The Swedish Ship Götheborg Making linseed oil putty

We traditionally use pitch to seal the seams we've caulked on the ship. However, there is one exception where we don't use pitch to seal the seams, but instead use linseed oil putty. And that's in the hull of the ship.
Pitch is our top choice when compared to linseed oil putty, due to it's durability and waterproofness. So, the reason why we use linseed oil putty on the hull is purely aesthetic. If we use pitch, it will be difficult to paint it without black stripes being visible and that is something we don't want.
In this video you can see how we make our own linseed oil putty.

would you not add boiled linseed oil too to help with drying even double boiled linseed oil or would this effect its long term performance I know adding whitting to ready mixed putty to take away the stickiness doesn't to any good

Raw linseed oil, that doesn't harden so quick.

what happens if you use varnish instead of raw? and what happens if you put first oil and then chalk in the bowl for mixing?

Well, the putty should stay flexible for as long as possible so don't use varnish.

What does the "overnight rest" do? Why not just add all the chalk powder in the beginning?

Nice look at Ron‘s kitchen. You can also make tarputty by mixing it with tar instead of linseed oil.

Maybe use wax paper instead of plastic bags for non stick? Or first wax paper then plastic bag. Just a guess.

That's what we usually did and still are doing. It's good to test the making processes when possible. This gives insight in the products that we are using. In the past we have made our own linseed oil paint, was also very insightfull.
