Harry and Paul's Story of the Twos - 26/05/2014
Комедия
26/05/2014
As part of the 50th anniversary of BBC Two, the channel has commissioned Harry and Paul to celebrate the occasion in their own unique way, and this they are doing - both ruthlessly and Reithlessly. Inspired by Harry Enfield's Emmy Award-winning mythical biography, Norbert Smith, and Harry and Paul Whitehouse's Question Time spoof, the BBC's head of comedy Shane Allen asked them to come up with their own unique biography of BBC Two. In this one-off comedy-drama, Harry and Paul, themselves popular fixtures of the channel for half the 50 years, dance through the story of BBC Two. They start with its painful birth, as 'Auntie Beeb' pushes out the now familiar logo into the arms of the attending BBC execs. This sets the tone as the shows romp through the story of Two's highs and lows, from World War One to imported Scandinavian dramas, via The Forsyte Saga, Tim Nice But Brooke Taylor, Late Night Line Up with Joan Bakewell Tart and Monty Python. It drops into The Office and Boys from the Blackstuff, Arena, Old Grey Whistle Test and The Apprentice among many others.
The whole journey is set inside a Simon Schama documentary, with Simon, played by Harry, laconically walking through and linking this 50-year saga. Shot in the studio and on location, the show visits and parodies in the region of 50 different shows, and there are 150 of BBC Two's favourite presenters, actors, comics and politicians on parade, most of them portrayed by either Harry or Paul with a little help from their friends.

This is an overlooked masterpiece. I’ve watched it a million times and always find something new. Possibly the best piece of work Harry & Paul have done 🙌🏽

I'm watching this drunk and alone right now! 🍷
Possibly the greatest series of throwaway gags ever assembled. The attention to detail is phenominal. Huzzah!
There's some top class impressions going on here, especially Cleese!

Listened to a very long Cleese interview on a road trip yesterday. I looked away briefly while watching this and nearly snapped my neck, I looked back so fast! The voice fooled me completely.
Harry Enfeild undoubtedly, the most significant historical political satirist, next to none. Thank you, Mr. Enfield, Paul Waterhouse & chum's you make life more enjoyable.
The panel show part was absolutely true. Every bit.
The Rowan Atkinson impression was incredible.
The Simon Schama impersonation is more like the man than the man himself! Spot on in every scene. Brilliant.

I was about to write that in a comment 😄 Brilliant, cheers!
The Scandinavian drama bit was pure unadulterated genius. I nearly pooped myself laughing. I grew up with Pingu, I guess I will never see him the same again! xD
Love the fact the two of them had free range of the old BBC Television centre like a couple of kids in an empty school in half term! Brilliant!
"I mean the arrogance of these people!" :D Genius!

Best John Cleese impression ever!
I missed this when it was broadcast. The Northern Irish veteran commenting on the Christmas day football match during the Great War is hilarious

"You horrid little homosexual" This is one of those shows that's wonderful and super at the same time! ✌❤ from Canada
Harry Enfield one of my comedy heroes. He's one of those people that even if he was trying to be serious and reading the 10oclock news you'd still laugh. Genius.
Never really felt like i got Harry and Paul until this, but this was glorious

@@stuartwilkie4887 I think they have both aged....like a fine wine.... They complement each other perfectly. Their "surgeons" just crack me up..... "One always has time for ones NHS work...." "Time for a brandy?" "It's a little early, I think" .(..30 seconds later): "Yes, I think so." The 40....40...45? years? Was it? Routine....That was brilliant...wasn't it.....about 40, 45 years ago...was it?
This is by far the most brilliant mockumentary ever made! Absolute genious from beginning to end.

Harry Enfield doing John Cleese is amazing
Only discovered this 2 weeks ago and I've watched it 5 times , pure comedy gold
Enfield's Schama is spot-on--the mannerisms are just perfect.
Phenomenal piece of work. A lot of quite obscure references and in-jokes which I loved. Paul Whitehouse's Alex Higgins was remarkable.
Paul Whitehouse is one of the best comic performers ever. Not a top comedian but a top notch comedic actor. TLOG guys are up there too
Absolutely brilliant. How have I never seen this before???
"Its the 1970's and time for new channel to get serious....dramatically serious...about drama!!!" LOVE IT!!!
Simply brilliant. Any one that aspires to be a comedian should watch and take on-board. My god, where has stuff like this gone?
The Scandinavian crime thriller spoof is sheer genius. :D
45:54 The "better than you" sequence. So accurate. That is what reality tv is all about.

Probably the best piece of 'Television' ever.
Spot on Harry Enfield. Stuff that needed to be said.
Lol! They really nailed Ian Hislops smug face and mannerisms!
Harry Enfield as Alan Bennett is brilliant!
Miserabel is absolutely spot on parody of Scandinavian police dramas hahaha
Very very funny. My two favourite lines: 'This is the BBC. Aren't we all communists?' and 'Do you like my moptop? I trust I am the only man in the 1890s who has one'. The Forsyte Saga parody was such an accurate portrayal of sixties TV drama!
"I had absolutely no idea what was going on at the time.... but it was bloody marvellous"
I honestly use this as an introduction to the BBC Television service when I'm trying to teach my fellow American friends about the oddities of British telivision. They see the parodies, and want to know what they're based on. Quite effective. "Eh, Terry... wash your mouth out with carbolic, why don't 'ya?" Classic.
These guys are the funniest duo Ive ever come across. I cant even decide who I like more. just perfectly matched! Their impersonations are second to none.
I'm American and my face hurts from laughing. I've seen enough BBC to get most of it. BBC programming still better than US programming. Harry and Paul make me cry from laughing. They are national treasures. I'm going to recover for a few minutes and watch again.... Also, when I saw the Bronowski parody, I remembered how much I enjoyed the Ascent of Man. I watched that on KZread. It holds up well.
An astonishing hour of TV.
The panel show segment is so surreal, it feels like something I'd see in a dream
It's been eight years already?! I honestly felt it was just a year or two ago since this came out. I keep coming back to it every now and then because I loved this so much. I wished more people knew about this. I am not from the continent nor know many of the references, but by golly I enjoy this immensely. Each time I check back I can't help but re-watch the whole thing again from start to finish.
Harry Enfield does an excellent Simon Schama
Never seen any of this before, and it's a great surprise! The impersonations are wonderfully accurate, and I must say that Pingu is my favourite character for 2022, if he's out of jail yet.
Brilliant! Harry and Paul at their best.
lol, the Forsyth saga , the cast would sometimes read the script from an autocue or strategically placed notes and the budget meant they sometimes could only use one camera.........They get this spot on in this sketch...wonderful.
Thank for uploading this, love it
This might be the best hour of comedy I've ever seen...Just wonderful. And so almost infuriatingly fertile. Just joke after joke until I was doubled over at my desk. Stupendous.
they got simon schama played perfectly lol
looks around in pain "is this going to be a very long sketch?" "Oh yes!"
"Gissa job, eh? eh?" "Are you from Oxford or Camb..."
Stunningly brilliant. Yes, it's very 'in' and quite 'unfunny' and difficult to watch in places but that's deliberately part of the programme's message. Best thing I have ever seen from Harry and Paul. Bravo!
Just brilliant! Very clever script, tongue in cheek and knowing, fine acting: impressionistic rather than just impressions. A wonderful gallop through a much loved (and loathed?) channel, but much more - a satirical observation, albeit a narrow one, of the nation we were and what we have become. I salute the effort as much as the result!
I loved the Panel Show bit at the end!
That was totally wonderful and totally super.
‘One Clavdivs’ 😂
I have watched it several times - "Simon Schama" is about perfect. Well Done.
Still laughing at the Pingu drama...absolutely brilliant.
I love this! As an American I just wish I knew more about a few of the things they are satirizing.
That was absolute Gold.... it's hard to describe the joy that gave me. Gold🌴
"I don't remember any of it. But I was there!" Great stuff. And whoever played Stephen Fry in Blackadder was perfect.
Im a brit living in holland in bloody isolation with covert..feel like ive been hit by a train, just found this!! BRILLIANT!!!!! Just what i needed this is the BEST satirical comedy genius masterpiece in Uk history!! I could watch this every day🤣
Formidable. They even do a passably good impression of themselves..!
I'm the only one who really appreciates the great war impressions. Loved that show and love this. Back when the BBC was worth the licence fee
This is phenomenal! I'm too young and not British anyways so there's lot of references/jokes that I don't get, but those that I do get are absolutely hilarious. Thanks a ton for uploading this!
63,000 people have viewed this 6 months later, 63 hundred billion have seen 'charlie bit my finger'.....what is wrong with people...this is pure genius!
This is just brilliant. 1 Clavdivs, Blackadder V, Panel Show, Men From The Mersey...
Those Barry Cryer bits are shockingly accurate!
One of the best programmes I've ever seen
I don't remember much about it.....but I was THERE! ;)
Fabulous documentary. I remember all the key personnel - Porky Peakcock sadly died just a few years ago in a nursing home in Chiswick.
I actually want to see a Blackadder series set at the time of King Edward the 8th now!
Harry Enfield as the Devonshire old soldier had me in absolute fits of laughter.
1 CLAVDIVS was the perfect moment. I laughed and laughed.
i saw that world war one documentary they parody here recently- it's on youtube- and it is really really good. it's the only documentary about ww1 i've ever seen where they actually interviewed people who were there, it's fascinating seeing actual first world war soldiers talking about what they did, filmed when there were still so many left alive
This is fantastic, beginning to end!
Comrade Jim Broadbentsavich, 😂pure genius
I missed this when it was on so thanks for posting. Joyfully silly yet satirical. Sending people up in a hilariously scathing fashion!
I want Harry and Paul to do a new series
Harry and Paul are brilliant! This is absolutely freat stuff. Regards from Norway.
Excellent send-up of nearly everyone.
The Swedish detective clip, so perceptive, brilliant
This is wonderful. Genius.
It is unusual that this video can't be watched in the UK or bought on dvd
A work of staggering genius.
How have I only just seen this. Extraordinary stuff.
Honestly...that was absolutely brillant!
Just.... Spot on!!
Utterly brilliant!❤
Absolutely brillant!
Brilliant. The panel show sketch nearly killed me, hilarious.
WELP!! I’ve done it again!!………by complete accident, I’ve stumbled upon more British comedy brilliance(pardon the redundancy) that I had no idea existed prior. 😂
This is quite brilliant
I'm telling to people all the time.. Harry is genius and Paul is as well. Making them two working together is one the BBC's, for me, most pleasant achievements! Jolly Good! P.S. I'm not the Tim Nice But Dim kind of man, but I do enjoy acting like one from time to time. Cheers!
I hope BBC Tutu arrives in my lifetime!
That is a superb Paul Jackson at 34:14
"Well let me tell you, sonny Jim boy with a lot of glue in your hair, you'll never be as good as me, because I'm better than you."
It's impossible to comprehend how good this one hour masterpiece is. If you were Harry and Paul (not withstanding their unheralded accomplices in the production) you would want to dine out on this for the rest of your life. The thought that went into every minute is so top drawer it's mind boggling. The nuance of the john Cleese "arrogance" scene is so sublime it's my personal favourite. I suppose this show did become the high water mark of their illustrious careers. Did they do anything as good after this as had gone before?
Absolutely fucking brilliant.... I wish we could have more Harry and Paul on the box... ONE CLAVDIVS made my eyes very very wet - classic.
"I'm gonna throw a brick at him" oh buzzcocks, we love you...
We need more🤣🤣🤣
I live in the US and these two have to be the funniest guys in the world.
