    The other part of the magic is that he knows about KZread and the algorithm. By making a riddle in a video that we have to go back to figure out over and over again, it makes the KZread algorithm promote this video even more because we're spending more time on it. Then he gets a highlighted comment and sends even more people to his page.

That's why being keen is a compliment 😉 (and why slyness is an cloak of invisibility and a weapon of misdirection, CareFULL kiddo's these tools will cut in both directions when used.) He misdirects on the first solution. He quite clearly says "Using nothing except for these items - a candle, some pushpins and some matches". This rule explicitly excludes the box. He would need to say "a box of pushpins" to allow the box. So when he says you can use to box to find the solution that is "in plain sight", he is violating the very rules he specified. This itself may be a total misdirection to "prove his point", and expects us to fall for it, which most of us do (and yes, I did till thinking about it further) . . . unless he simple forgot to say a "box of pushpins", but in this case he did, so his solution is invalid for the rules given. Note that the original Karl Duncker test did in fact include the box.

    @@deanfalzon7973 I'm not saying that the point is wrong, but that his example was not valid. He explicitly limits the "info" to specific items. Your solution is to ignore the problem he actually gives and generalize - in which case essentially you can bring in anything else you can think of, and there would be many many ways of solving this problem , and it no longer is a "thought experiment" really.

    For all of my life, I have been criticized and misjudged based on any of these three common ways of the thinking. I'm very creative. My ideas are often either noticed and positively embraced or ridiculed. However, if people were to suspend these three limits, then they would be able to see the creativity in problem-solving and improve the situation more efficiently and effectively. Suspend quick judgments. Consider creative alternatives to answer the challenges at-hand. 1. Misconceptions. Reassess the details to bring the information to surface in order to improve cognitive thinking. 2. Assumptions Don't assume there are only certain resolutions. 3. Expectations The answer you expect to find can limit your thinking.

While helping my 5 year old build, I saw that he doesn't see them the way I do. So I started to challenge myself. After just a year, I find myself looking at other things differently now too. My instant response to the saltshaker conundrum was to move the glasses closer together and balance the saltshaker between their rims, lay the dollar bill on top of the rims so the saltshaker is balancing "on" the bill. This is great for awareness that our brains are wired such that we default to certain assumptions or more complicated ways of problem solving. The "school bus direction" problem is a pristine example of how adults complicate things whereas children aren't as biased. Again, great talk and information that proves the point. Question is: What tools exist that we can utilize that help us overcome this? Most viewers will leave this video never to research and benefit from the powerful outcomes that we witnessed...knowing that it can be transformative in our lives. We just toss away a potentially radical new way of thinking that may lead us to our own greatness...so to speak.

    To be fair, it would've been more honest to say something like "a box of push-pins." When you only mention the pins per se, it conveys the notion that only the pins are in the list of items to be used. Then it's not really a matter of cognitive bias; we just weren't given the box to use.

  • @jsf96

    @jsf96

    That's the point he was trying to make, just because he didn't mention the box doesn't mean you can't use it. Our brains automatically were drawn to finding a solution using only what we were told, it's a sheep mentality that we have to break. I even fell for it too, for the exact reason you're commenting about. It doesn't mean you aren't smart, it's just something that needs to be worked on and refined, he's providing a way to help others improve themselves, that's all.

    In the actual experiment they just say use these items and you can clearly see that those are all provided but the same concept still exists and many people don’t use it bexuase they aren’t specifically instructed. The point is to not be instructed to do it and to think creatively

  • @lucasgroves137

    @@nikkirodman1302 I think it's a weak concept because it relies on a semantic trick. A person who reasonably thinks that they are supposed to find a solution using the pins alone is not failing in creativity; they are simply listening to the instructions in good faith.

    The dude in the video is literally teaching us to "think outside the box"... *Pun intended* It's the same thing as "work smarter, not harder". Life isn't easy, but it gets easier when you are able to navigate throughout it in a different way with the thought process this dude is showing us. It's not new, it just works.
