the red color of blood is a necessary color to add to our coats (/garments of skin). That to me is also symbolic of the relationship between death and glory. The red color of blood is necessary for the coat of glory, and the coat of glory transcends death. One other interesting thing is that according to the wikipedia page on Joseph's coat, some translations render the coat as a "long robe with sleeves". You mentioned Revelation 1:14 where Jesus's head and hair are white as wool, and Revelation 1:13 also says He wore a long robe. That to me sounds like Joseph's coat, except that instead of the long robe having many colors, it would have *all* colors like His hair. Joseph adding more colors to his coat/hair represents him following The Way, and the ultimate fulfillment is the First and the Last with hair white as wool, hair with *all* colors.

Joseph's garment is a long-hemmed garment, not one of many colors. Long-hemmed indicates that he is getting a large inheritance (thus the jealousy from his brothers). The "many colors" translation is one of those persistent mistakes in English translations because of its popularity and impact on culture. A few other cases of persistent but popular mistranslations exist elsewhere. E.g. Elijah hearing "a still small voice" should be "loud, crushing sound" or something similar based on comparative Semitics and contextual considerations, i.e. Elijah is experiencing a divine theophany on a mountain, cf. Moses on Sinai w/thunder, etc. Peterson has a lot of interesting things to say, including about the Bible, but he is sometimes way out of his league when it comes to interpreting the Bible. Best short book on Revelation is probably Richard Bauckham's The Theology of the Book of Revelation.

@@emmawyman8973 it's not a "mistake" only in English translations. There are Spanish, French, even Russian translations that make the same "mistake", and those are all very different cultures. Some translations even call it an ornate coat. The original Hebrew has uncertain translations, as I think it should have because of the multiple layers of meaning associated with garments (of skin). I think both "long robe" and "coat of many colors" draw parallels between Joseph and Jesus as He appears in Revelation 1. I think calling it a "coat of many colors" really does reveal another layer of symbolism in Joseph's brothers dipping his coat in blood. You need all the colors to make white, including (even especially) red.

How does 1 Cor. 11:14, concerning Paul's admonishment of men having long hair, play into this?

What does this have to say about Super Saiyans I wonder.....

Pretty straightforward: it's an expression of spiritual power and of pushing the limits, thinning the boundary between life and death. White hair = death and glory. Not being white in this case but just lighter emphasizes the glory and de-emphasizes death.

Do you have any preferences or recommendations in regards of what Bible to read? I've looked over your reading list but I don't think you mention any version in particular. I would like to know the Orthodox view of the matter.

Hi Jonathan. You talked about the symbolism of Hair in Christianity. I wonder how the pagans viewed this topic, it seems that they had similar interpretations for the Merovingians (the long haired kings) believed their hair gave them strength or legitimacy.

I also think hair in general and hair in the Bible is significant but for somewhat different reasons. Firstly, I neither see hairs as being dead nor 'not part of us'. Hair contains our DNA and it also has roots within us and continually grows so it is neither dead nor apart from us. Interestingly, hairs is actually skin. Biologically it is classed as skin in a different from just as our finger and toe nails are skin. The most significant practical and also symbolic thing about hair is that every follicle of hair is an appendage; a branch if you will. God created Adam and Eve to be his children, a branch of his lineage that were to have offspring who were to have more offspring and branch out to billions and trillions of children of God all networked together as brothers and sisters and converging through their ancestors all the way back to God directly the way branches of a tree converge all the way to the truck and the roots. The reason fallen mankind need to 'engraft' to Jesus is that Adam and Even un-engrafted from God at the fall and engrafted themselves to Satan. This is why both John the Baptist and Jesus referred to people as a 'brood of vipers'. Just just as trees are a major symbol in the Bible with the highest form being Jesus himself as the Tree of Life, so appendages and branching is referenced and significant all through the Bible. For example, one reason Satan is represented as a serpent is that a serpent has no appendages/limbs (as well as because they are cold blooded and poison their prey's blood prior to consuming them). In the same way, hair represents a myriad of appendages and perhaps this is why Samson's strength was in his long hair in that it represented a strong, prosperous lineage of God. And just as Adam and Eve entangled themselves with a false tree in Lucifer, so Absalom's downfall and death was in that all the hair appendages from his head became hopelessly entangled within the branches of a tree.

I think there’s a misunderstanding here. By the Eastern Orthodox, it is recognized there is no repentance after death; the only “chance” we have is now, and so it will only be until death arrives.

This also explains why all hair is cut off during basic training in the military.

Long hair when translated to masculinity is a direct sign that the Man is untamed, unbroken, wild (in the good sense) in his pure natural element. The practical purpose of hair is to keep the head warm and natural camo.
