Ok, so first of all, the “low pen” APDS has better pen at angles, second thing is that this vehicle is currently the only one that is able to survive with **1 crew member**, third and last thing is that there are 3 other variants, Strv 103 A, B, C, D and Strv 103 C Deminer (unarmed).

But if you dig deeper it does make sense... Sweden tends to be valleys and mountains... tanks don't do all that well on mountains so they will be in the valleys, if you have a few 103's waiting deeper in the valley then a turret becomes kinda redundant, the natural killzone of the valley funnels targets to you. A turret and all its complexity for the autoloader is wasted then.

@@darkhowling6425 actually, most of the S-tanks were deployed in Scania, a part of the country conquered from Denmark in the late 18th century that used to be sea floor until after the last ice age, and is mostly gently rolling plains covered in grain fields with only three significant ridges running from south east to north west and some minor patches of beech forest. It's role was that of an MBT, as it's short ground contact surface and wide tracks, low weight and high power to weight ratio and torque provided by it's General Electric gas turbine and supplemented by the piston engine and Driver/gunner + Commander cupola and H-K override controls allows it to crash stop and turn to fire accurately with a kill shot at unexpected side threats faster than a contemporary turreted tank lile the Centurion, Patton, T-55, Leopard 1 or AMX could stop and stabilise enough to fire a second accurate shot as that generation of MBTs firing on the move with traversed turret just couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

For people interested in how the tank works look up the Chieftain's Hatch for this vehicle, it's pretty neat.

Sweden could end up with 5 of these things running around per lineup After that the tanks were pulled out of service and replaced with a home built version of the leo 2a5.

this tank was deisgned to defend sweden from incoming threat. the idea was that since sweden has a lot of hills they could use that to their advantage. they came up with this, and it was supposed to pop up behind a hill, fire and then reverse before the enemy even had seen them since the low profile made it really hard to locate. it would then pop up behind a different hill fire, reverse and the enemy never knew where it is or where it would appear next. it is a genious piece of engineering and it makes me proud since it was made to protect my own country, together with the strongest air force in the world. i’m not kidding.

Phlydaily, you were wondering about variations: Well yes as far as it may go in war thunder we are likely to go up to the STRV 103 B variant, just an upgraded more modern version, there are also older versions and we may see the UDES 03 as a predecessor which DOES have independent gun elevation as well as the variable suspension I suggest you look at images of the UDES

Phly we had up to Strv 103C, which had HEAT shields at the front of the tank. They could also float on water and drive. The S-tanks had autoloaders and thats why the gun is fixed in the hull to give a reliable autoloading system

What I love about this tank is that it can literally lift every tank in the game and shoot their lower plate killing them :P

the S-tank is loaded via an autoloader, rounds are fed in from low on the rear of the hull before the battle. its one of the reasons the gun is fixed in place. fun fact, this is one of the few tanks ever made that is fully combat-capable with only 1 person crewing her

Yes there are multible versions of this tank design, the coolest imo is the strv 103b which has a heat fence at the front of the wedge looks so badass. + it has 50mm frontal amor and a bulldozer!

16:10 the one in game is the prototype, there are 3 actual production variants: A, B and C. the A model is effectively the same as the prototype only with some minor changes. the B model got an engine upgrade, the ability to mount a bulldozer blade and almost definitely some more minor changes. the C model got a slew of modernization upgrades including: the bulldozer blade being mounted on every tank instead of every third tank, gas can "ERA" on the side, new engine, upgrades to the transmission, improved fire control system, i belive a laser rangefinder, more minor and semi-minor changes.

The Strv-103, aka the S-tank was a one-off tank (though really it was a tankdestroyer) and deployed in limited numbers. It was phased out gradually as the Leopard entered service.The reason for the fixed gun and peculiar hydraulics is because it's basicly saying "So the oscillating turret was flawed, but what if we turn the entire tank into a turret". Ie, it had a massive autoloader with a fire rate of 30 rounds per minute. To feed that cannon it had two fully automatic magazines with a total of 50 rounds (25 anti-tank, 20 HE and 5 tactical rounds like smoke and illumination). With the entire tank being a turret and the tank supposed to fight defensively (using terrain, low profile and it's massive -11 degree depression angle to ambush enemies, and then getting out of dodge with its high reverse speed. The radiooperator had his own rear-facing steeringwheel to make reversing as easy as possible) the decision was made to maximize forward protection by giving it an extreme armor angle and putting as much metal (engines etc) as possible between the front and the crew.

1972 the strv 103 got the protecting fence(Tillsatsutrustning 2930) but after tests it emerged it had little effect due to a hit ripped up large amounts of armor fragments that damage the sights of the driver and commander

Yeah, I play wot, and have the STRV 103B, it is pretty neat

I notice that the models upper plate (the engine cover doors) are missing the horizontal, thick metal ribs that also contributes to give the armour extra strength and increase chance of bouncing incoming rounds.

There's plenty more of these, 0-Serie means it's only the prototype! The strv 103 got an even more powerful gas turbine, thicker armour and better gun angles with later variants, including composite armour on the 103D prototype!

Was looking forward to this tank! I really enjoy it in WOT and couldn't wait for it to be part of warthunder

yes there are several variants The one in game is the before production variant. There was the strv 103A strv 103B strv 103C strv 103D strv 103C Deminer

On the same chassie Sweden built a selfpropelled 155 mm Howitzer Bandkanonvagn. It had fullly automated loading and were loaded with clips of grenades from an ammunition lorry. Required a very small crew compared to the US Paladin.

Something about the STRV 103: all three people have a set of driving controls and the commander also has a set of firing controls, not just the gunner. Technically this tank is fully operational with only one person alive.

Hey Phly. I just wanted to say that I'm really happy you made a video on this tank again. A little fun fact(s) about this tank is that the Swedish only made 3 of these tanks in the testing of it being effective or not. One of these resides in VA at the Tank Farm (full functioning I may add) and I have personally been able to see it operate and get inside of it to see what it's like. For this tank, the way they designed it was ahead of it's time but also a major set back for it. The way the armor is angled and with how thin it is allowed it to be a lighter weight, but still extremely effective vehicle at multiple ranges while still allowing it to sport a high caliber gun capable of taking on heavier and stronger vehicles. The biggest downfall of it that you did touch on was the fact that it did have a completely fixed gun to the hull meaning that any aiming needing to be done had to be done while steering making stability a big issue also

iirc Sergey said on the devstream that the hull aiming mode was still WIP as they weren't quite satisfied with it yet

We didn't just call it that, we used it as an MBT too. Don't believe the myths about this being a "defensive tank", this thing was used in the exact way tanks with turrets were used in Sweden.

Yes, the swedish continued the Strv103 tank series with the A series (with a less powerful engine then the B series - then upgraded), the B series (as said before it had a better turbine engine than the first production models) and the C series with IIRC little improvements like the anti heat grill and the dozer blade to dig itself into the ground to hide the lower plate.

The strv 103 was the first mass-produced main battle tank to use a turbine engine and there were four variations. It was used from 1967-1997 and was considered a tank under Swedish doctrine rather than a tank destroyer due to its designated combat role. The tank was also designed for it to be possible for one man to operate the entire tank, as every position had gun controls and driving controls.

As for variety of this tank design, taken from World of Tanks where this tech tree is in for few years now, there are 4 types, UDES 03, Strv S1, Strv 103-0 and Strv 103B.

There is even a version of the tank (Strv 103D) from the 90s that had a whole lot of extra Appliqué armour that increased its protection to even survive modern shells for the time.

there is 5 versions of this tank (including the one you showed), the stridsvagn 103 A, B and C alongside a proposal to upgrade the tank which would have been the D version.

There are also medium tanks with same type style witha turret the turret is also sloped just like the strvs hull and u can also get more gun depresion with the suspension setup

But they had to take out the MAUS because they "couldnt balance" it... Sure just give this thing 7.3

Bring Jagdtiger down to 6.7 and keep the other heavy TDs at 7.0+. Move T32 to 7.7. I'm not so sure Gaijin really have balance in mind.

GrayMate I don’t know if it’s gonna be considered a paper vehicle, but the D model was a C with reactive and appliqué armor. Never produced though, we bought Leos instead because Leos:)

there is so much more to this tank than the first '0' variant, wich is the pre-production one. they made 4 more after that. and they had some pretty good protection. it had a dozerblade mounted that could fold out and retract so it could bury itself into a hull down position. it also had extra fuel cans as a skirt. not to mention the fence on the front to stop such rounds as APFSDS. that's just some of the small nifty things made for it. it could also move just as fast backwards as forwards, and that is why one crewmember is in the backwards position. it could also operate with just ONE crewmember. and some several other stuff that wount acctually make any difference in the game.

This tank is played as a bush long ranged sniper that can move to new sniper positions then and then, you should take advance of hills when lowering the suspension. Also it loves holes in map where you only show the gun. We had this tanked active till 90s, today we have leopard 2AV but a swedish version of it.

In World of Tanks it’s called the S-Tank. An auto-loading tank developed post-WW2 and was meant use ridges of Sweden as a defense vehicle hence the wedge. They wanted as low of a profile as possible if the Russians ever had tried to invade the country.

"Tank Destroyer" It's a MBT... but whatever, Gaijin. Edit: Damn, Swedes sure knew how to make a hella survivable tank. 1+ for them.

The play is hopefully close the distance or get the crew roof when it's stanced then you either kill it's engine and flank or just kill it via crew roof. Would like for the aiming mode to not stop your tank completely but allow you a small amount of movement back and forth so you can almost get into position and be ready immediately

Just think this is without the dozer blade that the tank comes with. It was designed to make it's own hull down positions on the phly. Stridsvagn 103B hydro-pneumatic suspension increased elevation range from -10 through +12 degrees, to -11 through +16 degrees. 103C fitted with a dozer blade additional fuel cans placed along the sides to function as applique armour, and added a new laser rangefinder. 103D installation of fire-control computer, thermal viewers for both the gunner and the commander, passive IR for the driver. They then went to the STRV 122 based on the German Leopard 2 Improved variant, just like the German Leopard 2A5 with a few changes.

Gotta love how the S-tank, one of Sweden's most well known and most produced tanks, their MBT of the cold war, is a premium. That would be like making all leopard 1s premium.

Sweden made a prototype of this, the Strv S1, as well as those that went into production, Strv 103A, B and C. It also made a prototype similar to this called the UDES 03

That tank is like made for Finland and hilly areas, so you can drive up a hill and lift the behind so can peek over the hill with a very low silhouette, it may be hard to aim, but you can go up to some of your favorite spots and be like a hillside troll there. It will be fun to see you use it in a real battle when it come to the game.
