Paul whitehouse's character deserves to be up there with the best, if this was a full series and not just a sketch it would be recognised as one of the greatest comedy characters in british history

I was very very drunk.

As an Operating Department Practitioner of 35 years, I get 100% of all the 'in' gags. This pair have really done their research and rarely, if ever get stuff wrong. Absolute comedy genius.

I agree.... Paul is marvelous...but Harry is the perfect foil.... Precision comedy..... They complement each other in many sketches/characters.... None better...... Nor shall they will be in say, what you, 40, 45 years...Mmm?

Sheridan is the more inquisitive and extroverted of the pair. Charles is more reserved but extremely perceptive and sharp. What a fantastic pair of characters. They seem like genuine colleagues and capable professionals.

This is the funniest thing in the last 40, 45 years

How are your stools?

My first job in the 80s was working in a shop owned by a character just like this, with the brylcreemed hair and everything. I once came in on a summers day with my jumper tied round my waist and he said my attire was 'rather more becoming of the chaps on the terraces at Stamford Bridge than someone facing the public'. Paul Whitehouse is a genius character actor but I do love how Harry plays Charles in this too. We just arent making comedy this brilliant anymore

Luckily if you are able to broaden your tastes enough you'll always be able to find something new. This is my first time watching Harry and Paul! @@protahgonist 'over the hill's you cheeky sod! I must get down with the kids and start watching fishing :) (to be fair is a sweet show. True, there is always good stuff out there if you look for it. 'Back to Life' on the BBC and 'This way up' on Channel 4 being recent examples. I meant I dont see the depth of writing, acting, range and just sheer class out there that Harry and Paul have. Funny is funny but find alot of stuff a bit one dimensional and lacking in depth, apart from Partridge (which has gone of the boil in recent years). But what do I know? Opinions are like arseholes, we've all got one.

Paul's range is fantastic. He's believable as a member of all regions and classes

My God, how sharply observed and recreated/acted by the pair..a simply spot on sketch/es of our educated and skilled surgeons characters and foibles, delicious.

These two surgeons have resuscitated British comedy.

Its basically a one joke sketch. But..in the hands of two geniuses, it reaches a height of excellence, few could reach.

One of the cleverest sketches ever. The acting was unbelievable.

Sheridan is quite possibly Paul Whitehouses greatest character

Definitely his best character, very well observed - I think he was better in the earlier episodes though, when he had a more high pitched voice and a faster way of speaking. He seems to have got less 'Sheridan' in the later series, but still comedy gold :)

He is! Enfield is just Enfield in everything, but Whitehouse completely transforms into this hilarious character - brilliant attention to detail :)

I am never going to be able to say 40 or 45 again without dying laughing. Brilliant. I've watched this maybe 40/45 times!

I have known men exactly like these. A couple of, surgeons, a QC and thes vice chancellor at a university. Superbly observed.

@@thesceptic1018 Sadly, no! I suffered a rather nasty compound fracture of my left tibia. As it happens, I did get a wound infection a couple of months later.

This is the horror of our meritocratic world: there are indeed existing posh, highly educated, well-connected but super clever, super competent and, horror of horrors, ethical and really, really nice people. I once met a surgeon in the USA who had a phd in engineering, had been a fast jet pilot in the Air Force and who also managed a large hospital extremely well in his spare time. He had five children, had been happily married for “40, 45 years” to an ex-beauty queen, and an exceptionally nice person. I realised then that nature does sometimes gives out all the prizes.

I'd love to be one of these men. Highly intelligent and experienced, just breezing through middle-aged life, doing whatever they like with loadsa money while saving lives.

Just fantastic to watch. Sheridan is an incredible character. So brilliantly brought to life. You forget it’s Paul Whitehouse. Wish he took this character forward into longer appearances. This and Rowley Birkin QC are the best comedic characters ever created. Fantastic stuff

My Wife was a Matron of the local ICU and assured me these characters really do exist ..one in particular listened to Beethoven’s Marche de Funebre whilst Operating ( it turned out the patient was a Funeral Director whom the Surgeon knew !)

when i was 14 i had a ingrown toenail operation, which i was awake during. It was a proper surgical environment, me, the doctor, 3 nurses, while he played Steve Winwood, Higher Love

Chopin old boy. It’s important to be accurate.

While there are laugh out loud moments, it's the subtle ones that you think about later and realise "aah that's clever" that are the gems.

I wish they'd made a film version of this, I love these two.

Excellent! Not like that any more though. These were the lot who were at the very beginning of the NHS, all retired mid to late 90's. Never seen it before, so many thanks to Chris.

I truly LOVE these characters. I

Big noses & big ears, such an immaculate script.

Their 'minds are racing' how on earth do Charles & Sheridan, I mean Harry & Paul remember their complex & rapid fire dialogue, they're so professional at this skit. I suppose its rehearsal & repetition gets it sounding just right, for that camera take. Good on ya chaps.

14:37 Wonderful when Sheridan cuts right to the case with J K Rowling. No small talk. Just how are your stools?😂 Evidently he's not too interested in her literary works. As for the BoE governor, the "not surprised" reaction was played so well, pointing his finger. Just fantastic.

Just spot on for every pompous surgeon who's had their hands up my jacksie.

In the last scene the blonde in the background couldnt help laughing.I dont blame her. This comedy is priceless.

These two chaps remind me of my grandfather… he was a paediatric cardiologist, and surgeon… 😊

Me and my dad still laugh at this sketch. As good as Harry is, Paul Whitehouse is an untapped resource. Such an underrated comedian.

I like how Harry doesn't try to hard to compete, and lets Sheridan's Character rise.

Sheridan is like Rowley Birkin (QC) inhabiting Bill Nighy, marvellous creation

By the time it came to the 'Brush up on your mandarin' section, my sides fell apart completely. Legendary duo.

I had my appendics out in 2000 and I had a Navy surgeon. He was just like these two and he did a wonderful job

Although Charles says he does National Health work - I would imagine it would be really difficult to get on one of his lists. Not sure that going private would do it either - probably it’s who you know .

My grandfather died the same age as Bunny. Still such a young man. Only 85. Goodness me that must've been what, 40-45 years ago now...

Having worked in Theatres at the _Portland Hospital for Women & Children,_ I can confirm this is absolutely *spot on.* Bravo, especially Paul Whitehouse.

There's quite a few comments that Sheridan reminds people of 70's orthopaedic surgeons (interesting that it's ortho,) but he reminds me of monocle wearing astronomers.

Presumably because a considerable proportion of young people will see an orthopaedic surgeon (and no other speciality). Though the swagger of Charles and Sheridan is more in line with cardiothoracic surgeons if you ask me.

Paul Whitehouse is a fucking genius.

My grandfather was a consultant surgeon in NHS & private practise and he spoke like these two. So for me, what's funny is the fact they banter right through the op.; my mother says their speech wasn't considered too posh for drs & surgeons 40 years ago.

I used to work with surgeons. This is remarkably lifelike for the older ones.

Believe me...this is SO accurate it’s bordering on a documentary!

Well done Paul, it is Mum not ma’am to her Maj. I just love these two clever, funny guys Harry and Paul.

“One can always find time for one’s national health work Sheridan” A clever insertion there by the writer and an insight into the frankly outrageous cushy contracts the great British public are still content to put up with at the expense of waiting lists. Pass me the speculum Sheridan.

They still do their NHS work as a “matter of principle”. I.e. they’re doing all the stuff listed ON TOP of NHS work. I read that as “we’re fortunate enough that these brilliant bods could abandon the NHS and make shedloads of money but insist on doing NHS work on principle because they care about what’s good for patients.” What they do on their own time is up to them. More importantly: most consultant doctors do no private work at all, and NHS consultant pay has fallen by a third in real terms since 2005. That’s ignoring the loss of final salary pensions and the current issue with the pension tax allowance taper. There’s nothing cushy about being a consultant these days, and anyone who says so clearly hasn’t a clue what the job actually entails.

One of my favourite characters... and there are hundreds that are really great.

Impossibly brilliant surgeons.

Their depictions in 'The Surgeons' are SUPERB!!

I think these surgeon sketches are my favourite creation from Harry and Paul, nicely written and delivered. I so wish they could have fleshed it out into something more.

I just realised something. When the two old gentlemen from another set of characters are discussing whether a well known figure in the newspaper is a queer or not, they usually ask the opinion of the man in the background named Bunny. These surgeons were discussing the death of a certain Mr. Armstrong Miller whose first name happens to be Bunny. I wonder is it the same gentleman? 🤔

Harry and Paul is such an under rated show. To me, it's better than their earlier shows and is pin sharp satire! Edit: When I say 'under-rated', I do realise that the show was on prime time TV, and reasonsbly popular, but it doesn't seem to be *anywhere* near as popular as any of their previous shows (e.g. The Fast Show, Harry Enfield's T.V. Programme). I think this is the best material they have done and the characters and satire are spot on. The old Dr's are great personas amongst an array of great personas.

Both are superb, but Paul Whitehouse is incredible 😂😂

I don't know how many times I watched these clips but every time I see more and more to laugh at. Absolute exponents of character comedy which only Paul and Harry could pull off. Situation comedy at it's very best.

Actually one doesn't always find time for one's NHS work - Test Matches , Henley , Cowes , 6 Nations , The Open, Wimbledon etc often make demands on one's NHS time.
